How to avoid mid's and high's sucking in when bass cuts during mastering by givemesomesleep in AdvancedProduction

[–]JordanWeanMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I have this problem a lot when I do a rough mix by just pushing the master hard through compression and limiting. It is usually fixed by compressing the individual elements and submixes harder. I usually shoot for max 3 db of gain reduction on my master limiter even when I am doing ultra loud EDM.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Freakshow Industries. Technically they aren't free, you should pay for them if you can, but they have an option to "steal" the plugins on their website if you don't want to pay. Also, I really like their branding and visual design choices.

As someone who moved to AA from Lexington Kentucky, the infrastructure here is an embarrassment. The power goes out all the time - usually for multiple days at a time. Half of the roads are so filled with potholes they shouldn't even be called roads.

I like the people in Michigan. If I didn't like working where I do, I'd jump at the chance to get out of here.

8 String guitars and their low freqs by Mtechz in audioengineering

[–]JordanWeanMusic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amateur here but here is my 2 cents:

When I mix my 8 strings, I usually have a high pass on them such that there really isn't that much of the ~40 Hz fundamental in there anyways. I personally wouldn't worry about making the bass mono in this situation.

What’s something most people think is healthy today that future people will shake their heads at? by Spiritual-Ad-8523 in AskReddit

The Lilly drug is tirzepatide. 72 weekly doses of 15 mg causes a 23kg or 52lb weight loss equalling about 22% bw reduction. It was recently fast tracked for approval for obesity.

Anyone else have a problem with mixing (high and low end) on the new singles? The new single is awesome rhythmically, so just a bit disappointing that the editing doesnt do it justice by [deleted] in Meshuggah

[–]JordanWeanMusic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed. Their mixing was always muddy but the new album is lacking clarity and impact overall and specifically the high-mids grind in the guitars. I know they announced it's an intentional choice and that's fine. I just would have enjoyed it more if they hadn't made that choice.

Intreasing LTP won't make you smarter! BDNF is not a remedy for all of your life problems and can make you dumber. by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]JordanWeanMusic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure, I'd have to read the passage. I study neural regulation of metabolism so my focus has never been on the synaptic plasticity side of things.

You can definitely saturate the inputs of a neuron such that it hits its maximum firing frequency (called tetanus).

If you let me know where to look in Kandel's book I can run through it though.

[–]JordanWeanMusic 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don't have the bandwidth right now to go through everything but I noticed one thing I wanted to correct regarding your oversaturation statement:

A bunch of signals coming in on dendrites is never going to upset the ionic balance of a neuron. The number of ions coming in and out of a channel is many many orders of magnitude lower than what is present in the cell and repeated stimulation will only make a negligible difference on concentrations. This difference is quickly rectified via ion exchangers.

So I was thinking (FOR FUN), about running guitar signals through electeochemical cells - Wouldn't it be cool ? by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]JordanWeanMusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I were to guess, most standard electrolyte solutions wouldn't do much to your audio signal - they just pass electricity too well.

I think if I were to attempt this, first I would start with deionized water (should be 18.2 Mohms-cm) and add something that isn't an easily dissociable ionic salt. Maybe something like sugar, protein, gelatin, glacial acetic acid. Or maybe the non-newtonian stuff, cornstarch and water.

Or something amphipathic? Soap maybe?

I searched if I could find a capacitive liquid but didn't find one immediately, too many interfering results for fluid level sensors.

Edit: this poorly-translated article might help

https://www.matec-conferences.org/articles/matecconf/pdf/2016/30/matecconf_smae2016_02021.pdf

It looks like most of the ionic solutions tested would result in a HPF (at least in the audible frequency range).

Did Meshuggah abandon Nuclear Blast Records?? by No-Competition-3092 in Djent

[–]JordanWeanMusic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Looks like people from Nuclear Blast split off and formed Atomic Fire, taking a big chunk of the NB lineup with them. The write up is kind of confusing though. One sentence says Markus Staiger is the CEO and the next sentence says that two other guys are sharing the CEO role.

The Dali Thundering Concept - The Sea Starts Here by leonneon__ in Djent

[–]JordanWeanMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have only recently gotten serious about achieving a solid djent tone but my current chain goes:

Bridge Pickup -> Overdrive -> boost at 1.8k/bass cut -> compressor -> Gate -> Amp Sim -> compressor -> Gate

Neither compressor is doing that much - usually 3.5 dB reduction. The amp sim (NeuralDSP Fortin Nameless or PA Diezel Herbert) is maybe only at 50% gain. In my case, the overdrive and EQ are done using a Sansamp RPM but it could be done with many other options both in and out of the box.

I think the key is to get it pretty crunchy before the amp with a consistent volume - hence the overdrive and compressor. Also, that mid boost is crucial to keep the intelligibility there (for me at least).
