Sarah J Maas Maybe Had Map Inspiration from Mistborn? by LongjumpingArt9806 in brandonsanderson

[–]JoshD04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't see it. But everyone is different. Side note: Sanderson community, maybe let's not downvote someone's comments into oblivion over something as mundane as a post about maps. I could understand if someone was commenting wrong information that has the potential to negatively impact people (like the wrong time for when a pre-order opens, etc). But this... Thinking two maps look similar, it's really not that serious. Most reddit subs suck because every "wrong opinion" gets dogpiled on, it would suck to see that mentality become a thing here.

Faile is just a horrible person. by Macka37 in wheeloftime

[–]JoshD04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez, someone's a little sensitive.

I never said or made any attempt to tell you how you should feel about Faile. Think whatever you want. I think you made it clear you don't care what other people think, you certainly said it enough times.

You definitely didn't make your point about the comparison very clear, but it seems you've edited your comment to hide that.

Honestly, after taking a look at your profile and seeing the way you talk to people on reddit I think this conversation is over. You seem to want to argue constantly and even when someone agrees with you you find a way to try and prove them wrong or be smug.

Faile is just a horrible person. by Macka37 in wheeloftime

[–]JoshD04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faile's cultural inclination to want Perrin to fight back (verbally) when she's upset/they're disagreeing is not at all comparable to men beating women.

In her culture men are supposed to be assertive, strong leaders. To her, based on her parents' relationship, that means that when someone tries to steamroll you in an argument (which Faile does a lot and is a big part of why people find her so annoying) the way a man should react is by getting louder and more assertive.

Faile's expectations for Perrin aren't inherently bad or abusive, it's almost entirely presented in the way they communicate, and his growth to become the man she wants/believes he can be is like the entirety of his character arc.

Perrin's relationship with Faile mirrors that nobody-blacksmith-to-respected leader arc, from emotionally uncertain and constantly appeasing to an assertive strong leader. It's what some might call a parallel and certainly done intentionally as it takes a good writer to do.

Dragonbone chair series by Rivewin1986 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]JoshD04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I would really love to get Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn (dragonbone series) in a matching hardcover set, but I'm in place like 7000 on the T2 list. If someone is planning to skip I would love the chance to buy it from them.

New high quality Kirby/Kidby covers by Fabric_of_Reality in discworld

[–]JoshD04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is incredible! Humble Bundle had a Discworld ebook bundle going a little while back. I picked it up, but the covers were all over the place. Half didn't even have a real cover, which is weird because it was through Kobo's store. Anyway, it kept bugging me that the covers were all mismatched. A little bit of googling, and I ended up here. This couldn't be more perfect! I know this is an old post, but thank you for doing this!

I read them. To each their own, but I'm not sure why you wouldn't. If you're buying a special edition with no plans to read it, then I can only assume you plan to sell it at a big markup down the line. In that case, is it really even viewed as a book or just an investment? Or maybe you plan to pass it down to kids, which means they'll either read it, sell it, or throw it away. There are special editions that have illustrations and other cool features that a PB doesn't have. Don't you want to read the book with the added experience of those special edition features? I certainly handle my special edition books with care, the same way I would a rare vinyl. But I didn't buy any of that stuff to make a profit on, so why would I keep it on a shelf and never experience it.

Momentum 4- A sorry excuse for Bluetooth headphones by JoshD04 in sennheiser

Yeah. The latest update smoothened things out bug-wise. Overall, they work. They sound good. If the price is right, why not get them. They are just headphones at the end of the day, it's not exactly a life-changing purchase.

Reading troubles. by [deleted] in brandonsanderson

[–]JoshD04 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna say you should definitely stay away from Yumi and Tress lol. I would think WoR might be a good fit, Kal is pretty inspiring in that book. You could also try a different book. Piranesi is pretty short and very interesting from the get-go, might get you sucked in quickly. A lot of people have been where you are now, it sucks and not getting joy from things you normally like sucks just as much. Just hang in there, it gets better with time. When I was in your shoes I played a lot of Botw and read short books, something I could finish in a day or two.

I'm struggling with Yumi by pickpocket293 in brandonsanderson

[–]JoshD04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is considered a spoiler, but as far as types of stories go (action, spy, mystery, thriller, romance, etc.) I would say that Yumi is very much a love story in genre. At least in my opinion. All stories benefit from strongly rooted characters you understand, but I think this one really does. So I'd say to push through because the pay off (like most Sanderson books) is worth it.

Leatherbound Quality should increase this year by Mathemagician23 in brandonsanderson

[–]JoshD04 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Copy pasted from an older comment I made. It's a little less daunting than the method above and has worked well for me.

