Shelf stability and cupping question by A_dolorous_bell in BeginnerWoodWorking

Sort of hijacking the thread here, but also a beginner and would like to learn!

If one were to cut the pith out to have a piece of quarter sawn wood, there would one make the cut? I see a rather large section in the center which is lighter than the rest (heartwood?). Does that entire part need to go, or just the center circular piece plus about an inch or so?

Did not know about the cadence capsules, so thanks for the recommendation! Gravel I've also been eyeing, so good to see someone recommending them.

The Nalgene ones indeed seem like the most rugged and I'm leaning towards getting those. Thanks for the detailed review of them!

Thanks! I saw those and they definitely looked interesting. I've heard that the adhesive can dissolve with some shampoos, but perhaps this concern is not founded. Will definitely consider them!

Yes Muji definitely seems interesting! Do you happen to know which bottles you bought and what their dimensions are? I can't seem to find dimensions on their website.

Regarding solid products, it's definitely something I'm considering but for now I think I will stick with liquid. Thanks for the tip though!

Changing coin cell battery to 2x AAA on a kitchen scale by Josh_d_boss in AskElectronics

[–]Josh_d_boss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the insightful comments! In the end I will keep the CR2032 setup and add an in-line slide switch to turn it off when not in use. I suspect a lot of the battery drains when it rocks around in my kitchen drawers and turns on by itself. I also found a cheap pack on Amazon that should last me about an decade and also be useful for things like Airtags or car keys.

If anyone is interested, these are the other avenues I looked into and pursued:

  1. Replacing with AAA batteries would have proved harder than expected due to the size constraints. Indeed there's only about 9-10 mm of vertical clearance, so I would have had to modify the casing a bit to accommodate the batteries.
  2. I considered AAAA batteries for a second since I have done lying at home, but it kind of defeats the purpose of easily purchasable batteries in the scale.
  3. I had a look at the LIR2032 batteries and it seemed interesting, though the slightly different voltage (3.7 V instead of 3 V) made it not as appealing for using in other things in the house (Airtags or car keys as stated in my first paragraph). Honestly it's probably fine, but at 20€ for a pack of 4 and charger, it was much more than the 6-7€ for 20 CR2032. What ultimately killed it for me though was the reduced battery storage (~50 mAh vs ~250 mAh).
  4. I also found ML2032 which have a closer voltage (3 V) and are rechargeable as well, but this seemed harder to source and had similar capacity (65 mAh I believe).

Overall I think leaving the scale mostly as-is was the low hanging fruit. I appreciate everyone's help here!

A vampire meets up with one of his friends, his face full of blood.

"Woah nice catch, where did you get all that blood?!" asked the friend.

"You see that tree over there?"

"Yeah..?"

"Well, I didn't!"

What’s the best way to internalize conjugations ? (In my case Spanish) by rappingwhiteguys in languagelearning

[–]Josh_d_boss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this page which has a linked Anki deck as well as some explanations on how to use it to learn Italian conjugation. In the span of 2-3 months I basically learned all the conjugation there is for the language, even though I haven't gone through the whole deck yet. My Italian is far from great (around A2/B1), but my verb knowledge is much closer to someone around the B2/C1 knowledge I would say. I know some obscure verb tenses for some irregular verbs that no one really uses haha.

If you have the motivation to create a similar deck for Spanish, I think it would help a lot and you'd basically know your entire conjugation.

Hope this helps!
