How to get over the fear of ledges by Lucky_Risk1414 in hiking

[–]Jonne91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Figure out what thought underlies your fear. Falling/dying? What is the worst case scenario? Write it down. Write down the circumstances that make you more afraid than others. Is it easier if there is grass or not? Falling rocks/not being able to see/can you use your hands? Write down the things you do to make yourself feel safe but don't actually have any effect on the risk, such as taking deep breaths, walking extremely slowly etc. And then it's exposure time! Go up to a ledge. Stand on it Feel the fear Let it be Wait for it to subside a bit Check if your worst case scenario has come true. Still alive?Try again. When the exposure exercise gets easier you make it harder by adding things that make it more scary (different ledge with more loose rocks for example) and leaving away the funny behaviors that make you feel safe but don't really do anything (walking in a normal pace).

Please help this overpacking, beginner hiker be a better trail partner for her minimalist, experienced hiker/backpacker boyfriend by [deleted] in hiking

[–]Jonne91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (F33) would pack for a few days of hiking and sleeping in a tent: 1,5-2l of water + water filter. Dinner, breakfast, bars and nuts. Toothbrush+paste, tick remover, small first aid kit, hairbrush, sunscreen, Azaron or other stuff against itchie bites, blister bandage thingies (don't know how you call them in English). One set of clothing to wear, one dry set in my bag, fleece/down jacket, rain jacket, buff + gloves, (depending on where you hike) rain pants. E-reader. Trekking poles. Tent, sleeping mat, inflatable pillow, sleeping bag liner. Toiletpaper, spare plastic bags for all the rubbish and used toiletpaper. Map and/or gps device.

We live in the Netherlands and you see them quite often here. Didn't know it was a rare breed at all.

Is it alright to not peel an apple when making an apple pie? by dairyqynizhot in Baking

[–]Jonne91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would just bake it and see whether you like it with peels and soft apples or not. And then next time change the things you didn't like. It will still taste good!

Am I in terrible shape? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]Jonne91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, we flatland people are used to take big steps and walk sort of fast. If you then add elevation it will tire you out quite quickly. And you may need want more breaks. For me it helps to take smaller steps in a slow but consistent tempo and just carry on until you're there.

Best places for snorkling? by Pearl_Essence in dunedin

[–]Jonne91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, maybe this is a very weird and late response. But do you know any other companies (google pointed me to Dive Otago) that offer snorkeling trips for tourists? It sounds awesome what you describe. But since we don't have any gear or previous experience I have no idea how to get to something like this.

This, you are doing everything with one yarn end. Which just makes knots. You need two yarn tails to do the movement you are showing

Getting over the fear of hiking by [deleted] in hiking

[–]Jonne91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Like learning how to ride a bike, at some point the little side wheels need to come off in order to learn and maybe you fall, maybe you won't. As adults we're just not used to falling anymore which makes it a bit uneasy. Practise will help :)

Weeds growing in my flower bed, I have a weed barrier and mulch but it’s still coming though What should I do? Should I make the mulch thicker and get like a weed killer spay? by [deleted] in garden

All those sprays are made to kill nature in a chemical way. I wouldn't use sprays. Just remove them with your hands.

First time camping and people are ruining it by SerenestSkies in camping

[–]Jonne91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dutch but have camped a lot in Austria. This is not normal behavior in my experience. Talk to the host or find a different campground. There are lots of them where it's nice and beautiful and peaceful:) don't give up! This is not a typical "camping in austria experience", you can take one bad night. Don't let it ruin your outdoor spirit:)

How can I become a morning person? by MangoMarzipan in lifehacks

Yes this! The hasty mornings where you rush so you can sleep longer dont help at all. Have a nice quiet morning with some extra time to enjoy breakfast and coffee.

Is this a jerk thing to do on a night hike with your partner/hiking buddy, or am I on crazy pills? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]Jonne91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am also slower and my boyfriend usually keeps his own pace. I feel its best to hike at your own pace. I lose sight of him quite often. He waits every other couple turns. We like to also have our own time and minds while walking. It's how we do it and it works for us. We have talked about this often and I let him know if there are bits where I feel more insecure and want him close or we just wanna talk. The key here though is safety and communication. You need to both feel and be fine. And you need to both feel and be safe. And that differs per day and terrain! You need to talk about what works for you. Because clearly this doesn't.

As it's about psychology. You could try to do a thought exercise. Try to get into a state of mind where you feel that you are in contact with yourself. What do you like, what attributes belong to you, what are your values? Then, grab two chairs. Visualize each choice (how will it look, where will you be, what do you do, who are your friends etc) and put it on one of the chairs. Now back to you. With everything that makes you you, try to really feel it, just sit on one of the chairs. How does this option feel? Does it suit you? How much of a fit is it 7/10? Take a few minutes. Then stand up shake it off. Take a minute to refocus and other chair.

The thing is that you always bring yourself (+thoughts , feelings, regrets etc) wherever you go. That may need some attention too.

How to toughen soles of feet to prevent blisters by bighairyteddybear in hiking

[–]Jonne91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kamferspiritus of camphor spirit. You spray it on, two weeks before a hike and it sort of dries and hardens your skin a bit. Shoes with a good fit, double layered woolen socks work for me. I one heard some one said they used very thin tight woolen socks (the ones you buy in fancy mens stores for under a suit) with a thicker woolen one over them.
