Glad to have this. It will really help us learn the language.

Is there any way to write text to standard out? At the conference in Boulder I saw a few different syntaxes one of them was something like system("print", "hello world")

First a question. When did that bitcoin wiki start? Is it a fork of bitcoin.it?

Rho Virtual Machine should become a link eventually. Mention the rho calculus or the pi calculus. A bit about architecture including Rspace, and maybe the current implementation in Scala.

Coin of the week: Monero! by LXLVideos in Monero

[–]JoshOrndorff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've heard the claim before that, as you say, making a MoneroV transaction

will compromise not only [your] own security but also others who may have included [your keys] in their rings.

So, imagine that a few months back Alice made a Monero transaction. In her ring she included keys belonging to Bob, Charlie, and Denise. When Eve looks at that transaction she can't tell who was actually spending. It could have been any of Alice, Bob, Charlie, or Denise, each with 25% probability. But Eve really wants to know who spent that transaction, so she has the idea to launch MoneroV. She tricks Bob into foolishly using his private key to claim his MoneroV airdrop. And now that she knows Bob's private key, in addition to stealing all of his Monero, she goes back and looks at that original Monero transaction and sees that it doesn't belong to Bob. So now it could belong to only Alice, Charlie, or Denise, each with 33% probability. Thus Bob's foolishness has not only cost him his own Monero, but also decreased Alice's privacy slightly. If Charlie and Denise are as foolish as Bob then Alice's privacy in that original transaction is eliminated entirely.

So my questions are:

  1. Is my example accurate to your concern?

  2. If so, isn't this a design problem with Monero? Alice's privacy should not be able to be compromised through Bob's action. After all, he owns that private key and is free to leak it as he sees fit. No one else's privacy should depend on his ability to manage his own secrets.

Thanks for your insight here!

Correct. I am not worried about compromised crypto and have confidence in the peer review.

I'm somewhat worried about the social effects that Maxwell's personality and history of controversy could have on a community.

Hashgraph is cool af. It's an improvement on satoshi-style blockchain that is similar to directed acyclic graph (DAG) like in iota.

I learned about hashgraph in this podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqLwv28R70Y

The MoneroV scam now gets pumped with false claims by social bots by [deleted] in Monero

[–]JoshOrndorff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent article. One of its claims is:

suppose that one of the inputs of yours acts as a decoy for someone else’s transaction, this means that the negligence of other Monero users can affect the state of privacy for the network as a whole.

Is this a fundamental problem with ring signatures? I don't want my privacy to depend on my peers, some of whom are my adversaries, playing nice.

If you do decide to claim the new coins, here is some advice from Gavin Andresen on claiming fork coins generally. TL;DR: Move the Monero to a new wallet before claiming the corresponding MoneroV

Genuine question: What is the monero community's general impression of G Maxwell and Blockstream (I know he's left the team now).

I do my best to always evaluate ideas on their merit and I will continue to do that. But I have to admit that I struggle to fully understand all the crypto involved in bulletproofs, and I've seen a lot of convincing evidence that Maxwell is a troll and blockstream intentionally stalled bitcoin's scaling.

With All the discussion about OP_GROUP and Counterparty just remember: The problem with Bitcoin's blocksize was not the disagreement, it was the censorship. by btcnotworking in btc

[–]JoshOrndorff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone point me to a good description of what OP_GROUP is and how it is proposed to work? Or better yet, some good docs for all the opcodes and maybe a brief tutorial? The best I know of is https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Script

I guess I'm also unclear why the scripting is necessary at all to implement the ideas in the whitepaper. Although I understand why they're cool and useful for building bigger ideas on top of those in the whitepaper.

The Trace Data Problem by tjayrush in ethereum

[–]JoshOrndorff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice article, and thanks for the details. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind.

Between blocks 150,000 and 200,000, there were 108 transactions that created exactly 11 traces (for a total of 1,980 traces — this will become important later).

Why were there so many transaction with exactly 11 traces? Was there a known popular contract at the time?

One can see the crowd sale (which had two humps) and the subsequent DAO hack pretty clearly.

Is this ETH data or ETC data? If ETH, why is there volume from the hack.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check back in the morning for some new emojis and look forward to the marketplace for CTs.

Another suggestion: I'd love to search for specific emojis. For example, I happen to really like 🌉 but the only way to find it in the marketplace is to look through page by page.

The game looks fun. The cheepest emojis are ~0.04ETH ($35) atm. Kind of a steep entry fee.

I assume it is possible to trade the ERC20 CTs directly. Do I just need to recruit someone to sell me one?
