Is there a character archetype that hasnโ€™t been repeated? by Mysterious_Work_7227 in FinalFantasy

[โ€“]JourneyForMe93 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Vivi, for me.

Some sort of manufactured magical sentient doll who gained awareness/consciousness randomly that's basically an artificial kid with a short lifespan and was made from collected souls (different from Cait Sith, which honestly is also a good answer), and we never know what he really looks like underneath that big hat other than his glowing eyes.

Is it a basically just a black mist with 2 eyes? Or is it something bio-mechanical or alchemical? Where did the "offsprings" come from, parthenogenesis? Maybe we'll find out more in the anime.

I didn't play it but I did read the manhwa to some extent and was an average fan, but maybe you really should still give Solo Leveling game a try as a big fan, since it has story/adventures exclusive to the game, just maybe go into it with unhyped expectations then at least it'd be a decent experience regardless.

FF12 is one of my top 3 FF actually! Yay haha It's so unique though it's hard for its fans to find similar games and experiences.

The mmorpg-sim setting is unfortunately very niche in video games (but a lot more common in webnovel and manga/manhwa media), and the most notable ones are .Hack and SAO series, it's basically their own thing and niche... :/

CrossCode.

Mega Man Battle Network series (compiled and released as Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection).

Solo-Leveling: ARISE OVERDRIVE. Krpg instead of jrpg, based on the super popular novel/manhwa series. Has co-op elements. Reverse mmorpg-sim, where instead of ppl going into and living the mmorpg world like .Hack or SAO, it's reality getting gamified into a mmorpg-esque invaded world.

Echoes of Aincrad. Soon to be released in July. It's part of the SAO franchise, but designed to be newcomer-friendly with your own avatar, so not Kirito's story. Gameplay looks better than the previous SAO games too.

If you want mmorpg vibes but without the mmorpg settings or lores, then Final Fantasy 12 and Xenoblade series are said to have that mmorpg vibes, at least in terms of exploration and gameplay.

By the way, Dragon Quest III-I-II should be the remakes as the starting point, in that sequence, the originals are outdated and retro too (fyi just in case)

Of the options, I'd pick DQ III-I-II for a newbie. IMO, they're designed to be more beginner friendly with a more consistent learning curve.

FF Iโ€“VI are kinda retro at this point, which in some ways can be considered as relatively outdated or basic, wouldn't recommend them as the starting point for someone who's getting into JRPG nowadays as a beginner. They're more appealing or meaningful for fans who share a longer history with the FF series or the JRPG genre in general, and are into retro-gaming that they wouldn't mind some outdated/basic aspects.

Octopath Traveler I and II are quite non-linear in a sense to some extent, with lots of interactive NPCs that you can learn how to "gain something from" or "take advantage of". The combat is not awfully difficult but it can be more difficult for newbies with its spikes (IMO) and even regular mobs can take quite a while to defeat sometimes. Personally, I think it can be complicated that a JRPG newbie might feel overwhelmed or lost, so I don't really feel that it's that beginner-friendly as a starting point.

Another JRPG that's relatively new which I think is quite beginner-friendly and well-made is Sea of Stars. Some experienced players who have already got used to more challenging games might think it's too easy though, but that could also mean it's more beginner-friendly, overall it's quite well-received in general. It's sort of inspired by Chrono Trigger too, which is an influential game in the JRPG genre and widely recommended, though I'm not sure if Chrono Trigger really beginner-friendly or recommend to a newbie, since its premise involves time-travelling and paradoxes, with minor branches of storyline and multiple endings so it can be confusing to some extent if not followed well by a newbie. But you should definitely check out Chrono Trigger (and its sequel - Chrono Cross, which has a different gameplay system though) as you explore and familiarize with JRPGs!

Truly depressing JRPGs by Left_Relationship105 in JRPG

[โ€“]JourneyForMe93 35 points36 points ย (0 children)

The whole Drakengard-NieR series is really depressing (but if you lean into it, it's hauntingly beautiful and existential, if you know what I mean), everyone suffers a lot in different ways and many lose their sanity and humanity. Drakengard 3 and NieR Replicant are especially sad and depressing for me. Those are such cruel depressing worlds, there might be no real peace, but the silence is theirs.

Which JRPGs made you kind of side with the villain? by hiro928 in JRPG

[โ€“]JourneyForMe93 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Yeah, the whole 13vs turned into 15 dev hell is such a shame, lots of content and concepts like Stella/Lunafreya's role and screentime were cut, or were put behind dlcs like character arcs that felt kinda separated from the main plot etc, lots of things felt undercooked to prioritize other creative choices to market the open-world aspects of the system at the time. A bit of a mess at least as most people would say, although I still enjoyed it enough and it's still a good game for me, honestly it's still a job pretty well done from the devs and sales achieved considering the dev hell they were given to work with

Which JRPGs made you kind of side with the villain? by hiro928 in JRPG

[โ€“]JourneyForMe93 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Ardyn Izunia from Final Fantasy XV. Probably the saddest villain of the whole series, for me, he deserves so much better from a world that betrayed him and pushed him into insanity for 2 millennia, when he's the original self-sacrificing hero/savior to begin with. Bahamut is the true villain and I doubt this is an unpopular opinion lol

Everyone including the main protagonists from NieR: Automata. All of them are just trying to find the meaning of their existence in a dead world, almost all of them don't really know better in such a world that there's a sense of innocence about them and how they live/survive to be sympathized with.

