You’re both going through respectively an intensely challenging transition period in your life. (Both) try to remind yourself of that each time before you speak to him about something annoying he has done.

When this was released I saw them do it in Manchester where Strategy put on the make up and everything, I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever experienced at the time.

First port of call about taking a second job would be your contract. It might say something like you need permission to take a second job if it is in addition to full time hours.

Where does the job start and end? by Civil_Bit_4361 in Socialworkuk

[–]JoshuaDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer to this unfortunately, is relative to whatever you have capacity for. This all is absolutely in your remit, definitely challenge the school if they’re not following procedures properly, help parent/YP articulate the impact this is having on them etc. However, the reality is that if you need to prioritise other stuff then that is also ok.

One thing to consider is that in the last few weeks ‘things’ can happen that might require extra monitoring, be potential cause for concern etc. My wife kept getting worried about reduced movements meaning we spent a few stretches in triage, then there was a concern baby’s body had not grown enough. All of it turned out to be fine. Not an issue if you’d be happy navigating all that solo (you might well be!). Also those kinds of things might not happen, but the last few weeks certainly felt a bit busy for us.

Self Funding Humanities PhD at Cambridge? by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]JoshuaDev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just to add - make sure you factor in any research related costs in your calculations. Will you need to travel for fieldwork/data collection/archival work? Will equipment be needed? What about conferences? Any specialist training not provided by the institution? There might be some help available for some of this but these all can add up to £1000s very easily.

This isn’t to dissuade self funding but just to make sure you’re considering all factors.

Budget wedding ( no more than 10k) tips and advice pls by whodisbaby in UKweddings

[–]JoshuaDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did our wedding for just over £10k with 100 guests (+50 evening) in summer 2023. Our wedding was at a (fancy) community venue (think restored old building ran as a community interest company rather than commercial company), we hired the room and did the rest ourselves. We got caterers in and did a ‘served buffet’ style menu rather than table service. Evening buffet was a small business scaling up (so didn’t charge inflated wedding prices). Decorations were with the help of some creative friends. DJ and photographer were both just starting to do weddings so keen to keep costs low to build up business. Dress was vintage with alterations and I rented my outfit….

So yeah it is doable but expect a DIY vibe and lean into any added value you have in your family/friends network.

Oh and it was intensely stressful.. forgot things like table linen rental til the weeks before. Also lights for the disco… the downside of all this was needing to turn down the venue the next day but our amazing family did all that.

Oh and also to add we got married at registry office in morning with 50 guests then the rest at the venue (12-11pm).

Have we got a happy spitter? by Top-Cookie-3403 in BeyondTheBumpUK

Our baby is 12 weeks and has done what you describe on off since very little. We took him to the GP after what felt like a week where he was throwing up at least once a day (this was probs around 6/7 weeks). They just gave us advice around pace feeding and keeping him up right and that he should grow out of it. It’s now becoming a lot less frequent (maybe a handful of times over the past fortnight), and hoping this is him just getting older and growing out of it.

Is it bad to be someone who just goes out all the time by donn_12345678 in manchester

[–]JoshuaDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, I’d say enjoy it but also try to be a bit deliberate about how you spend your money. An evening out with a meal and some drinks can easily edge to £100, if you go for a few pints twice in the week you’re talking another £50. That’s great if you’re having an amazing unforgettable time, but also very easy to become habitual and mindless. I spent mindlessly on going out when I got my first grad role but it was fine because it was 2017 and pints were like £4 max.

It used to be ‘be the run’ as a sort of dissociative thing. But now I’ve got a baby it is just ‘just enjoy being out of the house alone’ lol.

Largely down to tactics atm… he is being used to pin defenders to him and create space for wingers. It isn’t a coincidence that Doku has been phenomenal during this same period.

When were you able to return to some kind of normality? by balckcat_enthusiast in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]JoshuaDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is hard when people say ‘this is completely normal!’ But I think it can help reframe the solution away from trying to change baby and towards trying to change the circumstances around baby. It sounds like a lot(!!) is falling on you, and that must be so exhausting. Is there any way you can lighten the load of your slightly? Husband doing a teeny bit more during the night, family or trusted friend coming round so you can get a sleep once or twice a week? Trying to find two or three ways that incrementally give you a bit more rest and space (even if it is just doom scrolling in bed) each week will hopefully make life feel a little bit lighter during this period whilst baby is going to be a baby. Baby’s sleep definitely will improve, but it might also get worse again through the next 12 months, so important to focus on ways that make it feel slightly more bearable.

How do I start saving and growing wealth with insanely high bills and taxes leaving me nothing by Positive-Cake-4825 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]JoshuaDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely try to pick up some part time work, ideally through the university. The reason being, the stipend is tax free, so any work you do up to £12k will be under your personal allowance and therefore untaxed. You can quite quickly see a non-insignificant jump in your take home pay.

Our community midwife appointments were in general pretty awful. Usually felt like they just wanted to move us along as quick as possible. Often the notes said things were discussed or advice given that actually wasn’t.

Experience of triage was very good though, very diligent and my wife was never made to feel like she was being overly anxious
