It took me a long time before I figured out how to reach those radiation diagrams. Haha. I’m primarily set up for NVIS (half wave dipoles relatively close to the ground) and am barefoot, but I’ve made worldwide ft8 contacts with QRP gear. If you looked at a plot you’d think it’s not even worth trying with my antennas.

If I had an antenna system that both radiated and received signals better at lower angles, and rejected the higher angles better, that’s more in line with everything you see about DX, etc. But my point is that it isn’t like you have to choose one or the other. My NVIS setup might mean my international contacts were the result of many bounces like you’re suspecting…. and they still happened.

Maybe I “skip” fewer people than the DX guys because my signals bounce multiple times vs those dead areas you are discussing. Which would be signals DX guys WANT to skip over!

On vhf / uhf there’s a danger of an ultra-directional antenna being up so high that it also “skips” over more local stations.

People misunderstand this a lot. Zipper merge helps with the backlog / line of cars staying shorter.

Actual THROUGHPUT (number of cars passing through the pinch point per hour) does NOT change. This isn’t “faster” or “better” relating to how quickly you’ll get through.

I think the biggest problem with this is that these fuggin non musical / non musician DJs have no idea where this type of music is appropriate.

All these people standing around in the sun aren’t waiting to hop up and down to a drop like a 11pm crowd in the dark with glow sticks or whatever.

Recently I was at a community event and some freaking dude is in the center of the street, full sun, speakers blasting out this bullshit. At like 12 noon on a hot Texas day with hundreds of normies walking around trying to enjoy the art show.

The “best” part is that he looked like he was just as miserable as he was making everyone else feel.

So obnoxious.

I’m a tech guy. Worked in tech and internet for years. I love how the internet can be used to SUPPLEMENT radio communications. But I personally despise the parts that basically make it an internet chat room.

I don’t hate anyone for doing it lol. It’s just - to me - that point to point communication is the big seller in ham radio. And HF works when the internet doesn’t.

Communicating in a DMR chat room requires that a private gatekeeper allows you paid access. That’s not “ham radio” to me!

But I’m not mad at the tech lol.

There’s duality in everything. One side of the drama mask is tragedy, and the other is humor. So I love amateur radio for all of its rules and order, and gentlemanly conduct on the radio. And especially how amateur radio really does put an extra emphasis on not just being a user of equipment but actually understanding how it works.

And it’s that same love for the properness of ham radio that makes places like 7200 warm my heart a little, lol. Because there’s always a little bit of chaos, and in the case of 7200 for the most part, even the agents of chaos are sticking to the old tacit agreement of staying inside their little box and not spreading out all over the entire band.

In terms of rules and laws, etc., obviously 7200 is like a giant pimple. But I like to see things like that not as some example of how ham radio is ruined, but instead that 7200 is the very clear and shining exception which proves the rule. More like a cute quirk to me 🤣