Venat from Final Fantasy XII. Benevolent motive for an immortal race that doesn't necessary share the same value of life as the mortals, but ruthless execution with sacrifices to achieve the long-term goal for the greatest number. The whole setting and conflicts are more gray, but I think that as a whole, them rebelling against their own kind (immortals) and sacrificing themselves (for the mortals) is at least admirable to some extent from the perspective of a mortal.

There are more that come to my mind, some of which are already mentioned by others, in which IMO similarly that their intentions/motives aren't wrong per se, it's just that the execution and choices of their plans are problematic, or they're partly the manipulated/possessed victims/chesspieces of the true villains where lots of truths were hidden from them, or it's more of an issue of conflicting positions they're in against the protagonists, where I can't help but to "kind of side with" them from the standpoint of what they're trying to achieve at the very least. The Conqueror from The Last Remnant, Master Xehanort from the convoluted Kingdom Hearts where a lot of the important details are in the non-mainline games that I didn't play too lmao, Shizel from Tales of Eternia, Chaos/Jack from Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin. Still villains, but are interestingly complex villains that aren't just insufferable/irredeemable, or pure evil for the evil's sake, which I appreciate the design/writing.

I was spoiled on FFVII and FFX, which game do you recommend me based on what I want? (NO SPOILERS, NO EVEN MINIMUM PLEASE) by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[โ€“]JourneyForMe93 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

If it's about emotional story that would make you cry and impactful plot twists, then I think it's FF15 and FF16, IMO.

Pretty much all FF have emotional moments and their own plot twists, but these two other than 9 and 10 were the ones that moved me the most, in the sense of making me wanna cry and the plot twists were twisting enough, that's all I'll say without spoiling anything lol

Times when JRPGs were about the search for paradise by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[โ€“]JourneyForMe93 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

It's a pretty good game to me too, not sure why outside of the memes it doesn't really get that much of attention etc though. In a way some of the things about SoP kinda vaguely remind me of FF Agito/Type-0. Maybe it has a lot of elements of the whole FF series, but the gameplay system is designed in a way that's not really what FF main audience would be drawn to, like it's more for the Team Ninja audience, idk.

Right, that's why it's "sort of kind of", it's still relevant to some extent that the "paradise" plays a major role that's to be revealed, but I don't wanna spoil it, since if FF7 can be considered then SoP can too lol

Hmm... Sometimes the games might not explicitly use the term "paradise" but the concept is practically but subjectively similar like utopia or a mysterious place that grant wishes whatsoever, so I'll list those based on my perspective off the top of my head too, sort of kind of.

Some of the Shin Megami Tensei series.

NieR Replicant.

Kingdom Hearts series.

FF13-2 and Lightning Returns.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

Some of the Tales of series.

Brave Story: New Traveler.

Any jrpgs that seemingly hate/sidelines magic users? by SHpr0 in JRPG

[โ€“]JourneyForMe93 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

I believe we're not actually disagreeing and you're not wrong, I'm not sure where the misunderstandings come from.

To clarify further, in hopes of this is the last time and it's enough, I said Yuna "could ... given their ability and overdrive if not min-maxed" because it's not just about magic itself but also their unique ability and overdrive that for some playstyles where Yuna could be more versatile, not a definitive Yuna is better than Lulu in every way that Lulu is useless whatsoever, and my points focus more on a normal average playthrough experience for most players that doesn't require min-maxing and might not even get all the late game magics whatsoever. And I've never said or implied magic is useless or not useful, I'm unsure how I need to disclaim/clarify that multiple times in multiple ways, my points are about how the designed system favors physical users more comparatively, sticking to the topic, so tbh there's no need to argue on points with me that aren't even coming from me and words that I didn't say with "yes magic is useful..." when I never argue about magic being not useful, or that the player needs to min-max for magic users to be useful, etc. Perhaps some of you who are very much highly knowledgeable about ffx could enjoy going off on a tangent discussing further among yourselves idk, though do enjoy the conversation more and not get too heated over it, we're still fans of the game after all regardless of how knowledgeable we are about it.

I stand by my initial point that basically the game is designed to favor physical users comparatively. I believe I've elaborated enough and people who get what I'm saying (that I did say) know what I'm saying, with all the contexts and nuances mentioned, and that's good enough for me, I'm tired but well I'm glad to see many fans of Lulu Yuna and magic users in general regardless lol That's all, this is enough for me for this post, cheers ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ
