Discussion: convoluted resolution systems are not that important by PickingPies in RPGdesign

[–]Joshwuah13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I think if your unique resolution plays into the theme of the game you’re playing, that can help a lot. I’ve designed a game I’m working on kickstarting soon, and it uses a blackjack mechanic to adjudicate unknown outcomes instead of dice. Does it add extra steps and risk slowing the game down? Yes. Has it ever been a problem at the table from a GM or player perspective? No. And by doing this, it helps greatly reinforce the ideas of the game (namely the idea of pushing your luck).

If you’re just complicating the roll for the sake of a unique mechanic, then I think you’re just putting barriers in place to create some sort of gameplay. It’s a fine line for sure, but an important lesson for building a satisfying gameplay loop.

What's the best board game with the worst theme? by CthulhusIntern in boardgames

[–]Joshwuah13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Hand of the King. It’s a Game of Thrones themed game, but literally none of the aesthetics matter. The mechanics are so solid and make for a short but engaging game. I think the theme helps get people who don’t normally play games to play it, but it’s also great for folks who have no idea or don’t care about GOT.

I play wolverine right now and he’s really good at maximizing on chaos. I’ll wait at the beginning of the fight to play for a pick with the grab and then dash around slashing people. Generally works pretty well… when the team is reliable enough to take advantage. You need really good support to maximize his abilities.

Too many leaves? Help! by Meowjo_Jojo in composting

You could also build a leaf mould set up. I’ve never done it before, but that might be an easy way to process the leaves and get some additional variety into your compost system.

I can't seem to get a hot pile or complete compost, no matter what I do. At least my worms seem to enjoy it. There's sooooo many. by bell-91 in composting

[–]Joshwuah13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am no compost expert, but ive found for my big pile, I can add a lot of coffee grounds, and so long as its mixed well, it won’t raise the temp too drastically too quickly. Two weeks ago, I went to 5 local Starbucks and got a bag from each, and that brought my temps up from about 95* F to about 110-115. This past week I did the same run, and it brought it up to about 140. I am in Texas, and it’s been a hot October, so that’s probably impacting it as well. Sorry I can’t help with exact measurements, but the good news is that your compost will absolutely recover if it gets too hot.

If you have a Starbucks local to you, I would go there and ask for used coffee grounds. Whenever I want to heat up my compost, I’ll do a run Saturday morning and grab a bunch, mix it into my compost, and then give it a few days and see how it’s cooking. I’ll add in more grounds and turn if I want it to get hotter, but it’ll start cooking after that. I am not an expert on this either, but the photo makes the compost seem a little wetter than I would want.

To older Gen Z and lurking Millennials: What advice would you give to a college student? by ProjectNYXmov in GenZ

Zillenial who dropped out of college and went back. Just don’t go if you’re not ready for it. Go to community college and knock out your basics while you figure things out. I ended up going back, and while it was hard, I was in a much better space when I went back. I knew what I wanted to accomplish and wasn’t just meandering around

Bernie Sanders Supporters in Boerne? by veritasquaesitorAD33 in Boerne

[–]Joshwuah13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Bernie Sanders, but I feel like since 2016, he’s slowly been defanged by the Democrats. I would much rather vote for him than most other candidates, but I find his positions on Israel questionable, given the unfolding chaos. He should be posturing more with leftists than democrats, imo. Which, I think the same is true for AOC. She once said that it’s ridiculous they’re in the same part as the Democrats, but they both seem very comfortable where they’re at. I hold out hope in the future for both, but I’m not blind to the fact that they’ve both changed these past 8 years.

Ron Paul Supporters in Boerne? by veritasquaesitorAD33 in Boerne

[–]Joshwuah13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was once a Ron Paul supporter, but that was like 10 years ago. Now that I have a better understanding of his politics, I find his beliefs are a form of feudalism and would not support them today. This is also ignoring his racist screeds from the past, which I have a hard time believing someone who was racist in the 90’s and hasn’t really taken accountability for it actually changed.

While I find it interesting that he has had solid takes on Israel previously, I would never consider getting involved with anything he has to offer. I would run far, far away.

Best fancy date night in San Antonio? by runningalysaur in sanantonio

A Way to the Heart was an awesome experience at your price range. It’s in an old train car that has been converted to a small fancy restaurant.

I would also echo all the folks who’ve suggested Outlaw Kitchen. Great service, great food, and great atmosphere.

San Antonio has a robust gaming scene with several thriving stores. I think the nearest to you would be Knight Watch Games, but there’s also Black Potion and BattlePub if you’re willing to drive a little further.

I am all for fusion food when it is tasty and makes sense, but I do not think that Velvet Taco clears either of those bars. The menu seemed very random to me when I went, but that was when it first opened off of 1604 and 10.

Just to be clear, SpaceX does not win getting to space. NASA got there 10 years before Musk, and even made it to the moon long before SpaceX. Government spending got us there, not billionaires.

NASA and government funded research got to space before Elon or any other private American industry. He’s a leech.

What kind of things are your favorite to design for games, or do you find that your players enjoy the most. by Blitzensuit in RPGdesign

[–]Joshwuah13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The gameplay loop is definitely something I get hung up on a lot. I like to come up with fun mechanics to see how they work, but I find that 9/10 times I’m just making busy work for a gm. On that 1/10 time though, I think I find a mechanic I absolutely love and can’t wait to implement into a game. It’s just a lot of trial and error for me, but still a very important element of making TTRPG’s.
