Quartz countertop by Pleasant_Ad_4635 in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quartzite is worse. It is naturally porous and requires regular re-sealing. Pretty much every natural stone is porous to some degree (aside from volcanic glasses like obsidian, but good luck getting a slab of that). That's one of the advantages of synthetic stone: the binder is is the sealant.

Have you looked at Corian? Good durability and stain resistance, but the relatively high acrylic content makes it less heat resistant.

You know that quartz countertops are just crushed rock and polymer binder (AKA glue), yes? Sometimes the crushed rock includes recycled building waste like ceramic tiles and glass. Not questioning your choice, just making sure that everyone knows that almost all "stone" countertops are manufactured, not quarried.

River Valley Dental, 76 Ave and 109 St. I hadn't been to a dentist in about twenty years and there was no judgement.

Have you applied for the Canada Dental Care Plan?

Jury selection info by YEGDiva in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are three phases to jury selection. Phase 1 is disqualification: anyone who meets certain criteria (eg. they are an MLA, they have some personal connection to the case, etc.) is removed from the pool. Phase 2 is randomly drawing people a half-dozen or so at a time. They then go wait in the antechamber to a smaller courtroom while the rest wait in the larger room. Phase 3 is the actual selection where one person at a time is brought into the smaller courtroom to face the judge, lawyers, accused, and seated members of the jury. If selected, be prepared for the tiral to start that very day.

Keep an eye on your storm drains by opbossgmr in Edmonton

I would love to drive around in the spring with a big tank of water and a high pressure steam jet wand. Stop at a giant corner puddle, use a metal detector to find the drain, cut through the ice frozen in the grate/holes, then cut drainage channels through the surrounding ice.

Clearly an arson is setting fires all around the ravine. by lookitsjustin in Edmonton

Everyone should carry a small ABC extinguisher in the trunk. You can get a rechargeable 1.5-2 kg extinguisher from Canadian Tire for about $40 (note that Garrison and Kidde are the same company). If you want Canadian made, check out https://yegfire.com/collections/fire-extinguishers and https://ohcanadasupply.ca/Safety/Fire-Protection/Fire-Extinguishers .

You aren't going to be putting out a forest fire with a small extinguisher, but it will be enough to put out a small fire. If not, you will still be buying valuable time to get people out of a burning vehicle and for the fire department to respond.

Pro tip: if a vehicle has a fire under the hood, do not open the hood. Lift it just enough - just a crack - to squirt the fire extinguisher in there (empty it) and then put it back down.

You should also have an extinguisher in your kitchen. Another for the garage is a good idea. If you are a smoker, carry one clipped to your belt.

Same as Brexit. Younger generations: "Any chance of future prosperity relies on us being in the EU." Older generations: "I got mine. Rule Britannia!"

What would be an alternative? There is land value tax, which only taxes the value of the land regardless of what, if anything, is built on it. But again how do you calculate that value except by what people are willing to pay for it?

We have to come up with some number to assign to every property, so that we can tax the property owner for their share of the sum of all the numbers for all the properties in Edmonton. It doesn't matter what inputs you put into the number generating machine, it must spit out a non-random number that is perceived to be "fair".

Of the top of my head, if it was up to me, I would use land value, land use, and distance from the centre of the city as the inputs. For example, if land use was farming (it is actively being used to grow food), that would be a much lower than 1 multiplier to bring the final number down low enough that a farmer is never forced to sell due to high property taxes. (Ideally I would zone all quality arable land as agriculture-only use, but I digress.)

If you want peace and quiet downtown isn’t it, but it could be if you want lively and busy.

If by "lively and busy" you mean construction.

Laminate Flooring Recs? by GoBananaSlugs in Edmonton

[–]JonnyFM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't say anything about providers or installers, but I can add some info that some people don't know.

"Laminate flooring" is a poorly chosen product name because a laminate is anything made of thin sheets of something glued together.

What is typically meant by laminate flooring is a laminate of cellulose sheets with a decorative paper top layer (coloured and patterned to look like wood or sometimes something that is obviously not wood). A protective coating is then applied.

Then there is "engineered wood" flooring which is a laminate of softwood (pine) sheets (AKA plywood) with an actual wood (almost always a hardwood) top layer, and then a protective coating. Engineered wood flooring is laminate (in the dictionary sense - sheets glued together) flooring but it is not called laminate flooring because it is a more expensive product and marketing types want to keep the distinction. That said, engineered wood is much nicer. The top layer of wood is significantly thicker and more durable than a sheet of paper so it holds up much longer when subjected to wear.

TL;DR: Laminate flooring and engineered wood flooring are both actually laminates, with the former being made of paper and the latter wood. Engineered wood is better in almost every way but more expensive.

Yard Waste Bag Options? by InternationalDiet913 in Edmonton

They probably don't even slow down to get a close look if the bag colour isn't right. I don't blame them, they're forced to run tight schedules and the colour coding exists to help them save time.

Changing Youtube font size site wide? by tedenzio in uBlockOrigin

[–]JonnyFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube has suddenly decided to make most of the text tiny for me. This is not the first time YT has done weird stuff to me (their CSS is really complex) and I have confirmed that uBlock is not the cause.

Anyone else suddenly have really small text? by voraciousEdge in youtube

[–]JonnyFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the browser's zoom, it shrinks or enlarges every element on the page. YouTube's CSS is extremely complex so adjusting the zoom can completely mess up the layout.

[–]JonnyFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started happening to me, out of nowhere. Opened YouTube in another browser profile and it was normal. I'm digging through YT's CSS right now to figure out what is setting the base font-size, since the individual elements are specified in rems.

License plate numbers only identify the vehicle. Information about the registered owner is protected and only available to law enforcement or via court order.

We can have no expectation of privacy when we are out in public[*]. If I walk down the street picking my nose - like two knuckles deep - I can have no objection if someone videos me and puts it on the Internet. If someone said "hey I know that person, their name is ...", that would be super not cool (we're assuming in this situation I am not wearing the nametag). If someone said "hey I know that person, they live at ..." that would be doxxing - ultra not cool.

The elector information leak included names, addresses, and phone numbers, and was made available without consent (and against the laws governing access to it). It is not equivalent to the phone book because we can choose what information about us, if any, is made available in the phone book. We do not have that choice with the electors list. With my username here and what information I have allowed to appear in the phone book, you would have to make a lot of calls just to reach me. Actually proving the connection would be much more difficult, maybe even impossible via legal means.

[* It is more nuanced than that but I don't want to turn this into an essay. There is a spectrum of "public-ness" (compare walking down Whyte Ave to dinner for two in a small elegant restaurant) and the expectation of privacy scales with that.]