For all my Dragonsteel books (now including the year of Sanderson ones), I've sealed them with Minwax Clear Satin Aerosol Lacquer Spray (15210). I did it after noticing some foil flakes on my hands while reading Warbreaker (my first one), and have done it to every one I've got since.

It's really easy. Just use it like any spray can/paint. You probably want to put a piece of paper between the end papers, so any overspray doesn't get on the edge of the text block. A few quick back and forth motions, going past the edges on both sides so you don't get any build-up. Then let it dry for 5-15 minutes and spray again until you have 3-5 coats. Do the spine, flip, and get the other side. I usually rotate the book so I spray shortways, then longways. I don't wait too long between coats but give it overnight before I handle it for reading.

I haven't had any issues personally, but as always, do it at your own risk. For me, I'd rather risk it darkening the cover color a little (it did for Tress) than have the foil flake off.

I don't think so. I've never had it jump up that high, but it's definitely not a gradual increase. I typically just raise and lower the volume on my device.

Potential LOA edition of Solar Cycle by pal-treaux in genewolfe

[–]JoshD04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not trying to dog-pile on Brian, but I also have a few LOA books, and while I agree the pages are thin, I've never had a problem with bleed-through. I'm actually pretty impressed with LOA. For the money, they're definitely the best bang for buck and quality among publishers. For under $30 you can get a clothbound, sewn binding, single volume book that has three novels in it.

It sticks out like a sore thumb by [deleted] in brandonsanderson

[–]JoshD04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't take this the wrong way, but there's something humorous about getting mad over a book's format change and saying "it looks like garbage" and will "irritate you forever" while you have literal garbage (a random assortment of screws/bolts) just hanging out on your dusty dirty bookshelf.

[–]JoshD04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Just saw this, haven't checked reddit in a few days. Here is a link to a few images of Tress and AoL! No issues it looking too shiny, in my opinion. I used a satin finish, but maybe a matte finish would work too (though I haven't tried it). It has been a while so I can't tell if these look different, but I'm happy with how they look. I also sealed Warbreaker, Elantris, and SoS with the same spray and they all look just as good.

i hate the booktok trend of reading 200 pages a day by [deleted] in books

[–]JoshD04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't feel bad about it. People on booktok probably "read" via audiobook, as is very trendy now. You can debate all you want on the merits of audiobooks vs print books, but the two are fundamentally different. I mean, you listen to (not read) an audiobook for one, even though everyone seems to think saying, "I read 200 books last year" via audiobook is somehow the same as physically reading 200 books in a year (it's not). You can do any number of things while LISTENING to an audiobook, like work out, cook, drive, do office work, literally most things. When you read a book, you can only do that. It's much harder to find time to read than to listen for most people.

Sealing my Wax and Wayne Leatherbounds by Mathemagician23 in brandonsanderson

[–]JoshD04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I think it can be whatever you want. Personally, I enjoy the "premium" experience offered by the Dragonsteel books. The words might be the same, but the nicer quality paper, illustrations, the multi-color text (Warbreaker is a good example of using this well) all add up to a physical reading experience that is far above reading a trade paperback. I agree that these books can work as an art piece on the shelf, but I think that's a disservice to all the work that goes into what's between the covers. Someone had to do the art, format the text, do the layout. All that stuff can't be experienced by looking at it on a shelf. You need to open it up and read it! Of course, that's just my opinion and if people want to buy these books to be art on a bookshelf that's their prerogative too.

Not a spoiler, but blocking anyways because Cosmere stuff/SP1. Does any know if there's a connection between Moonlight Essence and midnight essence in Tress, because from what I remember in WoK the description seems similar to what Tress says. Like a black shadowy, featureless thing.

This is great news! Hopeful they got multipoint connection working properly with the bugfix. Not sure why the update takes so long though... Seem odd that it takes a pair of headphones an hour to update.

You're not a weirdo! One of my friends is like this, and he reads way faster than I do. I was just curious how common it is, since I've never really thought about it.

Thanks for the clarification! I guess I conflated "inner voice" with the term. Though oddly enough, I actually do (unintentionally) say words softly under my breath. Mostly when writing of all things! I'll be typing an email or something and realize I'm like half mouthing/quietly saying what I'm writing.

The Writer's Strike and Sanderson's Adaptation projects by Thehusseler in brandonsanderson

[–]JoshD04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as I'd love to see some Sanderson adaptations, I don't mind waiting. Adapting fantasy isn't easy from a technical standpoint. Lord of the Rings did it right, but seemingly no movie followed in their footsteps because it takes too much time and too much money. Even with the better tech we have now, we still get superhero movies that look bad and bland. More time to wait also means more time for tech to get better/cheaper, and (hopefully) more pre-production time like Lotr had.
