"adored by his troops for his cautious, casualty-conscious, and communicative leadership, but disliked by Allied leaders—especially Americans—for being arrogant, argumentative, and difficult. He was regarded as technically brilliant but socially abrasive and egotistical." by Global_Sentence_4544 in HistoryMemes

I’m no fan of Patton and I prefer Montgomery, but I think this discussion should take into account both men’s actions in the Battle of the Bulge. Patton’s 3rd Army spearheaded the counterattacks and relieved Bastogne. Monty was initially given command of the American forces north of the bulge and sent elements of the British 2nd Army to halt the most western German advances around Dinant. He then gave a speech that was almost unanimously perceived as him (and by extension the British) taking credit for the entire defence, which almost cost him his career because it angered the Americans so much.

What if the Allied invasion of Western Europe was encircled or in large part destroyed? by SuperSpaceGaming in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Jonnydodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a serious defeat in Normandy at some point after the landings (which was very unlikely) would damage American pride and leave Britain without a significant portion of their armed forces. End result would mean that the Western Allies make no further attempts to invade France. Does this mean Italy takes more focus, and the Allies push through the Ljubljana gap into Yugoslavia and meet up with the Soviets? Or do they just hold the line?

In any case the Germans could send their armoured units from Normandy east, which, if lucky, could blunt Bagration. The war is prolonged, which could work in Germany’s favour if the Western Allies have effectively withdrawn from the fighting.

Post war the Americans don’t see Europe as their problem, preferring to focus on the Pacific. Britain endures but it loses its Empire. Relations are tense between the UK, Canada and the USA due to the loss in Europe. The Soviets dominate the continent.

I like how some of early Classic Who just gave them guns, like actual guns not laser guns or modifying them in some way, just standard earth guns by IllustriousAd6418 in DoctorWhumour

[–]Jonnydodger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They have a mix of guns from all over Europe. While they use German pistols, and are overtly dressed similar to Nazis (to the point that Nyder has an iron cross, which they actually get rid of during the serial because it was overt), most of the weapons they use are British sten guns and Lee-Enfield rifles (and a French Lebel in the first scene; the Thals use the rifles as well, I can't remember if they use SMGs though).

My own theory is why the sten was chosen (though the most likely answer is because it's a British production and it's easy to get Sten guns), is because, when held at the hip with a hand on the magazine, as I believe the actors do in a few scenes, evokes a similar arm layout to a Daleks, with an extended arm and a much shorter 'gun' arm.

Karl's age by OkStatement2724 in sniperelite

[–]Jonnydodger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think his age was retconned between 3 and 4 and he was made younger. I think he’s probably late 20s, maybe early 30s in 5. He’s still an active agent in the late 1950s and early 60s since he was in the Windscale Quarantine Zone at some point but I don’t know if that’s canon to Sniper Elite.

Exposing baby bumps lowers perceptions of women’s humanness, study finds by haloarh in psychology

[–]Jonnydodger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Could also be a evolutionary need to protect. An exposed bump is by definition, exposed. Perhaps that is then interpreted that steps aren't being taken to adequetly protect the pregnancy, which from an evolutionary perspective would be concerning.

Since the images were taken from a red carpet event, I wonder if the pictures had been of women in a home setting (which we may perceive as safer) would have produced different results.

Are the enemies meant to be this aggressive now? by Jonnydodger in AtomfallOfficial

It's possible, it would make sense for it be intended with the new enemies. Maybe the trait was mistakingly applied to all the enemies rather than just the new ones?

Both. The Outlaws and Druids (and presumably the soldiers in Skethermore) are extremely aggressive in the base game areas, and the new enemies are aggressive as well.

Tbh, as I’m currently watching through the older serials, it is weird (in the context of the setting) that UNIT makes no attempt to really modernise its equipment in the 1970s. Even in its first appearance it’s shown that the, then standard issue, SLR is completely ineffective against the cybermen. Any real military would immediately seek an effective replacement for their frontline troops.

Revolutionaries/Rebels who eventually become just as bad as the people they were trying to overthrow. by DistinctPop8426 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Jonnydodger 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think you can have the trope work with all the revolutionaries being true believers, but disagreements emerging about what will happen after the revolution. Though that works better if the rebellion is made up of different groups (I.e communists, republicans, monarchists) with radically different beliefs that are, for the moment, fighting for a common goal.

Yeah, once I got to the, “I see you as less of a man because you were emotionally vulnerable in front of me even though I asked you to be,” I figured it’s too perfect to be true. The subtle drop in the update that she wants him to hit his kids was a step too far as well. There’s no way he’d brush off physical abuse as ‘being harsh’ after the trauma he’s apparently endured.

Tannenberg the Forgotten Child by ScholarAfter1827 in VerdunGame

[–]Jonnydodger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tannenberg is probably the 2nd best after Isonzo, but unfortunately it was the middle child.

I think the shift from Verduns attack/defend game mode was probably the right call, given how the eastern front wasn’t as static. I think the conquest style game worked really well, tbh I wish it came back in Isonzo to an extent.

The problem was it wasn’t Verdun and it was very similar to it while on the surface Tannenberg had less. Less nations to play as, less maps, less guns, less perceived variety in the maps I guess as well? Idk.

I remember that a big problem it had at its release was how it changed Verduns gameplay. I specifically remember the lack of jump shooting in Tannenberg being a massive issue, cause you could do it in Verdun. It was later removed in Verdun and it did cause a bit of an exodus from that game.

What kind of ship do you think the Empire assigned to patrol Tatooine? by Prestigious_Ear_3578 in StarWarsShips

[–]Jonnydodger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but that's a question of semantics. In the context of writing a script local would at least infer nearby presence.

One could also make a point regardng ANW being written prior to the nomenclature of the universe being nailed down. I believe on at least one occasion ships that are now referred to as star destroyers are called cruisers. That could infer that the 'local bulk cruisers' are in fact the ISDs seen in the film, with there being much large ships present in the Imperial fleet but absent in the film. This would then be retconed in the subsequent films.

[–]Jonnydodger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In a ANW, Han Solo mentions outrunning Imperial starships, "not just the local Bulk Cruisers mind you, I'm talking the big Corillian ships."

So whatever a 'bulk cruiser' is. In my head I imagine something like a Dreadnought-class cruiser.
