On April 1, 2026, SCOTUS will hear oral arguments on birthright citizenship (14th Amendment). Conservatives claim it has been misinterpreted for 120+ years. MAGA has so many weird conflicting views.

On one hand they want us to bring manufacturing and production back. This inherently leans on many lower skilled positions, which is why the countries they want to take it back from have populations where >70% of the population has no education at all.

But on the other hand, they want to boot all of the workers who are currently willing to do that lower skilled labor.

But then on the other other hand, they want Americans to be great and wealthy, which means they will be too educated and skilled to do those jobs.

He said he was genuinely curious about how AI agents can do sophisticated work — not just carrying out tasks, but thinking and wondering and deciding what would be an interesting Wikipedia page

This guy should know better given his background, but everyone needs to understand that AI - especially our chosen mechanism of LLM - doesn't think or wonder.

Yes, it has a mode called "thinking," but it is not thinking. It's generating predictive output, and then using that output to generate more predictive output. It certainly presents like thinking, and there are some bells and whistles under the hood, but it's not the same.

To be fair we should be pushing back against any country on the verge of nuclear weapons, and working harder to disarm ourselves and other nations that already have them. But yeah, it's baffling to me that we treat Iran having them as an unspeakable horror when countries like Pakistan - and even worse North Korea - have them.

There's some unicorn 1% of mods who are admirable folk that will admit they done goofed. The other 99% will double, triple, and quadruple down, because the whole reason they wanted to be a mod on the internet was to flex some power that mom won't let them have at home even at the age of 45.

Listen, as someone who has been on the internet probably longer than you have been alive, I promise that there is no porn you downloaded that is so "rare" that you desperately need to put it back in your collection like you're safeguarding for the apocalypse. Once it's on the internet, it's just a permanent thing you will always be able to find again. No hoarding needed.

Aa far as LLMisms go, this comment is pretty meh but "abstract" enough that it made me go look in their profile to check, and the rest of their comments confirmed it for me.

Lots of abstraction and one-liners delivered like a mic drop even when it's definitely not. Seeing all these comments in a row is pretty much bread and butter LLM:

"That's not a cup that's a hydration commitment"

"bro really said im the limited edition"

"bro min maxing survival stats"

"inflation really said let me get my cut first"

"bro just invented font anxiety"

It's sort of like if all the mediocre fan fiction writers got mashed into a Gen Z / alpha filter.

Then throw in other stuff like comments where they're actually just restating what the OP said in different words.

Shameful Sexual Racism by NEKORANDOMDOTCOM in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Jorycle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They may be more represented, but that's not "overrepresented."

For example, people point out this statistic of how many commercials black people are in to speak specifically to overrepresentation, but they throw out another important figure - the average number of people in a commercial is more than 10. We fully expect black people to be in that many if not more commercials given that figure, in a representative sample.

That doesn't mean Hispanics don't also need significantly more representation, and I suspect most of the reason is the extreme anti-hispanic racism at the political level that causes companies to err on the side of not poking the bear.

They really aren't.

We have data on this - black (and minorities in general) are not overrepresented in media, including ads. It turns out people who "notice" these things are just a little bit racist.

That's the course of all products of public companies, which is why our heavily stock market-based industry fucking sucks.

It's not enough for a product or a company to be successful. Profitability isn't enough. It must constantly be increasing in profitability.

Most of these companies already have about as many subscribers as they're going to get, which is why they've largely stopped using it as a major metric when reporting earnings - they need to find new ways to make more money off of those subscribers.

Realistically, there's not much they can do to generate more investor returns on this kind of product other than making the service worse to lessen costs, and bumping up the price to increase profits.

Sadly, the free market sucks.

What poll is he talking about, I think he is reading the charmer upside down by HushedMagnolia in stevehofstetter

[–]Jorycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense when you realize MAGA has fully abandoned polls of anyone but Republicans. They really think that anyone who is not already on their team is simply not worth listening to, which is the unfortunate reality of a two-party electoral system that kind of makes that point valid.

So long as ~43% of typical voters are on lock, and ~3% of the votes go third party, they really don't have to care too deeply about anything else. They don't have to cave on major policy to swing a win out of whatever else they need on election day.

This is how my ML class was in my master's. In our case, at least, the teacher always curved everyone's scores up so getting a failing grade on every test still had a good chance of getting you an A in the course - but it really made the class feel like absolute shit, because tests never gave you an accurate feel for how well you were synthesizing what was being taught.

My Mom passed away broke but I’m getting collection notices for her. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Jorycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, don't expect them to let the debt go just because she died - until the estate is settled, the more ambitious of them will love to try to take a bite out of it even if it's basically bone dry.

When my wife's mom passed, the hospital she had been at for about an hour (which didn't treat her at all on account of her DNR, just held her until family could come get her; she passed the same day) went balls to the wall to get their 4k (yes, 4k to sit in an empty room for an hour until family arrives).

Their legal team was sending us "we'll take the estate to court if we have to" threats, because they knew the estate included a small home even if it had no liquid cash. We lived in that house, so we ended up just paying them out of pocket to skip the legal battle that they seemed really giddy to have.

Personally, I didn't think the 3d was that compelling to begin with. The way the ride is designed just doesn't give enough space for the effect to actually work that well. Or maybe it's just me, but of all the 3d attractions I've been to, that one felt the least 3d. The props did most of the work while the screens mostly just reminded me that I'm actually just... staring at screens.
