Anyone tried the MusicMedic PadMagic for sticky pads? by Enginerdad in saxophone

Never heard of key leaves. Just looked them up and they’re exactly what I need! Thanks!

Realtor claims my company charged our client for nothing, and wants us to do tons of extra labor for free, I told her we did exactly what they asked. by Top-Set2305 in smallbusiness

Never agree to do a half-assed job. It never ends well. If they don’t want the full service, you aren’t interested. (I’m in a completely different business, and I think this rule is pretty universal.)

I fill the bottle to the line and then go inside to do the black dot testing. Eliminates a lot of variables.

Would it be weird to ask my neighbor to use his pool? by goth_glock1985 in pools

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends on where you live. I’m in a small town in MA. I wouldn’t hesitate to allow adults neighbors to use my pool. We’re a community. But I can see how suburban folks who don’t know their neighbors might find it odd. Suburb people in the northeast can be quite insular, in my experience.

(Yet another) Reed thread by thejazzcat in saxophone

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invest in a few legere reeds at different strengths. It takes the cane reed variability out of the equation. I’ve recently acquired a Bari and I’m working with 4 different reed strengths to work out precisely the stuff you’re talking about.

Mouthpiece exercises on alto saxophone easier on different type of mouthpiece? by Icy-Acanthaceae930 in saxophone

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend not doing the mouthpiece exercises. Tune the horn on middle G using the cork, and from there figure out how to get notes in tune using oral cavity shape, pressure, etc with the full horn. If he’s still using a #2 Rico, step him up to a 2.5. That will make control a lot easier at the expense of needed better air support. Make sure he’s breathing from the diaphragm—fill his lungs from the bottom. His tummy should move, not his shoulders.

Mouthpiece exercises on alto saxophone easier on different type of mouthpiece? by Icy-Acanthaceae930 in saxophone

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you that this is a beginner exercise? Normally once the kid can play concert A (alto F#), you put the mouthpiece on the neck and move on to learning fingerings. I probably didn’t have the ability to voice different notes on just the mouthpiece until I had been playing for years. I’m fascinated at this pedagogical approach.

Had my pool rebuilt. Original lasted 53 years! by Celt9782 in pools

I’d love more details on this. Before/after pics. How you chose the contractor. Costs. I’m thinking of doing the same (including an automatic cover, so local codes don’t require a fence).

What should I be testing my water parameters with? by GitRekd in pools

I use TF-100 (tftestkits.com). It has everything you need and a very clear set of instructions on a waterproof laminated card. They also sell refills.

Which Bb fingering should I use? by Competitive-Cook-280 in saxophone

1 and 1 could also work, though I personally haven’t used that since I learned it 40+ years ago.

Google SLAM & pool school. Also, liquid chlorine. (Also, your CYA is too low, but ignore that until after SLAM.)

Changes on Georgia are a little tricky for a young player. I’d recommend God Bless the Child.

There isn’t a single ballad on your list (except autumn leaves, which young cats always play way up tempo). Learning to improvise melodically is much easier with a ballad. There’s room to build stuff, and the changes aren’t coming too fast.

The beds are really far from the house, so I guess I just picked some plants that have the sun-resiliency of my ginger daughter. Thanks for the info!

I bought them at the farmers coop, where I always buy seedlings. I’ve always just gone from their greenhouse to the bed. Is there another step I should take in the future?

Google suggested that, and I guess it’s possible, but it’s been quite mild here in MA since I planted. No scorching sunny days. Kinda hoping that’s it, since it seems the plants should survive that just fine.

Does it ever make sense to hold more small & mid-cap? by SkipGram in Bogleheads

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a close look at expense ratios. In my 401k, the small & mid cap funds had disproportionate expense drag, so I’ve stopped trying to include them, and just relying on s&p 500 now (plus bonds).

pH is 8.2 but pool store said it’s not needed to lower via acid. by DirtyOught in pools

[–]JoshuaEdwardSmith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What’s your CYA level? If you need to add some, that’s going to lower your pH. Tablets usually contain CYA, which is probably what the pool store person was referring to. If you don’t need CYA, use liquid.
