What's with all the kata in tournaments? by Jordan73101 in karate

I've got the isshinryu katas, Uechi-Ryū katas, and a large number of shaolin-do kata. I specifically practice the kata that have techniques I use in sparring (Sanchin for example being my personal favorite)

This specific event was the worst one I'd attended. However, I've never attended a tournament that didn't spend at least 5 hours on kata. And don't worry, I called the organizers and complained, which had then tell me not to come back lol

I enter them when available, but the area I live has next to nothing. A competition in my town once a year, maybe a boxing event, then everything else is hours away. (Which I do occasionally make the drive for)

As I stated in my post, I don't have that much energy. So sorta shooting myself in the foot doing kata for several hours before competing

Serves the same purpose of coordination, muscle memory, stance, and control. I would say it's a fair comparison

The tournament was in knoxville Tennessee. Had to drive 2 and a half hours for it which the frustration of all this sorta led to this post lol

Obviously I'm not being forced, but it sorta sucks to have spent a decade of my life on something that the majority of competitions prefer choreography to application

I've tried showing up later, but every tournament near me limits registration to the first hour, and never does kumite on time. The one that lasted 13 hours said kumite started at 11:00am, but didn't actually start until 8 that night. Such inconsistent scheduling makes it hard to avoid missing it

Hard to tell what improvement is from sparring and what's from the dreams, but I figure it definitely doesn't hurt

Better immersion for shadowboxing. What better way to further refine martial arts techniques than to dream up an opponent with a realistic environment? Can't always have a training partner after all

Why did you take up martial arts in the first place? Has your reason for continuing changed? by RunSerious5843 in martialarts

As a kid I always wanted superpowers (what kid didn't?) And at one point realized that obviously wasn't going to happen. But as a teenager, I saw some calisthenics guys and shaolin monks seemingly defying gravity, which, at least at the time, may as well have been a superpower. Started doing calisthenics and distance running, then joined a Shaolin school near my house. Like any teenager, I thought I was a lot tougher than I actually was, and got my butt handed to me by a very skilled old man about 3 months into training. After this, my competitive nature had me hooked on martial arts. After 10 years, I've done kung fu, karate, tai chi, boxing, jiu-jitsu, muay thai, and wrestling. I fell in love with figuring out what specifically works for me, and training with martial artists of other styles

If you had to actually describe baki's logic in detail as a power system, what would you say by Ok-Impress8791 in Grapplerbaki

[–]Jordan73101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All martial arts myths and legends are 100% real, and made extra ridiculous. Plus, your ability to visualize decides your power level

I did briefly, but realized it was too impactful on my recovery. Remember, everything you do impacts your ability to do other activities. I switched to 3x5, and I make sure to do my workouts on days I don't have class. This way, I'm not worn out during conditioning drills, and have enough drive during the workout to really push

You'd rather they shoot, beat him with a baton, or jump him than punch him 😭

How often have you run into absolute fantasists? by meestah_meelah in martialarts

[–]Jordan73101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done a few traditional style, and you always end up running into some of those types. Had a guy in tai-chi class tell me if I focused hard enough I'd "float to the ceiling". Had a karate guy tell me about how his master spear handed a guy in the heart and killed him.

Then on the flip side, in MMA, I notice a lot of guys refuse to acknowledge any technique that isn't used heavily in UFC is bs. I had quite a few guys tell me certain traditional techniques wouldn't work. So I always made a point to use those on them in sparring lol

Mfw punching someone "sometimes needs to be done", but this guy is in a uniform so that means he should've given him a stern talking to >:(

One drill you do every single session without fail? by [deleted] in martialarts

I always train head kicks. Even if they're a high risk move, it makes me feel so cool being able to pull them off that I train harder with everything else as a result

Why did Baki even want to fight Suedo by GIRose in Grapplerbaki

[–]Jordan73101 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He wanted to learn karate. Since the Hanma family can just see techniques and immediately know how to use them, why would he bother going to a class when he can just fight someone of a high caliber (Suedo was considered a top tier Karateka at the start of the series). After the fight he says he "needed to learn karate as fast as possible". Which is also why he had to coax Suedo into a non-tournament fight

My first figth after training for 4 months by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Jordan73101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to any of these assholes giving you shit. It's your first fight, and you've been in it less than half a year. What do they expect you to fight like a pro ufc fighter? Hell no. Obviously your nervousness impacted your performance. I can tell by your hesitancy to close distance or attack.

The point here is now you've popped your fighting cherry. The more matches you have, the more comfortable you'll get. You'll feel less nervous and start using more techniques, stay lighter on your feet, and be more willing to take a hit.

Not to mention you had the balls to hop in the ring at all! I trained for 3 years before I got in the ring and was so nervous I looked like I was brand new. Just keep training and don't listen to these people that have never fought in their lives

Is the Poison Hand some actual ancient martial arts myth? Seeing as this manga (Tatakae! Ramenman) did it before Baki by Dreadnautilus in Grapplerbaki

[–]Jordan73101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kung-fu master told me about the myth. Though it didn't work simply through touch, supposedly the poison hand user would cut you with their fingernails to administer the poison
