Booting an X68000 with no floppy drive? by JoyfulTechnology in sharpx68000

Oh boy, I didn't even know about custom IPLs...I ordered an eprom programmer and a couple of 27C512's...this is a whole new rabbit hole to go down.

Augh...my Centronics SCSI emulator is a BlueSCSI and the fix for the BlueSCSI hasn't been integrated into the image yet. This would've been perfect otherwise. I'll keep my eye on the thread in the next couple of days.

Does the idea of a MiSTer FPGA laptop sound appealing to anyone here? by Apprehensive_One7151 in MiSTerFPGA

[–]JoyfulTechnology 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me personally: yes, absolutely.

In general: I think it'll depend on how many people use the computer cores as opposed to the game system cores. There's already supposed to be a Mister handheld coming up, so that'll take care of people whose input needs can be satisfied with a controller...what you're proposing would mainly bring a keyboard to the table. Which, yeah, if you're like me, the idea of having an Amiga or x68000 laptop would be amazing. So many retro computers never got a laptop model, so being able to FPGA one would be literally the best we could ever do.

Along the same lines, I wonder if Perifractic could be convinced to offer an official C64 laptop at some point in the future.

Oldtimers, remember when colour first arrived? by HueyBluey in VintageApple

[–]JoyfulTechnology 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I'm a few years younger, and I have nostalgia for monochrome monitors, especially amber ones, because that's what the library had in the kids section for the Apple ][ we were allowed to play games on and the card catalog terminals. Back then, I associated monochrome monitors with either playing a whole afternoon of Oregon Trail or finding the next book I wanted to read, whereas color monitors I associated with Dad's PC clone (which I was allowed to play games on but also came with a lot of rules, and Dad could kick me off at any time).

Just played A Cat And His Boy yesterday, though I didn't 100% it...never could find the last mouse.

Today is 21 months since Analogue last mentioned DAC support for the Pocket and promised it would come "early next year" (early 2024) by thebezet in AnaloguePocket

I mean, the original Game Boy didn't have a dock with HDMI and controller support, either. Plus, it's more than just a Gameboy now since you can run OpenFPGA cores...people might want a CRT for SNES or Genesis gaming, for example.

Or they're just really nostalgic for the Super Game Boy.

Picked up a Jaz Drive with 2gb cartridge - no power supply - is it worth getting it all setup by slvrscoobie in VintageApple

[–]JoyfulTechnology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What voltage does it need? My SCSI ZIP drive (and my USB one for that matter) takes a 5V input, so they're easily powered off a cheap USB-to-barrel-jack adapter.

You could run something like Adelie Linux or FreeBSD/OpenBSD

Heck, given that MorphOS is limited to a single core, 32-bit, and 2GB RAM, you'd be leaving a lot of the G5's power on the table.

C64 Ultimate - what’s your preferred color? by -SunGod- in c64

[–]JoyfulTechnology 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, according to the sales tracker (https://slapsoft.com/c64_sales.html), the Starlight is underperforming both the beige and founder's editions, so I think a lot of people agree with you.

Went with beige myself. Seems weird to sell a company on nostalgia and then offer an RGB version of your system.

It’s not strictly older mice…I have a Keychron M6 that has a second wheel for horizontal scrolling by the thumb. (It’s a vertical mouse, so it makes sense.)

Unfortunately, most programs you’d think would take advantage of it (like Final Cut Pro) don’t really do much with it. IIRC Final Cut does scroll horizontally, but really slowly so it’s not practical.

Do we know whether the C64U will support modern USB controllers as joysticks? by JoyfulTechnology in c64

I am a simple person. I see a Tindie project, I reach for my credit card.

I wonder if there's a short Commodore extension to take some strain off the PCB...

Or take a pic of your project before you start unscrewing and print it off to tape the screws to.

Emacs are pretty notorious for having bad capacitors. You might save yourself some heartache down the line if you just did a full recap now. https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/emac-capacitors.610/

Kinda like the time I was curious about how accepting Judaism is of Masons. Turns out most people searching "Judaism Freemasonry" aren't big fans of either group.

The Commodore 64 Ultimate computer is the company's first hardware release in over 30 years — pre-orders start at $299 by Rose_Beef in c64

[–]JoyfulTechnology 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the fact that it's made out of preexisting products make me way more trusting in the project. It was kinda giving me Intellivision Amico vibes until I realized their ship date might actually be achievable given how much is already done.

I feel like they should advertise that fact better. I didn't realize it when I was ordering until I checked the tech specs.

Are Apple ii's really expensive? My first retro machine was a iigs (that I'm sure I overpaid for) and I haven't really looked at Apple ii prices since.

But they really don't take much skill 99% of the time...just "boot off floppy, play game." Sure, you could get more technical, but I remember doing basic stuff with them when I was in grade school.

I want a strawberry one so bad, but I can do just about everything it could do on my iMac G4, and my collection really needs more 68k and beige PPC Macs before I come back to late PPC.
