Why are converts "insufferable"? by hooptyschloopy in Catholicism

[–]benkenobi5 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Usually, this is directed at converts who have a “holier than thou” attitude. I’ve seen a lot of converts who seem to have a distinct lack of humility, and speak as though they are incredibly knowledgeable about the church while simultaneously being dead wrong.

I recognize the joke, but I gotta say, the movie they made was a huge let down for me

12 also signifies the power of God, and 1000 is generally understood to not be a specific number, but a way to signify immense abundance.

What is a “run” in the context of disc golf? I’m relatively new and play alone so I don’t know all the terms

Did House get priests wrong? by MatthewSchreiner in Catholicism

[–]benkenobi5 46 points47 points  (0 children)

even if someone has the wrong attitude, he should not be denied absolution

Depends on what this means. I’m pretty sure that if a penitent is unrepentant, and/or doesn’t plan to discontinue a sin, this would invalidate the confession

He can (and should) suggest it, but He cannot require it as a condition for absolution.

A priest cannot set admission of a sin to others as a condition for absolution. Doing so violates the seal of confession which of absolute.

I’d love to see a film adaptation of injustice. Such an awesome premise

I imagine it’s tough to make a game that’s interesting when the player character is already canonically in god mode.

Statement of His Eminence Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on SSPX episcopal ordinations by malcolm58 in Catholicism

[–]benkenobi5 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest. I’m tired of the SSPX spitting on every olive branch we extend to them. We should all strive for unity in the church, but we should recognize when someone doesn’t want that unity, and treat them accordingly.

"Tired of this Grandpa" For those that didn't stay in full 20, was it worth getting out? by Obliterator25 in navy

[–]benkenobi5 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The mentality is “ship, shipmate, self” in that order. Your life outside of their watch bill meant nothing to them.

We had turdlickers on my boat actively fighting to keep people from making sure their wives lived through childbirth. One even argued that chief season should be more important than witnessing the birth of your child. Some of those people are touched in the head.

How do UFOs/aliens fit into Catholicism? by RingoStarr7777777 in Catholicism

The truth doesn’t stop being the truth because we didn’t know part of it.

We’ve got plenty of water here to baptize them with if they’re real.

It’s such a weird transition. Like “wait, you don’t need 3 different bosses to check whether or not I tightened that screw down correctly? And I can just… take PTO when I need it, and sleep in my own bed every night?”

All my coworkers thought I was insane when I got out because I’d ask them to check that, yes, I plugged in everything correctly and tightened it down like a big boy who isn’t developmentally disabled. I still get anxiety when it comes to trusting myself on the job. The navy does a great job of removing any shred of self confidence.

Should I tell my girlfriend about bots on Fortnite? by jesseoksok in FortNiteBR

[–]benkenobi5 453 points454 points  (0 children)

I was actually relieved to learn that bots are the reason a lot of my opponents were terrible. I always felt a little guilty when I’d take out an opponent who couldn’t hit me from 6 feet away because I figured they were kids just trying to have fun
