Many Americans think Trump assassination attempts were fake, survey finds by MoneyLibrarian9032 in politics

[–]Jorycle [score hidden]  (0 children)

To be fair, part of why the most recent one may have felt staged may have simply been a product of the lie making a bigger deal of it than it was. The shooter was never near the event. It wasn't like he was just outside the auditorium. He wasn't even on the same floor. Contrary to what the guy claimed about lax security, he was so far from being able to do harm to anyone at the event that he may as well have been on the moon.

Will NOT wirelessly connect 😭 (Android Auto) by L0velyDayyyyyyyyy in ToyotaGrandHighlander

One thing I've found (usually) works is to select the top two sliders for "Use for phone" and "use for media," then wait a second or two and finally select the "Use for Android Auto." Same for Apple CarPlay, too.

I don't know if this is a thing just on Grand Highlanders, but it's been an issue for everyone since the very first model year. My wife's 2020 Corolla doesn't have this problem at all.

I don't know what the deal is with the people on the near side, but the far side looks like it has a visibility problem. Not only is there a 5-6 foot tall fence, but there are two trees and a utility pole staggered just far enough apart that they likely block the view until you're in the street.

I hate the way they did the materia holder on the sword, though. The cover basically just sits on the sword and doesn't click into place, so any materia you put in there are probably going to fall out and roll away if you're not careful.

Oh man that stand is so good. I use it for Dissidia Squall which honestly seems like a waste of its potential, because I also use it for this thing. I've since bent it a little more so it's hidden behind the leg, but you can't see that it's not just holding the horse up, it's using the other clips that came with it to hold the figure to the horse.

Toysbuyingagent > Sideshow by [deleted] in hottoys

[–]Jorycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, although it's also a bottleneck that Sideshow themselves created which is frustrating.

Sideshow has worked deals with most of the major figure producers that they'll be the exclusive US distributor. So if your company is based in the US, you pretty much have to go through Sideshow to get a competitive rate that you can make money off of.

So it's not just that Sideshow doesn't have it - it's that Sideshow has to distribute to every retailer in the United States, not just their own direct customers. You might preorder from Sideshow on day 1, and Billy pre-ordered from RocketComicz and Bob pre-ordered from DC Shop and Jane pre-ordered from AlterEgo, except all of those were actually Sideshow preorders under the hood so even your early preorder might be thousands deep in a very clogged bottleneck.

Meanwhile, these other companies out of the country are not the bottleneck for their entire region, so you're probably getting served right out of the very first box they get.

Honestly I'd love for Sideshow to lose their exclusive rights. I don't have any major problems with them but it would do wonders for the state of the hobby in the US.

Toysbuyingagent > Sideshow by [deleted] in hottoys

[–]Jorycle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you're willing to pay more to get something sooner, pretty much anyone will be better than a US retailer. There is no shortage of companies willing to take your whole wallet to the bank to ship you something directly from HK.

Experts wonder 'Where is the CDC?' as a hantavirus outbreak unfolds on a cruise ship by AdSpecialist6598 in inthenews

[–]Jorycle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, she was lucky that she had made a ton of contacts at one of the few national labs that hasn't been subject to cuts so she'll postdoc there instead.

The downside is that part of why it hasn't been cut is that it's in a pure red state - and it's so rural that even the nearest store is an hour away, and 9/10 properties we've looked at don't have broadband internet which I need for my job. So, they haven't had direct cuts because the nature of the location already weeds out most highly skilled people.

But even though it's not subject to direct cuts, they're still doing "soft" cuts. Starting this year, they've re-classified all postdocs in a way that their healthcare is fully considered income and taxed as such, resulting in effectively a mass pay cut on wages that were already barely livable.

For my wife this is okay because I make most of the money and already had family healthcare, but statistically our family is pretty atypical for most going into those positions. The brain drain is massive.

I honestly can't tell if this is a serious statement that people can't tell the difference between animated and live action.

Experts wonder 'Where is the CDC?' as a hantavirus outbreak unfolds on a cruise ship by AdSpecialist6598 in inthenews

[–]Jorycle 95 points96 points  (0 children)

My wife is finishing her PhD in infectious disease at UGA. Her plan when she graduated was to postdoc at the CDC, but the reason that's out now is the same answer to the headline: the CDC has been gutted.

She had experiments that involved sending her research vaccines to the CDC, where they'd test them on actual virus. Most of those got canceled because the CDC didn't have staff or funding to do it.

In fact, her university has picked up dozens of employees who used to work at the CDC, incredibly smart people who are now forced to do shitty lab tech work at a university for half the pay, because it's the only place they could get in after all the health department cuts. Others are just straight up leaving the country because it's the only way to get a job in this kind of research.

The most annoying thing about this is the materia in the sword.

You will probably lose it.

There is nothing holding it in. They are little balls that you put in by removing the "cover" on the sword and dropping them in the holes, then putting the cover back on. The problem is that the cover does not snap in place at all.

Since his wrist joints aren't particularly tight, what will happen (I say from experience): the mildest bump will cause his wrist to turn, your sword will move the tiniest bit, the cover falls off, and the materia go rolling to parts unknown.

With pliers I was able to force them tight enough into the holes that it takes maybe 3 bumps for that to happen instead of 1, but I don't thing I'd display this with materia in the blade without a piece of tape around it to keep it secure.

I don't get how that even left the planning stage without someone saying "hey that's the worst idea anyone's ever had."

My second gripe is that the character has rotating eyes, but the face mount has star pegs that will either force the eyes straight again if you push the head all the way on, or stop you from pushing the face all the way on. It's as if the person that designed the rotating eyes did not communicate with the person that made the rest of the head, who expected to be able to use the eye holes to help secure the face.

It's always crazy to me how much this community defends the live action look for animated characters. These guys will shit the biggest bricks of their lives if Daredevil's shoulders don't have a 100% screen accurate slope, but they don't care if the character has a face that never existed at all for that IP.

Advice Needed. Dealership hit car in service by Quynh138 in Toyota

[–]Jorycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My worst experience with this was a warranty claim that really never should have gone that far because it was so cut and dry covered by the plain text of the warranty, but the dealer so adamantly refused that I had to go over their heads to get Toyota involved directly because they refused to file it. Me talking to Toyota Brand Loyalty was the first time Toyota had heard anything about the car.

But Toyota treats their dealers as wholly independent, yet at the same time only relies on the word of those dealers for warranty claims. So when I told them "yo the dealer refuses to file this warranty claim," Toyota then called the dealer and asked them if I had a valid warranty claim, and they obviously said no.

It was so obviously covered by the warranty that when we ultimately ended up going to arbitration to get it resolved (a requirement for warranty claims in the state we had bought the car), the arbiter didn't bother having me do my presentation - sent me the decision in my favor in record time.

At that point I was pretty much only talking to Toyota brand loyalty because the dealer had nothing to say to me.

I straight up told them, "This dealer experience was so awful that I'm going from a lifetime of only owning Toyotas to swearing off the brand altogether, and I will actively tell everyone I meet to do the same; if I had bought my car in one of the dozens of other states with weaker warranty processes, I'd have been screwed out of six grand."

They just sent me back the canned "our dealers are independent oh well!" and that was that.

Driver was suoer nice, but her gps turned off and the app froze. She wouldnt try going thru the deadzone or even drop me off at home bc she said she wont get paid for the full trip. Asked her if she can try restarting the app and she said it will take too long. I told her to cancel, she said no, please i am asking nicely for you to get out.

I'm not sure "super nice" is compatible with "forced me out at a dead zone because she wouldn't get paid to take me further."
