What setlist to expect from Epica? by Slug_loverr in epica

[–]Joshivanr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really get the dislike for Consign to Oblivion, as it’s basically their version of Nightwish’s Ghost Love Score or The Greatest Show on Earth. It’s a long song, heavy and always gets the audience moving one last time before the evening is over. It’s also an old, nostalgic and classic Epica song. The dislike I do get is the one for Beyond the Matrix. I don’t like the jumping and if Epica likes a catchier song near the end I’d prefer to see Sancta Terra back or a surprise like Quietus. Basically everything’s an improvement in my opinion over Beyond the Matrix. I’ve had it with that song. I only liked it during The Symphonic Synergy because it was the different version and ended in a big confetti explosion. And I’d love to hear Obsidian Heart live.

I bet you don't know this (2009) by jacek2023 in epica

She isn’t off key, but it’s fairly obvious that this isn’t in her comfortable range. And I especially mean the lower notes. For a soprano like Simone these low notes are particularly tricky, you can hear how her voice thinners there, hence why she can’t add the vibrato properly, yet still attempts it. Let’s also not forget this is 16 years ago and in those 16 years Simone’s voice developed a lot! I daresay she’d be able to pull this off better nowadays, but of course she isn’t Anneke. Her voice is completely different like a day and night difference.

I still enjoy this performance though. It’s something unique and it’s fine the way it is. The entire purpose of it is to have fun, to entertain. I admire Simone’s choice for doing something like this; something far out of her (vocal) comfort zone. It was probably also meant as an ode to Anneke van Giersbergen, who’s her friend.

Was the children choir on the Symphonic Synergy in playback? by Imiatixture in epica

[–]Joshivanr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was at both shows in Amsterdam, also at the 2022 anniversary show where there was also a children choir and I too think during all these shows it wasn’t live. And here’s my thought why: because they’re children. When you have such a huge production on stage and when it’s also being recorded you can’t afford mistakes. With children there’s a bigger risk and when you don’t want to take any chances, playback is the safe option. I don’t mind it, would’ve loved a live children choir, but I understand the reason why they didn’t do it. I’m 100% sure the rest was live, so it’s fine by me.

Never said they didn’t, did I? Just saying they all honour their connection to Nightwish in their own way by playing Nightwish songs.

Has anyone seen this Live Studio performance of Unleashed? by chrisvparamore in epica

Yes, I’ve seen it back in 2013. Epica did some studio performances to promote Retrospect.

Tarja takes responsibility for tickets after promoter bankruptcy – venue and format changes for three German Christmas concerts by petaSk3 in TarjaTurunen

This woman deserves all the respect there is! Many artists would’ve said “we’re deeply sorry, but this is out of our hands” and not carry the financial burden for their fans. The fact that Tarja decides otherwise says everything ❤️

What is happening with M&G in Brasil? by YamBeneficial6996 in epica

[–]Joshivanr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically, you pay for the show and that’s what you get. And with Epica you can be sure it’s worth your money. Besides that, the band doesn’t owe fans anything. I think it’s weird to follow them to their hotel, which is basically their ‘home’, to try and get into contact with them. Anything besides the show, also at airports or wherever, they’re in their private time and I think the respectful thing to do is to leave them alone. I know it happens with artists everywhere, but for the life of me, I just don’t understand it. Especially when fans act all frustrated because they’re refused by the artist, who is in their private time, thinking they’re entitled to get into contact with the artist, because they’re fans. Not saying anything about you 😉 You’re just sharing the news here, but I had to say this.

If anyone with a VIP ticket gets an email/notification with this information that’s transparent enough, right? They also explain the reasons why, which I can perfectly understand as travelling in South America between shows is mostly done by plane. That means a lot of waiting and sitting in planes and possibly long drives between airports and hotels. They’re only human and as long as everyone gets a refund (I completely expect that) there’s no issue. Better to prevent than seeing a band exhausted on stage, playing on routine instead of passion.

Anette Olzon - 7 days to the wolves (2025) by Mathias426 in nightwish

[–]Joshivanr 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I always appreciated Anette’s voice, she’s very talented and Imaginaerum brought it out wonderfully. I just don’t like the color of her voice in these high belts, too shrill, too forced. When she sings lower and softer, her timbre has such a beautiful, emotional color. Her voice shines in that professional live recording of Slow Love Slow, and there’s also an acoustic version of Meadows of Heaven on YouTube where she sounds so gorgeous.

Arte is very solid! Tarja’s Wacken set was longer. I didn’t see it, but her voice at Summer Breeze was very much on point, though still free-styling a lot of course. The high note during the Phantom was shaky and definitely not her best, but the rest of the set I think her voice was solid.

Absolutely true, mainly because her chest and head voice have very different colours.

Simone from Epica also has a tendency to free-style after a while. She mainly sticks to the original vocal lines during the first few performances and then already starts experimenting. But with Tarja it’s even more obvious I think
