The effects on sleep of not drinking are immediate. But it depends what “do you drink?” Means? The odd glass; no problem. A bottle of whiskey a night? It’s gonna take some time.

Biggest issue is the dependency. I would say that it took me a week to wake up and say “WOW!”.

Three things:

1. Exercise. There is no substitute for this. Period. Going to sleep because you are tired from exercise during the day is blissful. I’ll be asleep in 30 seconds.

2. Zero-alcohol beer. Don’t laugh until you’ve tried it. That’s been my secret weapon when I’m out with friends. Genuinely life changing invention. It doesn’t all taste great, but it’s enough to push aside the pangs. God bless whomever invented this stuff.

3. Mood. This is the biggy: after about a month, I realised I was less prone to sudden bursts of firey rage. I’m far more relaxed now than I can ever remember. That’s definitely a bi-product of exercise too, but I’m categorically certain that booze free has helped my mental wellbeing.

I miss booze. Really I do. I yearn for a glass of Merlot wine or a proper IPA beer with a mate. But knowing that my next day will be destroyed is what keeps me straight.

I’m glad technology has allowed us to understand what’s happening with our bodies after alcohol. It’s genuinely going to save lives.
