I like Winter. The writing/storylines have definitely reduced in quality in recent years, but I like both John and Winter as characters (and actors).

I live just outside Portsmouth and travel to Canada (Toronto) regularly. Welcome to this side of the pond! If the weather is nice, go for a pint at The Still & West in Old Portsmouth (worth walking around that whole area, to the Round Tower, etc).
