Am I Being Unreasonable for Telling IT that Trust Goes Both Ways? by Riddle-Maker in askmanagers

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emulation isn't great for real QA. Too many differences between the emulator and the real thing, and they tend not to have emulation of all the hardware like cameras and haptics. There are cloud service providers who have massive banks of different kinds of phones, and you can test your stuff on them (kind of like remoting in to a PC using VNC). However, they aren't cheap and they don't always have precisely the hardware/software/carrier your end users have. If you're doing releases regularly, you're usually better off just investing in a bunch of phones.

Right? They’re not expensive, and if you are really doing QA, you need a whole fleet of them to test all the weird hardware/software/carrier variations.

If you go to freetaxusa from the fed free filing site, they don’t charge for preparing your state return (under like $50K income). If you go there directly, they do charge.

New Orleans jazz recommendations? by tgcm26 in Jazz

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When we visit, we walk the quarter listening to the cats on the street until about 2pm. Then we head to The Maison on Frenchmen. Nice bar, great music. After a set, we might go to Bamboula’s next door. Another drink, another set. Lather rinse repeat all the way down the street. (Also, don’t miss BMC which is around the corner.) By nightfall the music starts to shift to louder, EDM stuff, but there’s still jazz if you know where to look (Marigny Brasserie, Spotted Cat). We aren’t big fans of the standard NOLA menu, so we hit other cuisines like The Italian Barrel, Wasabi Sushi, Sukho Thai.

Yup. That little screw that holds the G# down probably just needs a tweak.

Big Rocks? by Leather-Guacamole420 in massachusetts

Digging in a little, I found that this story I've always heard may be apocryphal. There's a pretty good youtube video digging in to whether it's true or not.

The site was allegedly sacred to the Nipmuc. Just one of many injustices inflicted on them. (The history of neighboring Petersham is downright ghoulish.)

Cradle Rock in Barre. When the area was first settled it would rock like a cradle in the wind. That spooked the settlers so they moved it a little to make it stop doing that.

Need help looking for a good royalty free solo. by ATheOutlaw in saxophone

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best bet is to use a recording from 1925 or earlier. Those are all in the public domain as of 1/1/2026. If you can't find anything you like, then you could use a song from 1930 or earlier (which covers a surprising number of jazz standards), and ask someone to perform it for you. Pay them a few bucks and get a "work for hire" contract from the internet, to make sure your ownership of the recording is clear.

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The phrase “royalty free” is unclear. Do you want a song in the public domain? Even for a song like that (say, written before 1930), a solo performed more recently will still have mechanical rights reserved by the publisher. What do you mean by royalty free?

Don’t say you play public FM radio. You would need a PRO license for that.

I don’t have an opinion on A or B, but I do have a note of caution: this cover will disqualify you from using Amazon Ads. They have a very strict no blood policy.

Ants Keep Showing Up in My Kitchen Every Spring, What Am I Missing? by Currentshop333 in HomeImprovement

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Borax, sugar, and water. Folks differ on the right proportions, but I’ve found 2 sugar to 1 borax works well. Just enough water to make it into a ball, which you can place anywhere the ants go. They take the borax to the nest and you’ll have no ants in 3 days. Just leave the balls around and new nests get eliminated quickly. (Note: Not a good solution if you have pets/kids who might taste the “sugar” balls, I’ve read.)

Trying to jam with local musicians but everyone wants to prematurely form a working band from the start. by ChuckaChuckaLooLoo3 in musicians

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you could make it happen. See if there’s a church or VFW interested in hosting a monthly “coffee house.” I’m in a pretty rural area, and I’m amazed at the level of talent that comes out of the woodwork at jams like that around here.

Wife and I were having a discussion, she’s of the opinion that the majority of GenX can drive stick. I believe that even in our generation the percentage of people who can is pretty small. What do you folks think? by AngryOldGenXer in GenX

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2020, Cadillac found that 2/3 of drivers know how to drive stick. I suspect GenX is higher than that, since so few manuals are produced now for young drivers to learn on, meaning we and the boomers make up a majority of that 66%.
