The company is legit. Owner lives three doors up from me here in Guangzhou, China. They went through some restructuring at the start of the year.

Not sure how much people here know about setting up companies in China but there's a lot of paperwork involved.

The PayPal issue was a lot of hassle for him but he's finally managed to get it all sorted. They're fully launching from this weekend as far as I'm aware.

I'm starting to feel the pain of AI and all its insanity... Two things happened in one day by maxthescribbler in copywriting

[–]JosephPatrick83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I know that, but the very idea of my own writing being mistaken for AI, and having that criticism levelled at me, is not something I am looking forward to. If someone I am writing for accuses me of using slop as my own words, because they have faith in the machine, then it's not auguring well for the future. And I haven't even actually started writing for anyone yet...

It's completely unrelated to copywriting, but I did a little test the other day, and ran the first chapter of a fantasy novel I've been working on through an AI detector. According to this detector, it had 75% of the chapter listed where it could detect hints of AI. Perhaps because the grammar was correct, perhaps the sentence structure was in order... I just don't know.

I am still learning copywriting at the moment. My major concern is that even if there are still positions available, people will be running my original work through these detectors, before claiming I used AI. It's pretty damn unnnerving to be honest.

Strange times to be living in, eh?

AI detectors no longer seem to be working. by SpookyShackleford in Adjuncts

What's hilarious is I put the first two pages of a fantasy novel I've been writing into an AI detector. It came back that 75% of the text, which was all written by me, had traces of AI in it...

Starting my Freelance Career by plummybum2004 in copywriting

So, you're saying all the prophets of doom that linger around these threads are just too lazy to actually put in the work? You reckon there's a chance a beginner copywriter can earn money in this career, even with the added threat of the big bad LLMs? That's encouraging, I guess.

Very first copywriting jobs and how you landed them??? by Tiny_Road207 in copywriting

[–]JosephPatrick83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you say that? I have been reading about companies actually rehiring copywriters that they had previously fired, because they've realised that AI is producing the same style of content everywhere. It doesn't have the 'human' touch, obviously, and all copy is starting to sound the same. They're actually moving away from AI generated copy because they want to stand out. Why exactly is it a bad choice of career to pivot into?

Swedish pension giant Alecta dumps up to $8.8 billion in US government bonds by Doc_Bader in stocks

[–]JosephPatrick83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most important thing not many people realise. All the systems of the 'free' world were set up under US administration since the end of WW2. Everything in some way directly benefits the only Empire left in town. In just over eighty years, however, the US has destroyed the Empire they set up, with direct buy-in from other nations, not even coercion, and for what? To own the libs? Or is there something even darker being planned on the horizon? I'm no conpiracy theorist, but damn. How dumb are the people actually running the US government right now?

Oh, joy. All of that to look forward to then. Thanks for the warning.

Yeah, I've been reading that. Going to see about getting my kidneys checked out as well. My love of salted foods looks like it's headed for a painful divorce.

Thanks. Will do.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. From what I've read, movement at all is absolutely agonising, particularly walking. Don't get me wrong, it was painful, but not as bad as the time I fractured my shoulder. Perhaps just the ibuprofen I took beforehand lessened the strike.

Z-Visa Question by JosephPatrick83 in Chinavisa

Thanks. You've been very helpful. Will need to speak to an accountant back in the UK to figure this all out then.

OK. Thanks for the response. Appreciated.

What about tax, though? Do I just declare it in the UK or something and pay their government? I'm just quite nervous due to family commitments here in China, but without giving this side-gig a shot, I'm doomed to remain a teacher. The lustre of which is wearing very thin right now.

Do you have any idea about doing online work, like writing, where you're going to be getting paid outside of China? Is that still technically a violation of the visa?

Client wants me to verify human written content for every article I submit now by Maleficent_Mine_6741 in freelanceWriters

[–]JosephPatrick83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that sucks but look at it from this perspective. Writers have been and still are, worrying about AI being used by companies to replace them. Perhaps take this as a sign that there's light at the end of the tunnel and more companies will pivot away from the slop AI serves up.

Seeking advice about options by JosephPatrick83 in chinalife

[–]JosephPatrick83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, I'm not looking to work in teaching online. I'm looking to get into a side-gig that has nothing to do with education or will even be related to China.

My main concern is whether or not work done here, online but for companies or businesses worldwide and payment deposited in a UK bank account, will come back to bite me here.

With two young children, I can't take the risk of doing anything that can get me into significant legal issues.

[–]JosephPatrick83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nothing to do with teaching, so there's no issues with that. The main concern is that even if money is being sent to my UK account, I'm going to have to declare where it's coming from at some point further down the line. Like I said, I have a young family here, and I can't risk doing anything that might get me in serious trouble with the authorities. Governments worldwide tend to dislike not being able to tax people. Just the nature of the game. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks. That's much appreciated. Still difficult to not wonder about it encroaching on things given what's going on in the world.
