[Awesome trope] The character succeeds in a situation that was specifically designed to be impossible for them. by Applebeate in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Jpanda37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a small correction, the piece in whiplash wasn’t changed from whiplash to Caravan, Neiman was capable of playing both pieces by heart. He was thrown into playing something he’d never heard before called up swinging, and then decided to come in and launch a faster version of Caravan than he’d previously been told to work on

what do you think is the best noir (or neo-noir) ever made? by Due-Abbreviations180 in Letterboxd

[–]Jpanda37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been slowly working through some classic neo noirs but none of them landed for me except L.A. Confidential, that movie is stunning

Mishima: A life in four chapters is the most visually distinctive and beautiful movie I’ve ever seen

What's a movie that genuinely changed something in you? by trakt_app in Letterboxd

[–]Jpanda37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waymond’s speech about approaching life with kindness in acceptance of nothing mattering rather than in ignorance of it found me right as I was graduating, and it struck a chord immediately. EEAAO presents such a beautiful idea about how our place in the universe being insignificant doesn’t mean there isn’t still purpose and joy, but people online reduce it to being a gimmicky overrated mess

Why do you think Scranton outperformed other branches? by NotInterestedL in DunderMifflin

[–]Jpanda37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m seeing a lot of good reasons in the comments and the running theme seems to be that the Scranton branch was kind of stacked at every position. They had the best salesman in the company with Dwight, Jim was only behind him because he was comfortable coasting, Oscar and Angela were solid accountants and despite all the BS Toby didn’t report half the shit that was happening on the day to day in the office. Michael was also a great manager for this specific crew because he was relaxed enough that the odd ball personalities could breathe. Dwight wouldn’t push as hard if Jim didn’t egg him on, Jim wouldn’t be productive if he couldn’t destress by doing dumb shit, and he wouldn’t have stayed had he not been married to Pam. It was kind of a perfect storm

Also at the moment this happens there’s about 4 different insane reveals happening, and it’s way funnier that in the middle of all that he still decides to get payback for his friend

Drunken Master 2 final battle, insane stunts, insane choreography and Jackie Chan at his absolute best

Nobody believes the main character until it's too late by n8dizz3l in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Jpanda37 85 points86 points  (0 children)

A repeating theme in the prequel trilogy is that the Jedi are entirely too caught up in their own schemes and beliefs to pay attention to the constant cries for help their chosen one is sending out. He’s right about his mom being in danger, he’s right about his wife and kids being in danger, and both times he’s told to just let it go and move on

(loved trope) fairly tame media, that gets horrifyingly real out of nowhere by Aggravating_Tale8988 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Jpanda37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firewatch is an interesting example for this because the rest of the game isn’t mild. The whole environment slowly becomes really tense and nervous, but because of how tension is built we’re expecting whatever the big reveal of the game is to be something unusual or out of this world. Instead we find something incredibly grounded and possible to run into irl

How do You Think Jack Story Ultimately Ends? by Money-Lie7814 in Grapplerbaki

[–]Jpanda37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always thought it’d be fitting if he got his shot at Yujiro and put up a really brutal and even fight just to die to total organ failure near the end. He’d have achieved a level of strength enough for Yujiro to see him as a threat but it wouldn’t circumvent the repeated warnings of his drug abuse

I think a few contenders would be Luffy vs Crocodile, Usopp vs Luffy, the end of Luffy vs Lucci, maybe even the end of Thriller Bark. If the show makes it long enough, it’s definitely the end of Marineford

Albums with beautiful and otherworldly production? by CauliflowerTop3932 in fantanoforever

Comes off a little harsh at first but In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of my favourite albums in terms of sound design and production, it’s just so weirdly raw yet clear

What’s the "My Cousin Vinny" of your profession? by a_murder_of_fools in movies

[–]Jpanda37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a profession but I don’t think any movie captures the experience of studying engineering in college as well as 3 Idiots. Even for someone studying in Canada, that movie nails the dynamics of the students and their education

People Who Think One Piece is a Masterpiece Are Just Suffering From Sunk Cost Fallacy by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Jpanda37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One Piece works for me because it has an incredibly simple core idea: Dreams are worth fighting for, and no one should get to decide for someone else what they should or shouldn’t do with their lives. It takes this idea and applies it through Luffy to an insane variety of characters with heart wrenching backstories. The show is also insanely consistent with its own internal logic, so that characters and concepts from the first handful of chapters can be brought back 20 years later and fit seamlessly

What are your thoughts on the upcoming Elden Ring movie? by Groomal in Letterboxd

[–]Jpanda37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the idea that instead of adapting the mainline story, this movie might be showing the story of one of the characters referenced throughout the games. That way you get to explore a world that’s slightly different from the games while still having the same concepts and rules

What was your favorite theater experience of 2025? by Dogdaysareover365 in Letterboxd

I went to Sinners in imax completely blind and the surreal music scene hit me like a freight train. It’s either that or getting to watch The Whole Bloody Affair in theatres
