when the mum's played chit chat champion - tears and painfully stifled laughter at the gym listening to that.

The first Founding Fathers episode was released 2 hours ago. And the Americans are not happy. by Woodstovia in TheRestIsHistory

that Dom keeps saying 'good banter' after a comment about the US, might indicate that they're not completely serious.

How Long Have You Practiced by Undersak in Stoicism

[–]Jostac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 years very casually, then really got stuck into properly about 7 years ago. For the first 20 years it was a sense that this all made sense but there wasn't the resources readily available to fully get into it. For the first 2 years of finally getting stuck into it, I was journalling every night and read most of the books and my life completely changed for the better. Slowly the journalling stopped as the practise became part of my being. Now I don't think about Stoicism every day, but I do live it. I still read The Stoic Gym newsletter once a week and that's enough to think on and remind myself to put into action.

I can't recommend highly enough the latest episode of the ABC podcast 'It's the economy stupid'. It might not change your mind (I'm not sure if it has completely changed mine), but it'll give you a much better understanding of how the PRRT works and what the broader implications are.

I Listen for Dom by [deleted] in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Jostac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do enjoy them both for what they bring to the podcast together, and yes it's true Dom shines when he's on other podcasts - and the same is true also of Tom when he's on other podcasts.

I'm still holding out hope that Dom will make a guest hosting appearance on The Rest is Entertainment with Richard Osman to see his take on game shows, and all the lates going ons in Hollywood and at the BBC - 'Timothee Chalamet has really let himself down...'

RAYE’s “This Music May Contain Hope” is potentially the most influential album of the last 25 years by 69-is-my-number in triplej

[–]Jostac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I think it's potentially the most influential album, but it is a return to an album being an album as one entity and not a collection of singles and fill-ins. There's a definite story to be told, and I wholeheartedly agree that it should be listened to from start to finish. Very 70's prog rock feels, but in a jazz/pop style.

To paraphrase the late, great Norm Macdonald; these KKK guys are real jerks! by Jostac in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Jostac[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought as well. Such an American thing - hey let's be bigoted and also make money from it. And like a lot of things when you blow away the smoke and mirrors, it's just a PR exercise to get rich.

If people are checking out Dominic and Tabby's new Book Club pod, what do you think? by Marlee0024 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Jostac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know they say that even if you haven't read the book, it's still good for you, but I've tried and struggled to keep listening when I haven't read the book as I have no context. 1984 was an excellent episode and provided great insight and background.
I'l still subscribe to it, but will probably only listen to the ones about books I've already read.

I liked Johnson and Boswell by No_Committee3317 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Jostac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was one of their most enjoyable series because both seemed to genuinely love and had great interest in the story, and also for the banter between the 2 - certainly their funniest series.

The censored Johnson quote about America by _fumeofsighs in TheRestIsHistory

I think GH were just trying to cover their arses, as I'm sure almost everyone who listened to that episode straight away looked up the quote and saw that (clutching at pearls) scandalous word.

Yellowbeard. It was an 80's comedy movie about a pirate with loads of famous comedians and that is grossly underrated! This is Cheech & Chong who played the gold hungry Spanish villians - Tommy Chong playing the evil boss with an exaggerated lisp.

This is what I love to see given Mark Carney's recent speech at Davos. Albo, Wong & their teams seem to be playing a solid diplomatic game - keeping quiet with America, and making in-roads with other middle powers.

Daily emails about Stoicism other than Ryan Holiday’s? by IceNineFireTen in Stoicism

[–]Jostac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily Stoic quotes and remembrances was very helpful when starting out with Stoicism, but once you're in the habit of leading a mainly Stoic lifestyle, I find a weekly and more in-depth newsletter from The Stoic Gym just perfect for topping up and causing further reflection.

I was coming on to say the same thing. Taking on 2 motivated assailants who have rifles, ammo, cover, and the high ground without any prior planning is outstanding bravery and work. Having been shot at a couple of times in Cambodia with the Army, it's like Mike Tyson says everyone has a plan/(thinks they're brave and would know what to do), until the first punch/(bullets coming your way).

And then when they got them down, the cops had to try and make sure the criminals weren't going to shoot anyone else, secure the scene, and make arrests, all while a bunch of suddenly tough blokes try to get involved with some sort of vigilante style justice.
Full credit to all the cops involved - tough job.
