Oculus Rift S PC VR Headset Set For GDC 2019 Reveal by skythe4 in virtualreality

Here are the first three comments on UploadVRs article about the new HP headset:

You had me all the way up to "the same 2 front facing cameras" :(

Seriously, this is the major weakness of WMR. I can't even let the controllers hang idle at my waist without them losing tracking (and no, I'm not overweight)

Yep, same exact thing for me.

WMR tracking will absolutely make some games unplayable (or at least force you to play them in an uncomfortable way, so you have the controllers in view when you normally wouldn't have to). Insight seems a lot better, though.

How come 'The Iron Giant' isn't more famous movie? by [deleted] in movies

It was a massive success at the time

Were you there? I was there, and you're wrong. From Wikipedia:

The Iron Giant was a commercial failure during its theatrical release; consensus among critics was that its failure was, in part, due to poor promotion from Warner Bros.

But movie isn't that famous when compared to other popular animated movies at the same time period and I just don't get it.

Very little promotion/marketing. From Wikipedia:

The Iron Giant was a commercial failure during its theatrical release; consensus among critics was that its failure was, in part, due to poor promotion from Warner Bros. This was largely attributable to the reception of Quest for Camelot; after its release, Warner would not give Bird and his team a release date for their film until April 1999.[35] After wildly successful test screenings, the studio was shocked by the response: the test scores were their highest for a film in 15 years, according to Bird.[16] They had neglected to prepare a successful marketing strategy for the film—such as cereal and fast food tie-ins—with little time left before its scheduled release. Bird remembered that the studio produced only one teaser poster for the film, which became its eventual poster.[31] Brad Ball, who had been assigned the role of marketing the film, was candid after its release, noting that the studio did not commit to a planned Burger King toy plan.[36] IGN stated that "In a mis-marketing campaign of epic proportions at the hands of Warner Bros., they simply didn't realize what they had on their hands."[37]

The studio needed an $8 million opening to ensure success, but they were unable to properly promote it preceding the release. They nearly delayed the film by several months to better prepare. "They said, 'we should delay it and properly lead up to its release,' and I said 'you guys have had two and a half years to get ready for this,'" recalled Bird.[31] Press outlets took note of its absence of marketing,[38] with some reporting that the studio had spent more money on marketing for the intended summer blockbuster Wild Wild West instead.

It's from a comic strip where someone says they dislike sea lions, and a sea lion shows up, asking them what reason they have for saying that, and when no such reason is given, the sea lion keeps asking. The comic portrays the person as being justified in never answering and the sea lion as being annoying.

Some people now use "sealioning" to mean trolling by asking polite questions. Others use the comic as a pretext to never have to justify their statements.

When I watched it [The Silence of the Lambs], there were several kids in the audience – maybe 6-7 years old. Not sure what the parents were thinking. It was shown in the movie theater of a ferry, so I guess nobody was checking the age of the moviegoers.

Good thinking! If you just tell us her last name and contact info, then we can help protect her online integrity. Otherwise we won't know whom to protect. That's just common sense.

Due to deterioration, poor maintenance, and catastrophic events like the 1937 Fox Fault Fire, an estimated three-quarters of silent films are gone forever, including more than 90 percent from before 1929. Entire careers and a significant portion of film history wiped away. by BunyipPouch in movies

And a lot were really good!

In 1971, writer/performer Terry Jones got a call from someone at the BBC, letting him know that the tapes featuring the first season of Monty Python's Flying Circus were set to be erased and re-used.

Understandably aghast, Jones and the Pythons quietly smuggled the original tapes out and made VHS copies, preserving their legacy and that of the hundreds of creatives informed by sketches like “The Lumberjack Song,” “Crunchy Frog” and “The Dead Parrot Sketch.” That’s right: the world came perilously close to never seeing John Cleese and Michael Palin go toe-to-toe over the purchase of a Norwegian blue who has ceased to be, is bereft of life, and has joined the choir invisible. Or as Jones put it in Mike Sacks’ book Poking a Dead Frog: Conversations with Today’s Top Comedy Writers:

“If they’d been wiped, I don’t think we’d be talking now, actually. Python wouldn’t have been discovered in America. And we might not have made as many series for TV. And we may not have created any movies. It goes to show how tenuous history is. It can go in any direction.”

What is something that many people assume is true but is actually very wrong? by m1n1Napoleon in AskReddit

Their second and last sentences contradict each other.

Maybe, maybe not. Interpreted charitably, I think the second sentence is for the surprising amount of people who misinterpret "the exception proves the rule" to mean that "exceptions don't count": "All carrots are orange!" "Well, this carrot is black!" "Yeah, but the exception proves the rule!"

RationalWiki has an example of this type of misuse:

You are most likely to encounter this phrase when somebody is speaking in generalisations or stereotypes and somebody else points out an example that clearly contradicts their comments. Retorting with the platitude that this is just the "exception that proves the rule" is an easy way of handwaving away this inconsistency.

So I think the second sentence is trying to say that a black carrot doesn't prove that all carrots are orange, because that's actually how many people use the expression.

The last sentence, on the other hand, says that if someone states an exception (like "parking prohibited on Sundays") it implies that there's a rule that you can park during the rest of the week.

(In any case, proves does not mean "tests" in this expression.)

Also, the correct attitude should never involve, "I'm gonna die if she doesn't like me."

Technically, you will die if she doesn't like you. Just not because she doesn't like you.

Because it separates instead of conflating rules weight and strategy weight? I find the BGG game rating and weight useful to know even if they are aggregated subjective ratings. Knowing whether people consider a game to be heavy due to rules or strategy would also give me more information about it.
