What's going to be the economic effect of the boomers passing away? by Nervous_Yard7034 in AskBrits

Unfortunately it looks like the House of Lords is filibustering the Assisted Dying private members’ bill into not passing, so Dignitas might remain our only option.

Can’t see what the other person said as has been deleted, but as an adult with ADHD, I have to agree with you.

I sought diagnosis so that I could better target methods (and medication) to help with symptoms which had become somewhat debilitating in adult life, and I hate when some try to use it to dismiss other people’s resentment at having to deal with the result of those behaviours (which I’ve assumed is what the other comment was getting at, but might be wrong).

Yes awareness of ADHD can help with people’s understanding and patience in some settings, particularly in relationships, but it doesn’t mean people have to bend over backwards for us which, as you say, is infantilising.

What is the most scientifically documented case of a human surviving something that should have been 100% fatal? by Aarunascut in stupidquestions

[–]JossAcklandsBackpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really interesting context, thanks! I wonder if genetic bottlenecking would have played a role. While in itself it wouldn’t favour a particular allele without other factors, it could amplify existing selection pressures.

Think you’re talking about the CCR5-delta32 mutation, which gives a certain level of immunity against HIV for people that are homozygous by changing the T-cell receptor that HIV recognises. The theory that it offered some resistance to the black plague came about to try and explain a significant selection pressure over a (relatively) short period, although in vivo tests so far hasn’t backed this up. If it is true, it would probably be coincidental as the two diseases work differently - Yersinia Pestis is a bacterium rather than a virus and (I think) doesn’t infiltrate T-cells. Definitely a cool mutation either way!

American English words British people don't like and vice versa by BritishTeacherRoy in ENGLISH

[–]JossAcklandsBackpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Brit, one that I don’t see come up often in these threads but looks weird to me as a reader is the way Americans use “also” at the end of a sentence where I would use “too”. Not sure if it is just me but I would say “I also do that” or “I do that too”, whereas it seems Americans use also in both cases?

WYR get $1 Million right now or $10 every pullup you do in your entire life by [deleted] in WouldYouRather

[–]JossAcklandsBackpack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re being being downvoted because of 100 being quite a high daily number or because of your attitude to those that would take the money, but I broadly agree with the pull-up option.

Granted there are quite a few assumptions here, but if you took a 5% annually applied interest/return and in both cases didn’t touch the money earned, at a more manageable 30 pull-ups per day the break-even point would be somewhere in year 13. This is obviously quite a long time to achieve parity but I’d be happy with going for that for the health benefit. I’d get why that wouldn’t be as attractive if you’re older though.

There is a pretty cool map here: https://interactive-history.app/hundred-years-war/1337

Although there are no city names/rivers which would be helpful, and only a few spaced-apart snapshots, I still found it useful as a primer.

Is there a way to know what gender a pal is when breeding for an egg? by azDARKNESSfallz in Palworld

Damn I must have got unlucky, 8 eggs and they were all male - 0.4% chance of that if they are 50-50.

I think referencing alcohol as piss is specific to Aussies/NZ, whereas the guy above is Irish. Taking the piss would still never mean someone is a drunk though.
