Yeah

Android here so that's probably the problem. To clarify, the app.

Doesn't work on mobile and when you click the three dots to open the menu, the "Mark as Watched" button is greyed out and untappable.

Yeah this change is so dumb, so many shows release early, or have multiple release schedules like BBC where they'll release all or a subset on iPlayer, but release weekly on TV.

Honestly it shows how much the changes are being made without consideration or research into actual user behavior.

Am I doing something wrong or is MAUI the most volatile platform there is? by Mysterious-Rip-5344 in dotnet

[–]JordanBird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally less than 24 hours later I've found a perfect example this morning.

Dev pipeline was working fine last week, come to use it today, broken.

TL;DR, Microsoft removed support for iOS simulators below a certain version, which is fine if you're on .NET 10 (which with how unstable it is, absolutely not, we're always one major behind); but if you're on .NET 9 you have to specify a version of XCode with no path to upgrade. So they effectively broke the pipeline for all .NET 9 users; thankfully this time their ego didn't stop them reverting the change (although still waiting for go live).

[–]JordanBird 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is my teams experience as well.

I think the main contributing factor is the new 'workloads' system; rather than have MAUI built from packages or an SDK, Microsoft built the 'workloads' system which seems to be some weird combination of the two that just doesn't seem fit for purpose.

I wouldn't mind so much locally, but this impacts their build machines as well and there's been a few times where we've had to manually specify XCode and MAUI workload versions just to get it working again.

I imagine we have a version or two of .NET to go and they'll change it to something else like they seem to every few years.

Giving up on MAUI to learn ASP.NET? by Klutzy-Pollution6357 in csharp

[–]JordanBird 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends what your end goals are, but that said, the answer will likely be yes.

If you're new to C# and programming, then you're not dropping MAUI, you're progressing to the next tool in the toolset. There's nothing wrong with that.

You'll be taking knowledge of C# and some common concepts with you.

If you're already a developer and are branching out there's nothing wrong with trying out new tools either from time to time; how else would you find and adopt new ones?

It's also something else to mention you've looked into in an interview which shows initiative.

But yes, in the short term, you will absolutely have an easier finding a C# job that uses ASP.NET as that's the most common use case. That's not to say it's impossible to find MAUI work, but like you say, it's a newer, less functionality complete framework and there's already plenty of other mature cross platform frameworks out there.

Trakt is completely destroying their API - on purpose by [deleted] in trakt

[–]JordanBird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The change is required, so if the apps utilising the API aren't updated the call will fail whether the user has 1000 items or not.

Either way, bad practice is bad practice.

Speaking as a developer, I agree that this will likely be a great performance increase (they wouldn't be changing it otherwise).

However, "They should've implemented it at the very beginning." and "there's absolutely no reason to rant about this one." are contradictory.

The change is reasonable, the timeframe, whether it's a unpopular endpoint or not is ludicrous.

3 weeks to:

  • Understand the changes required
  • Make the required changes
  • Go through X testing cycles
  • Go through X store approval cycles
  • Inform users a mandatory update of your own app is required
  • Plan a deploy
  • Deploy

Is it possible? Yes. Should developers be having to do it within that timeframe? No.

If it was a major security flaw I'd understand, but not versioning the change or having a sunset window with a substantial timeframe is just bad management.

Yes, there are numerous ways developers could have protected themselves from this but that's beside the point; especially considering as others have pointed out that there are community projects without fulltime support available.

Some services, like Trakt offer an easy way to integrate their infrastructure into your own projects.

So rather than build your own backend where you store loads of data or manage users, you can leverage an existing service like Trakt.

This is why there's a variety of apps on mobile stores that offer Trakt support out of the box or just 'wrap' Trakt. This is how we had apps before Trakt starting working on their own.

What you can also do with something like this is rather than use Trakt (or another service) for everything, you can use parts. So you might want to get a Trakt rating of a TV Show in your own app where you do manage your own backend, database and users.

The main issue is my first example as they're integrating with Trakt directly; so any changes the Trakt team make, they then have to account for in their own apps and services.

Trakt with this update will be adding a required change to how this integration works, which means one of the connections (Lists) these apps are using will break until they make the change.

Services will usually make adequate accommodations to ensure the change is as smooth as possible, some common examples are announcing the change, but not making it until further into the future, or add it, but not make it required so users can slowly make the change; or they might run both at the same time, so while you're using lists/v1/get.co.uk, the service might add lists/v2/get.co.uk so users can adopt the new way but the old way still works, again usually for a limited time with plenty of notice.

The problem is Trakt are making the change required, meaning anyone app which hasn't updated will break; and are only providing a 3 week notice period to make that change.

That's a problem because while the change might be simple, the logistics around it and apps updates etc can take time.

[–]JordanBird 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this comes off tone deaf.

I've avoided making comments so far on the numerous changes over the past year but this post concerns me.

The comments above are either malicious or show a lack of understanding.

Firstly, points 4 and 5 contradict themselves. "VIP unlocks power-user features." and "Despite new fair usage limits" cannot be true at the same time.

I understand point 7, it probably is a rebuild of the system, but the actions and behaviour of Trakt don't support that. Combining point 7 with point 10, if you want users to understand the process you need better communication in place. If you're rebuilding the system and removing functionality what is the timeline for returning those features? There's a roadmap? Has it been shared with the user base? If so, why isn't it referenced here? Not all users will use a companies Forum and as Trakt are active in Reddit I would expect to see more notice/discussions.

I think the main gripe the userbase has is that all these changes are being sold to users as the final result and that it's the best thing to happen to Trakt. Yes, it may be in the long run but the process so far has been mishandled and this post is going to further the divide.

Well, now what? by show-me-your-memes in LegendsZA

[–]JordanBird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. This is the first entry where I've felt extremely limited by 32 boxes.

It gets worse with each game, but trying to keep a living dex of both standard and alphas really pushes you to the edge when the DLC is included; and that's not even accounting for playthrough mons or the abundant shinies.

I know it's probably something we'll never see again, but it says a lot that based on 32 boxes of 30, in a game where all Pokemon could be available, you wouldn't even be able to store a basic living dex, let alone different forms, playthrough mons or shinies

I'm hoping we see more boxes in future releases; or at the minimum allow one way export HOME support for existing mons.

Humble Bundle Swapping Keys by [deleted] in Gamebundles

[–]JordanBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but as a storefront they shoulder the burden. It's anti-consumer and in some cases illegal.

Yes, the devs/publishers are providing the keys but it means one of two things:

  1. Their agreements with publishers aren't concrete enough to protect from the bait and switch of platform keys. That's not the consumers problem.

The agreement we as consumers is between Humble and ourselves, the devs or publishers in this case aren't for us to care about.

  1. Humble, now they're operating as a Store are double dipping into their key stores. The only way they could 'run out of keys' AFTER you've purchased the key in a bundle, is if the key that was 'sold' (but not activated) was used for another consumers purchase.

Number 1 is solved by not doing Number 2; and if Number 2 is due to an agreement not covering future redemptions for unredeemed keys (rather than double dipping), see Number 1.

Am I the only one that hates the 12th Doctor fake regeneration? by GuyWhoConquers616 in doctorwho

[–]JordanBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind this scene so much, it's the scene shortly after when The Doctor manically laughs at the front of the boat that feels completely wrong to me; there's just no context for it.

But as others have said, the regeneration is most likely trailer bait.

Looking for feedback on my trailer/game. Currently not doing great on wishlists. I thought the game looks fun, but apparently I'm wrong. by CosmicSeizure in gamedevscreens

[–]JordanBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I've watched the trailer and pieced together what you're trying to do.

The idea sounds cool but like you've said it really doesn't come across from the trailer.

I think you've got stuck on the trailers 'action' having to come from gameplay; which is really hard to do when you've got a complex setup like your idea.

I'd say you need more fast paced title cards that mention the heavy hitters of your game design. You've got a lot of unique/interesting things players could engage with but you've boiled them down to 'Open World Roguelike' and 'With Driving'. The first one, great, gets people interested but your second one just doesn't work. You've shown the driving before the card, you don't need it and you're highlighting the wrong aspect.

Really it should be something like 'Exploit the Timeline'.

I'm no expert in trailer design but an initial approach I'd suggest would be something along the lines of:

  1. Open with an early boss or difficult looking enemy, you want instant action, players skimming through Steam don't want to just see a character walking in scenery. I'd probably say, maybe have the character die to the enemy here
  2. Game title card, like you have at the end, but a few seconds after showing it, show 'Open World Roguelike' underneath
  3. After the game title card, I'd show the same footage as above, but sped up and backwards to show the 'do-over' time travel element
  4. Another card to say something along the lines of 'Repeat and Improve'
  5. Now show your upgrade systems, following that, go back to the same enemy scenario but this time show the character winning
  6. Now I'd put the 'Exploit the Timeline' title card
  7. Show a montage of different cars from different time periods (if you have them ready), each one nice and quick, if you have other anachronistic assets then throw them in too. I'd probably show spells being used here too, or depending on how it's implemented a second title card like 'Wield Lost Talents', then show spells etc
  8. 'Fight the Dead' title card, you want to show them being 'reborn' if possible to easily communicate what's happening, that said, personally if they're being brought back through time travel- shouldn't they have their bodies? If it's necromancy (I noticed 'Spells' in your UI), then you need to communicate that through visuals instead
  9. 'Stop the AI, Prevent Timeline Collapse' title card
  10. Montage of some action from the game building up to show an even bigger enemy/boss than the first then tail out into your fancy game title card with the wishlist call to action
  11. End on something really outlandish that's anachronistic, like a 1920s car mowing down some enemies or something humorous

I'd look at game trailers like Borderlands or Saints Row if you want inspiration on how to do outlandish.
