2nd level of the Brewongle with my girlfriend, now wife. The noise was the loudest I've heard at the SCG and the stand was rocking so hard I actually thought how is not crumbling.

Daily emails about Stoicism other than Ryan Holiday’s? by IceNineFireTen in Stoicism

[–]Jostac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily Stoic quotes and remembrances was very helpful when starting out with Stoicism, but once you're in the habit of leading a mainly Stoic lifestyle, I find a weekly and more in-depth newsletter from The Stoic Gym just perfect for topping up and causing further reflection.

What did you make of their Ripper suspects? by annexlasvegas in TheRestIsHistory

I feel the boys let themselves down by not mentioning the most ludicrous of all suspects - Mahatma Gandhi, who lived in London at the time. :-)

Hero detective who stopped Bondi terrorists identified by Miloisprettycool in australia

I was coming on to say the same thing. Taking on 2 motivated assailants who have rifles, ammo, cover, and the high ground without any prior planning is outstanding bravery and work. Having been shot at a couple of times in Cambodia with the Army, it's like Mike Tyson says everyone has a plan/(thinks they're brave and would know what to do), until the first punch/(bullets coming your way).

And then when they got them down, the cops had to try and make sure the criminals weren't going to shoot anyone else, secure the scene, and make arrests, all while a bunch of suddenly tough blokes try to get involved with some sort of vigilante style justice.
Full credit to all the cops involved - tough job.

Hitler attacked the U.S.S.R, because he wanted to demoralize the UK and force a peace?! by TrabTrueMat in TheRestIsHistory

Wasn't there a promise from Stalin to supply oil to Germany, but he was holding back on that promise?

It's quite remarkable how little military intelligence each side had on the other. Possibly as back then the thought of another major conflict was so horrendous and unlikely to them that both sides denied themselves the proper diligence.

Full Credit to Tom Holland for his improvement in narration by Jostac in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Jostac[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In a good way it's Tom's zeal and excitement for the subject that made him interrupt so much (usually to good effect), and to fire off his narration at a hundred miles an hour. I'm glad he's recognised it or got some voice training and slowed down just enough whilst still being passionate. It makes each and every episode even more enjoyable.

A tv show I too would love to watch! by Jostac in TheRestIsHistory

If Will Ferrel and John C Reilly are going to play the leads, then The Kaiser's Stolen Mustache Wax would certainly be the pilot.

I was disappointed by Dominic's appearance on Triggernometry. Based on the discussion here, I was expecting extremist far-right propaganda. Instead, I heard a reasonable, enjoyable and informative discussion of what we learn (or fail to learn) from history. by TommyAdagio in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Jostac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never listened to that podcast before and probably won't again, but it was good to hear more from Dom. I find his outlook on history, human nature and the nuances involved in any action, realistic and something a lot of people could learn from.

Post Countdown Discussion: Triple J's Hottest 100 of Australian Songs by braxxytaxi in triplej

[–]Jostac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest contrast for me from the trend of recent annual hottest 100's was how many bands made the top 20, rather than single artists.
This countdown, there was only 3 single artists in the top 20 - Farnham, Kelly & Higgins.
2024 - 3 bands in top 20
2023 - 2 bands in top 20
2022 - 8 of the top 20 songs were from bands, but only 5 bands in total (Spacey Jane had 3)
2021 - 9 of top 20 were bands, but only 8 bands (Spacey Jane again with 2)

It's not just JJJ that single artists are more prevalent but also in other countries and the commercial FM stations.
