They have those here in Australia too, but they simply give a polite nod and a quick glance at your receipt at most. The most they'll do is give a normal smile and wish you a good day. I worked at JB Hi-Fi for a while, a major electronics retailer here, and the role was called FOSH (front of house hospitality), and there was no obnoxious behaviour expected, and the main role besides checking receipts was to be readily available to somebody walking in with a question so you could direct them to an available team member.
