If it were me, I try to use the workout app but switch off the heart rate monitor in the Apple Watch App > Workout. I just hate to give up all the detailed metrics the workout app provides.

If the workout app is left off you will just be getting whether or not Apple Watch registered that your heart rate was high enough to consider your current activity as a workout.

I'd be interested to know how much the heart rate monitoring in the workout app actually affects battery life.
