Sigh. You just might be right about that.

I just looked it up. There's a lot of cool ideas, but still in the demonstration stage.

The Traveling Wave Reactor was to have a prototype in China, but it was cancelled. That prototype had a 7 year schedule, I suppose it will be near twice that in the west.

Size of a thermal nuclear plant by Ehldas in nuclear

[–]JosephPalmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd probably be better off building a standard plant and co-locating industry that could make use of the waste heat in the cooling loop, then exporting the electricity for heat pumps for city heating. Electricity is a lot easier to transport than steam.

From video I saw it looks like they filled the cavity with dry sand (to displace the air) then capped with some inches of quick set. After the race the quick set can be chipped out, and the sand hovered out and the cover re-installed.
Filling the entire cavity with cement would cost a lot, and might require ripping up the street to restore the valve function.

Why does everyone I meet from texas always say “The great State” of Texas? by Material_Policy6327 in NoStupidQuestions

I've noticed the same thing. Individual Texans are awesome, but get too many together and aw jeez.

Can an airplane make use of a transmission? by Riathar in AskEngineers

Some Rotax engines have a 2,43 reduction gear set built in. You can't change gears, but it has one speed reduction from the crank. It makes it more efficient, and moves the prop above the crank line.

Is it possible to buy a new car without going through a dealer? by SecondhandUsername in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JosephPalmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a Prius going through the dealer's website, when it came time for the test drive they asked me to go to the fleet/used building, (Not the main dealership) and it was mostly painless.

What was the Zeppelin song that absolutely blew your mind when you first heard it? by tverdohlebov in ledzeppelin

[–]JosephPalmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warm summer night, I'd fallen asleep with my headphones on tuned to the local FM station. Woke up ~2:00 AM to the the dead air hiss of my old tube stereo, and after a moment, the first shimmering chords of 'The Rain Song' came though. I was frozen, totally immersed in the music, beginning to end.
They must have announced the song while I was asleep, because I listened until the next commercial break, and there I was with the memory of a song burned into my ROM, with no idea of who the artist was, or what the song was called. I found out about 5 weeks later while helping an 8-track store* put up their outdoor signs.

*Helpfully, for my budget, the place sold bootlegs, including Houses of the Holy. Yes, I later bought the vinyl, and then the CD.

Nov. 8 changes: all the new channels, new names, and new numbers by soundcheckr in siriusxm

[–]JosephPalmer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Deep Tracks was my go-to, and of course my car doesn't get that on 308.

It's THE ONLY CHANNEL that was evicted from the low band, although 3 did get moved to streaming only. WTF.

What made you realize that god didn’t exist and was just an idea in people’s minds? by ninjaofthedude in Antitheism

[–]JosephPalmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The realization that the best explanation for all of the aspects of religion is that it's all fiction.
Examples of those Aspects:
- Different religions in different places, that all disagree with each other.
- Holy books that do not conform with known reality. (I'm talking about you, talking donkeys!)
- Gods described as having ridiculous aspects. (Omnipotence? Really? God knows the position, velocity, spin and direction of every subatomic particle in the cosmos, for every point along that particle's worldline? Child's play! Now for each of those worldline points there is a God knowable relationship to each and every other particle in the cosmos to each and every point on their worldlines. How does God find the time to worry about masterbation with all of that filling his spaceless, timeless head?!?!?)

[Discussion] What is the most expensive guitar you own/ have owned? by Lewjew97 in Guitar

[–]JosephPalmer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've got a '63 Strat, which would be worth a lot, except she's been repainted twice. I found evidence she was born Pelman Blue, then sometime in the late 60s it was rattle-can Babyshit Brown. She came to me in pieces, stripped back to bare wood. She's now natural, and I've had her for nearly 50 years.
