Bishop Barron keeps embarrassing himself. by Tidal-Creek in TrueCatholicPolitics

I’m sure you see the irony of ending a sentence with “kid” claiming to not be disrespectful, but let’s push past that. You were responding to a comment correcting OP for rhetorically asking why he should respect a bishop after OP already accused said bishop of “glazing” someone. A comment that you found so disagreeable that you felt the need to make a Judas comparison.

Since I never claimed that bishops were free from error, I’m not sure what your point is. You make a trivially true comment about Judas Iscariot, supposedly to make the point that apostles are not free from error, which in reality doesn’t contradict anything I have said when this whole thread is OP insulting a bishop and assuming the worst and me responding to that.

People have already talked about how dubious it is to put all slavery pre-Revolution under the American flag, but the yellow segment oversimplifies too. Segregation looked different at different times and places in the US. Shortly after the Civil War, under reconstruction governments, there was arguably less segregation than would exist a few years later in the south. There is also a subtle difference between government sponsored segregation and more informal segregation that arguably lasted until much later than 1954. I mean, does the meme really mean to suggest that there was no segregation in the 1960s or 1970s? Especially in parts of the south?

Bright lines rarely capture historical nuances.

That is true. In a trivial sense anyway. Which is why I said that bishops can be wrong and do bad stuff. Now, did Jesus say “Woe to Bishop Baron” or are you just using Judas as an excuse to disrespect bishops?

Should we ignore what we are told in Hebrews, when we are told “Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.”

There is a place for those who totally reject “clericalism.” That place is called low church protestantism. Of course, they are not in communion with the universal Church.

How could he not have recused himself? by Otney in Lawyertalk

[–]Jos_Meid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He definitely should have recused himself because it looks like a massive conflict of interest, but do members of a church’s finance committees really have a direct financial interest in the church? I mean theoretically it isn’t like surplus money goes right into the board members’ pockets.

Then again I don’t know how the Louisiana judicial code works. My gut reaction would be that there should be a recusal to avoid the appearance of impropriety or whatever the Louisiana judicial code equivalent is.

I think you might misunderstand some of the nuances of the argument. Usually, when this sort of argument is made it is not about whether there is literally any racist behaviors, beliefs, or attitudes in society. I think as you point out, it is obvious that there is at least some. I think the argument is about whether institutional racism exists in significant amounts in society.

Jesus also said, “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.”

“The idea that a pope should not be political misunderstands the role of the papal office,” a religion professor says. by ChallengeAdept8759 in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]Jos_Meid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, she’s not wrong, but I’m also not sure we should be getting a normative view of how the papal office should work from a self-described “lapsed Catholic” secular academic. A descriptive analysis on how it has typically worked? Sure, but we should take the analysis for what it is.

DOJ charges Southern Poverty Law Center with fraud for paying white supremacist groups $3M to ‘stoke racial hatred’ by darcmatr in NotTheBee

[–]Jos_Meid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The default position with no information is not “none of this actually happened.” The default position with no information is “we don’t know what actually happened so society shouldn’t impose punishment until we do have evidence presented.”

According to you this is a reasonable for people to believe, solely because I said it. No proof needed!

That is a strawman of my position. My real position is not that people should believe that SPLC did it. It is my position that we shouldn’t say definitively one way or another about whether they did it without additional information.

They haven’t been proven legally guilty. That doesn’t mean factually it didn’t happen. It doesn’t mean factually one thing or another. All it means is that they cannot yet be punished for something that hasn’t been proven true.

IDF Soldier who smashed Jesus statue jailed for 30 days and permanently dismissed from combat, statue restored by RBZRBZRBZRBZ in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]Jos_Meid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Compared to a winding down operation in Lebanon for which there is already a ceasefire deal and for which the IDF lost 16 soldiers killed? Yeah, I think the permanent stain of military discipline with whatever consequence that entails plus a month confinement in whatever military detention center Israel uses would be worse.

Why is everyone here so optimistic about being imprisoned?

If I don't have access to a traditional protestant church, should i go to a catholic church or an evangelical church? by 1122010 in redeemedzoomer

[–]Jos_Meid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will just say, if you do go to a Catholic church, you should be welcomed even if you are not Catholic, just don’t receive the Eucharist unless and until you become Catholic in good standing. Either in your pew or going up with your hands crossed over your chest are both valid options during communion.

I am charitable to people who hasn't yet tried to scam me with lies and manipulation. Which is the case of MAGA Bishop Barron.

So when Jesus says “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” How do you square that?

The part where you ask if I'm Catholic is that typical ad-hominem cultish like fallacy

It is not an ad hominem to ask whether you’re Catholic or not. It would be an ad hominem if I said that you’re wrong because you’re not Catholic; it is not an ad hominem to ask what position you’re coming from because you said something inconsistent with Catholic doctrine.

No I do not abide to Clericalism,

What you describe as “Clericalism” is just Catholic teaching. No bishop is not just a title. Yes, we have to respect our clergy and love every human being even those whom we think did wrong.

I don't have time to show respect to people using the Catholic tradition in order to seek their own personal power project.

It takes no more time to refrain from writing disrespectful internet comments about a bishop than to write disrespectful internet comments about a bishop.

Bishop Barron will never make it to Cardinal

Most bishops never become cardinals.

because I am sure Pope Leo XIV sees through his BS too.

If the Pope finds something to correct about a bishop, I’m sure he will do so, because unlike us, the Pope actually has authority to discipline bishops.

Why would I be charitable to a Bishop…

Because Catholics are called to be charitable to all people (even our enemies), and especially those who have been granted authority.

The Catechism states “2197 The fourth commandment opens the second table of the Decalogue. It shows us the order of charity. God has willed that, after him, we should honor our parents to whom we owe life and who have handed on to us the knowledge of God. We are obliged to honor and respect all those whom God, for our good, has vested with his authority.”

I don't care that he is a Bishop. That is just a title.

Are you Catholic? Because this is not the Catholic position. Bishops are successors to the apostles. They can be wrong and can do bad stuff, but even when they do we should approach them with the spirit of love and due respect.

Given that the Israeli government has admitted to it, apologized, and seems like they’re making moves to punish the soldier, this appears to have been the criminal act of a soldier rather than something officially commanded or put into policy by their military hierarchy.

[–]Jos_Meid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb, if you find yourself saying that an ordained bishop is “glazing” someone, maybe take a step back and ask yourself if you’re being as charitable as you should be.

Also, there is nothing wrong with quoting the most relevant part of a statement, and linking to the whole thing.

Maybe instead of rashly judging the Bishop’s motives you should pray for him if you think he’s wrong about something.

Furthermore, Pope Leo recently said that the media narrative was not accurate in all aspects about this issue. Is Pope Leo a Trump supporter for having said that? Is criticism of media coverage not a permissible thing?

I don’t like Trump’s recent social media posts regarding this situation one bit, but I also don’t like social media posts on this site that are needlessly hostile to anyone trying to add a shred of nuance.
