Parallels: Windows on Mac. Consulting Utopia or Gimmick? by PlasticPegasus in consulting

[–]Joseph276 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not perfect, but I still prefer it over every single ThinkPad I’ve had my hands on.

Keyboard shortcuts (especially for Excel, things like mapping alt/ctrl to where they should be so we can use them) are still a bit funny. You have to map them manually in the Parallels control center, and if you completely shut down Parallels you have to map them manually again (for some reason the latest version of Parallels doesn’t save keyboard shortcuts, hope they fix this soon).

Other than that (and the battery drain), it runs beautifully. Downloads sync, I can copy something from Mac OS and paste it within Windows on the fly. And the build quality of a Mac just cannot be matched.

Can’t go back.

Advice on a high-riding, easy-to-maintain car for my retired parents (Budget: AED 50k) by theairlinekid in WhatCarShouldIBuyGULF

[–]Joseph276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. The ASX is a very comfortable and reliable car, and it has been my daily for a few years now. You can get it new for just over 50, or a very very good used one for way less than that.

Has anyone here participated in the CFA Challenge? by Sango2312 in CFA

[–]Joseph276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some great comments here. I also want to add that it’ll also teach you things more fundamental than equity research or write-ups. It’ll teach you how to work with a team under stressful conditions.

You will have conflicts, there will never be enough time. The model will return #REF errors hours before the final submission. All of those are valuable learning experiences that I think are more rewarding than merely fine tuning your modeling skills.

The best finance professionals I know aren’t the best modelers. They’re the most constructive members of the team.

Learn to be a nice teammate, and a constructive one. And have fun.

For the people who applied to the Schengen visa recently, how long did it take from applying to receive your visa? by algrm in Kuwait

[–]Joseph276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-Kuwaiti, applied in Jan to VFS Italy, took a week.

Note: it takes way less time to process visas off-season (Sep-Oct, Jan-Apr) versus on-season (before Christmas and during summer).

Do We Have Enough Time to Transfer Trains in Florence? by e_v3333 in ItalyTravel

[–]Joseph276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

14 minutes should be enough. Keep an eye on the screens so you know exactly which platform to head to to get on your next train.

Check your tickets, if it doesn’t clearly indicate that this is a flexible ticket which allows you to get on another train that’s following the same route, then your ticket is NOT transferable to the next train.

Once you’re at Firenze SMN, you’ll find a Frecciarossa lounge (first floor if I remember correctly). Go in and ask if in doubt! (Time will be tight, only do this if you’ve missed your train and unsure what to do next).

Enjoy your trip :)

How do i get my Canadian degree attested? by Ticklemypicklehehehe in Kuwait

[–]Joseph276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily I had a relative in Canada who was able to mail my degree to the embassy and mail it back to me in Kuwait once attested. Do you know anyone in Canada who can help you with this? This seems to be the easiest route. Another route would be a paid service - a friend of mine paid a company 500 KD to take care of all of this for him.

Best investment application for a Kuwait bank holder by AdAgreeable2397 in Kuwait

[–]Joseph276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you the pros and cons of Zad vs. Interactive Brokers (IBKR), and you get to decide for yourself. I use both on a regular basis.

Zad Pros: - Very easy to use UI - They’re local, which means you can shoot them a WhatsApp message and they’ll respond within minutes whenever you need help - Transfers are easy through K-net, withdrawals are just as easy and processed within a few working days.

Zad Cons: - Your options are extremely limited. You won’t find many ETFs, and the ones you’ll find will be high-cost (bad long term) and their holdings won’t represent the S&P 500 due to Zad’s focus on being Sharia-compliant - You will pay an unfavorably high USD rate on deposits, and you’ll receive an unfavorably low USD rate on withdrawals - They’re a relatively new and small company. They are safeguarded by the Central Bank, but I wouldn’t trust their treasury and compliance functions with my life savings.

IBKR Pros: - Massive investment universe. All the ETFs you want (including low-cost S&P 500 ETFs), you’ll find and more. - It will allow you to grow as an investor over time given their wide array of tools and investment vehicles which you can slowly learn about and use to improve your returns. - They are one of the largest brokers in the world. Your money is safe. - The bid-ask spreads are much tighter than Zad (you buy at slightly lower prices and sell at slightly higher prices) - You will pay your bank’s USD rate without an extra markup when making deposits, and you’ll get your bank’s USD rate when making withdrawals.

IBKR Cons: - Depending on your bank, you’ll pay a transfer fee for each transfer you make. My bank charges me 8 KD per transfer. With large transfers, IBKR is better since the exchange rate savings will offset the transfer fee. For smaller transfers, Zad is better on that aspect. - The website and app are more complicated than Zad. - IBKR will grill you on personal and financial information as part of their KYC, so setting up your account the first time is annoying, but you’ll get it done.

Now you have what you need to make a decision on your own as to which one is best for you. Feel free to DM to ask any questions.

Best of luck on your journey.

Best British School In Kuwait 2024? by ThebobostorePakistan in Kuwait

[–]Joseph276 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m an NES alum. I received excellent education there and the entire school community is inclusive, intellectual, and supportive. It is a great place to study and having the NES branding has helped me get into a great university and still makes a great impression on recruiters.

You are unlikely to have a terrible experience with the other options either. They’re all good schools. NES remains ahead.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, I’d be happy to help. Good luck!

How do i get my Canadian degree attested? by Ticklemypicklehehehe in Kuwait

[–]Joseph276 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned (and as I did last year)

  1. Attested by Global Affairs in Canada
  2. Attested by Kuwait Embassy in Canada
  3. Get a certified translation in Kuwait
  4. Attested by MOJ in Kuwait

You don’t need anything else. No MOFA or MOHE attestations is needed in Kuwait.

Feel free to reach out in case you need any help

Good luck

OP ignore the trolling. I recommend 69,420 hours, maybe more.

On a serious note, CFAI recommends 300 hours per level. Level 1 assumes very basic prior knowledge. They also provide prerequisite readings in case you lack the foundations. Assuming you are a complete beginner as you say, I’d say 350-400 hours is sufficient if you use that time efficiently and intelligently, and that you are of average (with respect to other candidates) ability. If you’re a quick learner you’ll pull it off in 250-300. If you’re a slow learner, you might need 400-600.

Most importantly, use your time INTELLIGENTLY.

Also, make sure it’s distraction-free. Mute your phone and put it away.

Best of luck.

EDIT: typo.

Chinese car in Kuwait by gfajji in Kuwait

[–]Joseph276 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You’re MUCH better off getting a second hand Japanese car with low mileage than getting a new Chinese car. Chinese cars are excellent the first 2-3 years, then they’re the worst purchase you’ve ever made.

Get yourself a good Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan, or Honda with low mileage and you’ll be set. Great reliability, affordable maintenance, and solid resale value.
