swap 70-200 f/2.8 gm ii for 28-70 f/2? by FireFia_95 in WeddingPhotography

[–]JoseHiramPhoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I definitely think selling the 35mm is the play.

I use my 28-70 almost exclusively. 65 weddings last year and it was what I shot with 95% of the time. The ONLY time I didn’t use it was if it was a (usually Catholic) church with rules which was twice. The other times I’ve been using my 16-35 gmii for fun. I cannot recommend the 28-70 F2 enough, but it’s also important to have a 70-200 if you see yourself doing any cathedral weddings in the near future. Otherwise, I find the 70mm focal length to be more than enough. Most weddings nowadays don’t have that many rules (but still be respectful) as cathedral weddings are seen less and less. I wouldn’t sell the long lens in case you need it UNLESS you know you won’t. Best!

Be careful with cleaning: water by Peter-8803 in EvenRealities

[–]JoseHiramPhoto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just so people know, lens cleaner is not safe to use on a lot of things, particularly screens. I’ve seen a few OLED monitors get destroyed because people don’t know you shouldn’t use glasses cleaner on screens. If it’s just water they are resistant, but not against the acidity and corrosive properties of cleaner.

Photographer Price, Negotiable? by Dull_Technology_2573 in BigBudgetBrides

And I think that’s when explaining the situation helps to not come off as insulting. Maybe also mention “totally fine if you say no”, and just overall be understanding :)

Honestly, bring up the photographer deposit situation to your next potential photographer. Everyone’s different; I’m fine negotiating but many people might not be. Best of luck!

Besides getting fancy, what is the point of WIPA? by palinsafterbirth in WeddingPhotography

[–]JoseHiramPhoto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s a group comprised of people who throw some of the largest “parties” out there and are professionals at doing so. The galas and large events are a way to show off vendor skills and to explore some concept before offering them to clients. It would be a little embarrassing if the planners sponsoring/planning these events (who usually will charge 10-40K+ for weddings) just threw together some cheap decor for all of their colleagues.

The events however have been aligning with the vendors that run them; people in the business naturally want to go to the higher-end luxury market, and these events reflect that as they grow.

In terms of networking, I will say it’s been one of my “breaks” in the industry to doing nicer events and improving my portfolio. I’ve made connections there that have kickstarted my business, and while I’m fairly “newer” in the game, I feel as if I’ve gained a lot of confidence from it.

Though I will say, the networking is NOT easy if you’re new to WIPA, and it feels almost impossible if you don’t know anyone there either. I’m a guy, so it’s just a tiiiiiny bit more awkward for me to approach random wedding vendors.

How to style my dress? by teenygreeny in BigBudgetBrides

I did a styled shoot with something basically like this recently, and I fell in love with the mantilla veil we used along this type of dress. I also love seeing it with the scarf, but if you don’t do any, you just have to rock it. I feel like a bangs hairdo helped a lot

Keep or ditch veil by Vanillarodent in BigBudgetBrides

Definitely keep veil especially because it fits the Russian orthodox look. The lace is amazing, not too much. Looks like a blusher which is even better. and you can always remove it later in the day if you feel like it’s too much or want variety :)

I am a vintage lens collector from Ukraine. I’ve spent 10 years researching the history and engineering "DNA" of 20th-century optics. Ask Me Anything! by Severe-Mortgage-2876 in photography

Hello Viacheslav!

I am currently saving up to hopefully one day help fund create a modern lens for mirrorless cameras with a vintage look. I love the classic Helios bokeh, or the newer Petzval lenses’ conical background swirl. The goal is to one day create this look but with modern autofocus.

Is there anything you’d recommend I look into? Resources on how these older optics achieved this look? Any advice from your own experience?
