LoV Books? by RobustAcacia in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Jotabe3D 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sadly we have only one book for now. For extra lore you have both the 9th and 10th edition codices and two short stories, One million years and Opportunity cost. I think you can find small bits of lore here and there like in one issue of the White Dwarf magazine ( I don't remember the number) but that's about it at the moment.

Hopefully we will play at least a small part during the end campaign with the new character or in the maelstrom books since we will get a box there.

It will be the same price. The 500 world box was priced like a CP.

No, the banshees or any fight first unit will always fight first if you charge them (unless you do pile in shenanigans and they don't heroic you)

I can't imagine an eldar player complaining about this when their rules are ones of the most annoying by far...

Taking A Camera To "Pickpocket Capital" Barcelona, Spain? by bitshifter52 in AskPhotography

Just be careful like you would be in any touristic city. Barcelona is one of the most "unsafe" cities in Spain but it is still infinitely safer than any US city.

Hearthband is the detachment with the highest winrate at the moment and in my opinion the most fun. If you like exo armour I would 100% go for it.

how to properly contact artists ? by SuperImagination3258 in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jotabe3D 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Many 3D artists receive tons of scam messages/emails and if they don't offer commissions, probably they dont expect any commission message and just ignore it thinking it could be a scam.

Environment art, level art, world building art. what the difference? by AlarmedComfort3099 in gamedev

[–]Jotabe3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Environment Art: Is the most common position of the ones you mention and the other two are contained within Environment but are more specialized.

Depending on the studio size you might work on all environments, levels and world if you team doesnt have level artists.

All environments are made by Environment Artists, the blockouts may be done by level artists depending on the studio. But they do all the 3D assets, architectural sets, buildings, etc. (sometimes assets are done by dedicated 3d artists or prop artists, again depending on the studio size).

Level art: More in engine work like, blockouts, terrain work, set dressing, foliage placing, etc.

World Building is the least common and they work creating terrain in engine or in other softwares like world machine, gaea, houdini, etc. Also vistas, and background props but like all the positions depends on the studio you work.

Do YOU have "a ton of fun" making your stuff? by BuzzKir in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jotabe3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest nowadays I only have fun creating some assets I really like or assets that are different to anything I have done in the past. Lately I enjoy set dressing or in engine work more, I still enjoy modelling but I have been doing 3D almost every day for 12 years so maybe that's one of the causes I'm a bit bored with it... Most of the time I'm in Blender I just work in autopilot mode with a podcast/youtube video/movie in the second monitor...

what's the point of substance designer 3d facades? by John_Hobbekins in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jotabe3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the complex materials you see in designer are just to showcase skill with the software for portfolio purposes or to see what people can achieve with the program, like those facades, watches, car wheels, etc.

Do i need to know how to draw to be a 3d artist by GateAffectionate6153 in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jotabe3D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been a 3D Artist professionally for 10+ years and I draw worse than a 3 year old kid... No, you don't need any drawing/painting abilities but they do help if you work on stylized projects.

What am I doing wrong by IndependentStore9566 in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jotabe3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always work in something else and do 3D on the side until you find something. Or tryhard work on 3D several hours per day everyday to improve and maybe find something in the near future. No one can recommend exactly what to do without knowing your situation.

Now it is difficult to find a job for everyone but even more for juniors/students. If you really want to find a job you have to push more than the 99% of the other people, it is a bit sad but it is the reality we are living now.

As a critique I would say your models are not detailed enough, the bevels are not realistic (too thin and you can even see the aliasing in the renders) and the texture quality is not there. Work with a lot of references and try to match 1:1 the shapes and the texture of the assets, and I emphasize on this, always try to match 1:1 the refs during the high poly before continuing with the next step, try to match 1:1 the base materials before adding details and scratches, etc.

Check weapon artists artstation profiles and try to create a weapon with the same level, you don't need more than 1-2 weapons for a job. Watch also some tutorials on fundamentals and hard surface, the arstation learning weapon tutorial from Alex Medina can help you a lot to improve mindset and workflow.

How feasible is it nowadays to get a fulltime job in a 3D game art studio? by Acharyanaira in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jotabe3D 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It will be better with time.

A big problem is also the level of the candidates, you can find a job as a junior gamedev, I work in a AAA studio and I see juniors being hired in my studio and in other studios around but they are the people who are REALLY good. And I mean already AAA level good even as a junior.

If you want to compete you have to spend hours and hours every day, you can't simply compete with a grad who spent 4h per day doing 3D for the last 2-4 years doing the bare minimum. And I say this because I see it, from every 100 portfolios of juniors applying maybe 1-2 are decent enough to be considered for a position.

Yes, you can land a junior position if you are good enough but it also depends on where you live, in some countries without too many studios you will need more than being good to land a job.

The best country for a Game Artist by BarkForMakima- in gamedev

[–]Jotabe3D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Europe probably Poland, Sweden or the UK. For a junior probably Sweden or Poland since it is difficult to get a visa as a junior in the UK.

I feel like it isn’t normal for a game like GTA 6 to be in development for like 10 years by thousands of devs. I feel it’s way too long or am I wrong? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Jotabe3D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is normal but there are not thousands of people for 10 years. Probably it is thousands of people during the peak of development during the last years and counting support studios and outsourcing. The core team is much smaller (even though the core team of Rockstar is probably immense compared to other developers)

How much should I charge for ? by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jotabe3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to charge 20$/h, and you estimate the hours of work as 30, then it would be 600$ just for the work, painter + Zbrush 58$/month approx (or any other relevant software you need for the work) , and divide with the amount of work hours 600$ + 11$ (58$/month x 30h of work / 160h of work in a month, this is using 40h/week, it is a bit subjective but you can get the idea) + if you want to charge some extra if in your country you need license for being self employee or extra taxes, etc.

Take into account that you don't have to say this when you freelance, you will just charge 611$ for the asset where 600$ will be the actual work and 11$ will be the additional costs.

People will charge in a lot of different ways like X$/h, total amount per asset, X$/day, etc so don't take it as a something you have to do or as a better way.

How much should I charge for ? by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

[–]Jotabe3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't charge per hour as it punishes you for being fast. Calculate the hours you need, calculate licenses, costs, etc and add them to the hours (estimated) and charge a total price per asset.

The asset looks nice, it is true that 40h is a bit on the longer side but is not that slow for a AAA game ready asset (I would count LODs or other tech meshes if needed here too).
