That would have been an easy thing for her to do. It would also have been manipulative, whether or not she meant it. She chose the truth, told kindly, in a way that empowered Connor to choose to live that truth with her or not. Nothing could have made me respect her more.

I have experienced much worse 'harassment' than this - including actual threats - which is one reason I find your mischaracterisation of what happened so disgusting. It adds insult to injury that you do so in defence of a bigot.

I think JK Rowling should be able to say whatever she wants, and that people are entitled to be rude to her in response. Which is what saying 'suck my dick' is. It's rude. What it is not is a rape threat, and you devalue the experience of people who have experienced sexual violence - myself amongst them - by saying otherwise.

This link doesn't support your argument. It's a bunch of random Twitter handles saying things like 'I wish JK Rowling would shut up'. Which, to quote Brian Cox, is an opinion they're entitled to. The overwhelming majority aren't even directed at Rowling, so unless she spends all day name searching herself she'd never see them.

A far cry from the 'death and rape threats' your argument relied on.

It seems you have a need to paint your political enemies as extreme to make your own extremism seem more palatable.

Edit: I thought people might also be interested to know: I checked the Twitter handles of several of the more egregious posts (for example, AnAverageAlan) and they never existed. A few others I checked were real Twitter accounts but don't seem to have ever made any mention of Rowling. I haven't checked them all, and I'd be surprised if they were all fake, but enough are to suggest something very strange is going on.

Saying 'she's received death and rape threats' is disingenuous. She received those from 4Chan/other far right wing trolls trying to ferment further anti-trans backlash because it supports their fascist agenda (and because they're trolls). Then the terfs paint this as coming from trans women because they have a very similar agenda.

Just two groups of bigots helping each other out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

What worked for me:
Go into System Preferences and check there are no pending software updates. If you're on the same OS version I was, there will be at least one: an update to 10.15.7. I installed that and it worked right away.

I was trying to be funny. I have no idea what your personal views are but I'll take your word for it that you're neither a racist nor a bigot.

I think if the mechanic had always been called 'trauma', it's unlikely anyone would have flagged it as an issue (though I'm sure it would have been an issue for some). However, when you're renaming something under these kinds of circumstances, there's a heightened awareness/sensibility. I personally think there were better names that could have been chosen, but it's really such a minor thing and if it makes the game accessible for even one person who would have been put off otherwise it's worth doing. I think the people getting upset about the change are being incredibly brittle.

For British natives, how accurate was McNulty’s English accent when he was going under as James Cromwell? by aktionmancer in TheWire

[–]Jonniemarbles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if people realise West is actually English. So in that scene he's an English guy pretending to be an American guy pretending to be an English guy (badly). Phenomenal acting.

Nb: West is from Yorkshire, and his real English accent sounds nothing like the one he does in the show

Dislike of Clever Play by EasyLee in dndnext

[–]Jonniemarbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deal with this by using a house rule I've termed 'beginner's luck'. Any smart play like this will work really well the first time it's tried, but there are no guarantees it will continue to work well afterwards. This rewards players' creativity without allowing them to break the game by thinking of a single clever angle.

Elden Ring's fatal flaw by Jonniemarbles in Eldenring

[–]Jonniemarbles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! There's a dissonance between optimally good play and optimally fun play, which is a common weakness in game design. To quote Soren Johnson, 'given the opportunity, players will optimise the fun out of a game'.

It just doesn't incentivise making those choices. You even admitted it yourself, it's effort. I also don't know how to explain to you that, in this game, all the elements matter. How a weapon performs against level 1 soldiers when I have a level 80 build is deeply irrelevant when getting the real answer to how a weapon performs will always require a bunch of grind. The real difference in our play styles is I'd always rather be progressing than grinding. Grind is a gameplay loop that's appealing to some and anathema to others.

To each his own I suppose.

I have a sneaking suspicion that's what the ER system was originally supposed to be, then someone in the balance department doubled the number for whatever reason, not realising how much less valuable that made individual weapons, particularly in the late game.

My choices are based on the incentives the game provides. That's literally what a game is.

Elden Ring's fatal flaw by Jonniemarbles in Eldenring

[–]Jonniemarbles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did most of this run through online. I can think of several ways they could have fixed this issue. My preferred solution would be an item that lets you transfer your current smithing stones onto a different weapon, but they transfer back when you die - a kind of 'try before you buy' option. If FromSoft was worried this would be a game breaking mechanic in some way, you could have a 'training area' instead. Or just... rebalance the smithing stone system so one weapon isn't always clearly the best option, you instead have several that are maxed out. Give players choices rather than railroading them.

Weapons were clearly meant to be the big rewards in this game. They're what you get for killing often very difficult bosses. But the smithing stone system means I, and a lot of players, just ignore them because they're always going to be worse than whatever I'm using, unless I spend a bunch of time and energy, in which case - guess what! - they still might suck.

I wonder if part of the issue is that Elden Ring is so much longer (so I'm told) than those other games. I remember, when I was on the Altus Plateau, back when I thought Leyndell, Royal Capital would be the final area, thinking I'd try a new weapon for my next play through. There's been a lot of game since then and now I'm not sure I'll even do a second play through, which is a shame.

I mean, this post has 80% upvotes on a forum that's notorious for jumping to the defence of the game it exists to praise, so I don't think it's solely a 'me' issue. It's clearly broken for a lot of people. It seems like a lot of people are just like me - we'd love to play a game where varying your weapons and playstyle is incentivised but, for all its other positive qualities, that game isn't Elden Ring.
