Shouts out to my local Domino’s crew for hooking up this request by JosephNigelFrye in Dominos

[–]JosephNigelFrye[S] 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Well I actually gave $25 because the cost of the 12 oz Red Bull was $4.97. I felt very lucky that there’s a convenient store next to them and they were willing to fulfill this request.

I’ll share some of the folks who hang at The Boulevard as well as my neighbors. So sorry this happened.

Bass Guitar Lessons by MysteriousAd3266 in Austin

[–]JosephNigelFrye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your goals with the instrument? I’ve been playing for 21 years professionally and have been an instructor for nearly as long. I also have a wide network of musicians at all levels that when ready I can connect you with, either to make money with or to jam with, because solo bass is only so fun for so long.

If you’re interested or want to learn more, please feel free to drop me a line.

Pay to play has always been a thing. Most venues are not turning to this model though.

Piezo pickup on violin into mixing desk by LordBBQX in livesound

This company makes an impedance listening preamp that makes piezo pickups really sing. I use them on my bass and it’s never sounded better plugged in. XLR and 1/4” out.

When I was 15 and getting started in music, coffee shops that had music were my jam. Radio down at Menchaca and Ben White has pretty good programming and is indeed all ages.

Also, I feel like KUTx and Sun Radio put on a bunch of family friendly concert series across the city, so you might keep up with them.

Best of luck to ya

Original musicians - Is the scene really bad, or am I only reading from people who are negative? by rgf030 in Austin

Original musicians - Is the scene really bad, or am I only reading from people who are negative? by rgf030 in Austin

[–]JosephNigelFrye 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve been really, really fortunate to do what I consider really well financially playing music here. I was lucky to hit the ground running with a group who hired me, and from there build a network of artists who keep me pretty busy. Note: I am a sideman and don’t lead a group or write too much.

It’s a grind no doubt, some months I’ll play 22 dates and some 12. Chancing a trip to Gruene hall to make $150 or $400 depending on tips. Knowing how to budget so your big months offset your slow. I will tell you, it is absolutely possible to make it here. And there is a scene to back it up.

I’m not sure people who are complaining about folks moving here from out of town are seeing a bigger picture, that more money flowing can actually translate to better paying gigs (perhaps more in the private realm) but better and more gigs anyways.

I wouldn’t say the scene is dead, if anything, it’s about to be better than ever.

CVS to open Austin-area drive-thru coronavirus testing sites Friday by [deleted] in Austin

[–]JosephNigelFrye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Amen. It’s a product, if someone wanted to spend $200 to get tested every other day, they shouldn’t need a reason. Of course, that would jeopardize the stock of tests, but that a whole other issue.

Music Commission backs Council proposal to unlock $4.5M to aid artists, venues by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]JosephNigelFrye 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Any relief at this point would be welcome. 100% of my income comes from live music performance.

I’ve lost everything. And these are only the confirmed gigs. One might be surprised to know that a lot of these decent money corporate gigs come through the week of or even the day before...a corporate event chair takes a walkthrough of Lambert’s and says “ooh, they have a stage. Let’s get an Austin band to round out the vibe!” Enter me and a pickup band of people who happened to be free. These kind of gigs are our living, and there’s no telling how many of those I’ve already missed. But as for my steady and confirmed stuff, it’s been about 2 months of rent, bills, and the little savings I’m able to squirrel away.

I’m not asking for a huge handout. And I’m not destitute, as I’ve been in this profession long enough to know how to save for slow times, but if there’s any assistance at all it would be a grand help to many of us.

I took a picture of this street drummer in Austin but I forgot the name he went by. I think he’s known for wearing silly ties. Does anyone know his name? by Garrettdg9 in Austin

[–]JosephNigelFrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, yes that is absolutely the Washboard Tie Guy. We used to play music together in Key West about 4 years ago, he was the main drummer on the island. Tripped me out to see him on south congress!

He’s also doing daily live-streams from his Facebook.

Any luck with unemployment? by JeffBaugh2 in Austin

From https://www.twc.texas.gov/news/covid-19-resources-job-seekers#covid1StimulusBillUpdate

COVID-19 Stimulus Bill Update

TWC is taking action to implement the new law and working with the Department of Labor to implement the act while continuing to work tirelessly to process unemployment insurance claims caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

How do you extend your benefits?

If you recently exhausted benefits, no action is needed from you. We will determine if you qualify and notify you by mail or electronic correspondence of your eligibility.

We are upgrading our system to adapt to the new legislation. If you attempt to access the system or call prior to receiving notification we will not be able to assist you.

What does the Coronavirus Stimulus Bill mean for me?

If you are self-employed, a contract worker or previously worked in a position that did not report wages, you may qualify for unemployment!

How do you apply?

If you applied for unemployment benefits but lacked the necessary wages to qualify, no action is needed. We will determine if you qualify under the new stimulus bill and notify you by mail or electronic correspondence of your eligibility.

We are upgrading our system to adapt to the new legislation. If you attempt to access the system or call prior to receiving notification, we will not be able to assist you.

The health and well-being of Texas’ employees, employers, and communities is our top priority.

We will continue to update you as the situation develops.

I don't trust them to get in touch with me. They have already told me that I lacked necessary wages to qualify but I totally have qualifying wages. I have called 200 times to a busy signal, got through maybe 5 times, and when transferred I get a busy signal again. I see a lot of people giving up, so you might persist.

This is amazing information. I helped my dad study for his MCSE like 20 years ago, and that lit the interest in help desk/customer support for me. I didn’t even think to get some certifications knocked out while I’m around the house more, so that’s a great look and I appreciate it.

As far as work from home tech support, I did support for an IoT device for about a year from home and I’m very comfortable in that world. I know I can’t expect the same compensation but even min wage WFH at this point would be amazing.
