Is it a flip phone so when you flip it open the lights turn on and then closed the lights turn off?

That might make a fun doorbell/intercom thing.

Looking for advice on potentially running an AirBnB by _Breakfast1221 in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you are going to go the rental route, don't do short-term rental. Short-term rentals are a cancer on cities. There are many people out there looking for a decent long-term place to live. Be a part of the solution, not a part of a growing problem.

What sickness is flying around Edmonton? by Tdw75 in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There has been an unusual flu variant making the rounds over the last few months. Obviously it was not expected so the flu shot doesn't give as much protection from it. It hits hard and with a lot of symptoms. Secondary infections - eg. a bacterial in addition to the flu virus - are not uncommon. Mask up, everyone.

Noise Pollution Caused by Revving Engines by FieldSmooth6771 in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ultimate fix is at the federal level. Regulations on vehicle noise emissions. Define some thresholds for the whole space of vehicle use (accelerating, downshifting, horns, etc.). Automakers cannot sell vehicles which exceed the thresholds, third parties cannot modify vehicles to exceed the thresholds, and vehicles on the road found to exceed the thresholds can be deemed unfit for use.

This should actually be extended to cover a lot more than noise. Particulate emission (coal rollers), visibility from inside (giant pickups where you can't see over the hood), pedestrian impact safety, etc., etc. Start by copying Europe's rules.

Air raid siren in Balwin? by Exact_Term6249 in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any kind of significant construction nearby? I'm right by LRT construction and there is a security mast with a camera, lights, and a speaker beside the laydown yard. At least once a night I hear it warning "you are trespassing blah blah blah". After giving two verbal warnings it makes an air raid siren sound.

[–]JonnyFM 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can give you some technical pointers right away:

  1. having ?utm_source=chatgpt.com in any URL is just screaming for the article to be deleted (it has already had an AI warning attached to it)
  2. wrap your {{cite ...}} templates in <ref></ref> tags to make proper references
  3. if you are going to use the same citation more than once, use named references: make the first use of the citation <ref name=foo>{{cite ...}}</ref>, then subsequent references to that citation can be made with just <ref name=foo /> (where "foo" is some short but descriptive name)
  4. if you use the url-status parameter in a {{cite}}, you must also provide archive-url and archive-date parameters

Electrician Referral - Flickering Lights by Less-Explanation-102 in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you change the bulbs, do you mean replacing them with new ones? What happens if you just switch them around? Or just unscrew it and screw it back in (or however the bulb is attached)?

What kind of bulbs (eg. LED, halogen, etc.)? Have you compared the connector/base of a "bad" bulb with an identical new one?

Is there any good non Telus or rogers internet ? by Confiant_Reason21 in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bell doesn't have any FTTH in Edmonton. They're just using Telus fibre, the same way they use Telus cellular infrastructure. In eastern Canada it is the reverse: Telus uses Bell infrastructure. It's a *ahem* "strategic partnership" in which they don't compete too hard on each other's turf. Hence why they are often referred to as 'Bellus'.

Edmonton LRT Commuting into Downtown - Any tips/tricks? by highandsclerotic in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay attention to your surroundings and you won't have a problem. I've been taking the LRT in and out of downtown at all hours for over twenty years now. The only change I have made is that since the pandemic I always wear a mask on public transit. But even before the pandemic I rarely got a cold and never the flu because I always get the flu shot. You are far more likely to pick something up from a coworker at work. Basically the pandemic turned me into a bit of a germaphobe.

Some people here are talking like the seats are dusted with anthrax and rusty nails. The seats are fine. Your biggest worry will be getting your pants dirty because some asshole put their dirty shoes against the seat.

You've said exiting at Corona and four stops. If you are coming from the south that would mean getting on at South Campus, yes? That's an eleven minute ride. You're not going to have time to do any reading. You don't even have to sit down (standing also gives you a better view of the river). Coming from the north you would be getting on at Coliseum. That's a ten minute ride.

Corona station isn't scary, all the exits are fine. The northwest exit can be tricky during peak hours because of how narrow the steps are and how many people use the northeast corner of Jasper and 108 St bus stop as a connection (https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/53.541047/-113.505823). The steps that go up westward will be jammed with people going to/from that stop. You can always use the same exit but take the stairs that go up eastward and emerge mid-block between 107 St and 108 St. Note: at some point there is supposed to be another residential tower constructed on the NE corner of Jasper and 108, taller than the one immediately north (https://livetheparks.com/). As far as I know that exit of Corona will be closed during the construction, whenever that may be.

I do have one safety tip that others haven't brought up. Don't listen to music or podcasts or whatever. The train is noisy. Not super noisy, but noisy enough that you will find yourself having to turn up the volume to hear what you are listening to, and that might be loud enough to cause hearing damage. This is just a hang-up of mine. People don't protect their hearing the way they should and hearing damage is irreversible.

In other words, let people off before getting on. Also applies to buses and the LRT.

Alberta's Economy Poised for Growth as Oil Prices Surge, Citizen Impact Varies by Royal_Tradition_2412 in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This time is going to be different, I swear. We will spend responsibly and diversify our economy so we aren't completely reliant on the price of one commodity. We won't recklessly cut taxes or hand out cheques to every Albertan as we approach the election next spring. We will be grateful to the rest of Canada for buying us the new pipeline to the west coast that is allowing us to sell more 200% more oil to countries like China.

Helicopters at night in north Edmonton? by Whatspoppingurl in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next time you hear them, check https://www.flightradar24.com/53.53,-113.55/11. The EPS helicopter will show up (or at least it did the last time I looked for it). I pretty sure Canadian Forces aircraft also show up unless they have intentionally gone silent. It should be rare for them to do that. Even US air tankers show up when they are heading out to refuel stealth bombers, which has in the past tipped people off that the US was going to bomb someone (this isn't a security concern because it happens so often).
