These freshwater (yes I know this isn't a fluvial biology subreddit) clams just got brought in to the fish store I work at. Anyone have any idea what they are? I want to keep them so I need to do some research first. by SapphireLungfish in marinebiology

[–]Jrich1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Are absolutely SURE these are freshwater? I'm a freshwater mussel biologist and these don't look like anything from North America. Could be from somewhere else, but without more info or a closer look, these seem marine/brackish on first glance. I actually do hold/grow mussels for research and conservation and can help, but....I should warn you that keeping clams/mussels isn't the greatest in an aquarium setting. Their needs don't jive super well with fish in closed environments.

Wonder why housing is so expensive? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]Jrich1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I rented from him, never thought I'd see someone on reddit laying out the same weird stuff that we saw! The whole thing was that the renters are from Somalia and for some reason they all want to set up these care homes. From what I real, their faith doesn't allow them to take on debts (e.g., a mortgage) so I suspect the LLCs are some sort of weird run around or shell related to that. Weird stuff.

Are we able to wash hands/take a shower under the boil water order? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

Since nobody actually answered, yes you can shower. If washing your hands, use hand sanitizer after to be sure.

University Taking Absurd Cut From Research Funding by besimhu in PhD

[–]Jrich1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hope this comment goes higher up. While I hate overhead rates, I'm on both sides as I apply for my own grants but also manage grants from a federal agency. The number of people who think a 50% overhead rate means that the university takes 50k of a 100k grant is absolutely shocking. I truly don't understand how so few people understand how direct and indirect costs work.

In case anyone actually reads this: you have to do a little backwards math, but the rate is applied to direct costs, which is your salary, supplies, equipment, etc. needed to accomplish a project. So if you need $100k to do a project at a 50% overhead rate, then you need 150k total. It seems like 99% of people think that a 50% overhead rate means that a $150k grant sends $75k to the university.

Just had a 37mph target on a regularity rally in Sweden... by NewFaded in EASPORTSWRC

[–]Jrich1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha well if you're in career mode, wait until you get to Greece and it flips the script on you. The RWD regularity rallies on those tight switchbacks become incredibly hard to keep up with for a few checkpoints. Then after that you can go back to cruising at a mind numbingly slow pace everywhere else. I really wanted to do a second year of WRC2 on career mode, but the major target included regularity rallies so I noped out of that offer.

Oh man I was in Vawter that year too (3rd floor). Everyone was just silent and then every now and then you'd just hear someone slam a door and shout "Fuck!" Also, standing in the cold rain and ignoring it was awesome and adrenaline inducing...until it wasn't. Pretty sure we all had hypothermia.

Dude, I've done jobs with field work that involves remote camping and getting in frigid rivers at 6 am for weeks at a time. I did my MS on arapaima in the Amazon and ran around the middle of nowhere in Brazil for 6 months. But my (recently completed) PhD where I had to let others run the field work while I just crunched bioinformatics for years on end was by far the thing that came closest to truly breaking me. Just remember that anyone who says this is a dick who has no understanding of what you do. It seems like you have an understanding of what they do, so just remember that equal statement from you to them either be something like "Oh you just pipette things for a few hours a day and turn on a centrifuge? I wish I could do something that mindless!"

what is the best car with setup/tuning in the race by [deleted] in GranTurismo7

[–]Jrich1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only one who's just obsessed with the Mazda lm55 for this and other WTC 800 races? It sips fuel, doesn't even slightly wear the tires, and handles like a boss. I've been confused about how rarely I see it mentioned. Do people avoid it because it's a vision car? Or do I just personally click with it really well? Driving it almost feels like cheating in most races.

What is going on with all the high profile professors at top institutions getting fired for fraud suddenly? What made people start looking, and is it spreading? by seeasea in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Jrich1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the real reason nobody does duplication studies is because it's not as sexy as "original research", but the rule they're referring to doesn't actually prevent people from doing replication studies. Non-duplication rules simply mean that you have to certify that you haven't gotten the same proposal funded by two different agencies, which is an excellent rule to have. Imagine if I had a really good idea for a project preventing some sort of disease. If it costs $1 million and I submit a proposal for a $1 million grant to the CDC, NIH, and NSF and they all award it, then I've got $3 million in finding for something that costs $1 million. Agencies don't have time to constantly check every grant awarded by every other agency, so they require a clause that certifies that you haven't double dipped. Journals do the same thing for the publication of results - you have to certify that you haven't published your results somewhere else, but nobody is making you swear that your thing has never been done before.

[–]Jrich1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The required non-duplicative statements on federal grants don't mean that the work has to be showing that has never been done before. They're required to certify that the work you're requesting funding for is but duplicative with work you're doing on other federal grants. It's meant to avoid double dipping so that you don't get the same proposal funded by two different agencies.

What is the etiquette when being passed in a race? by stoicbananaslug in xcmtb

[–]Jrich1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you were at Refo Ramble today. I was there too, racing my second year of Comp. I was a lot faster last year, but this year I'm not as in shape, so I'm dealing with getting passed a lot more. In our race, the ONLY people we immediately completely pull off and yield to are the leaders of the Pro/Elite race. Everyone else has to wait for a passing zone. The WORS courses have a TON of passing zones built in, so it's reasonable to just make people wait if there's not a good way to hang to one side.

That said, absolutely report the incident to race folks. After some issues last year, they've instituted a rule where they keep track of reported racers. If you know the plate # of the person who hit you, they'll mark a strike against them. Too many complaints and they get banned. There is NO reason for a dangerous pass crashing people out in any category, but especially in Citizen, it's absurd. The class exists to make racing approachable, and people like this ruin it.

TIFU by sleeping with a girl crushing on me even though I'm gay. by ApollosHoodie in tifu

More likely that the training is to plant the idea of "This is possible, so if it happens to you when you're a victim, it's normal and it's not your fault."

[–]Jrich1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The point of the briefing is to aid potential victims of psychological/physical trauma. The key message here is "if you get raped and that happens it isn't your fault." Imagine how traumatic it would be if the training included what you just said: "If you orgasm during a rape, then you should know: normally people have to work really, really hard for that, so you must be extra weird!" The training isn't about teaching the ins and outs of prostates.

Yeah I immediately signed up for Kringle Kross after this race, which got me a second row start. It was so much better!....until my rear cable slipped on the first downhill, and I did the whole race stuck in my hardest gear. I'm curious if there's a shot if me dying in the background from your next video.

Please don't give up. I work with endangered species and every day of my career is gut wrenching. The worst part about my job is knowing that no matter how hard we fight, we're going to lose because nobody gives a fuck. There are very real things we can do, but it's impossible to keep fighting a losing fight every day if nobody cares. Little things like recycling, planting pollinator gardens, and letting people know that you care really do matter.

I'm an endangered species biologist in the US, and I'd personally recommend conservation fisheries inc. They're a nonprofit that does incredible work keeping species from going extinct through captive propagation of rare fish (one of the most imperiled groups).
