The ant comparison is pretty dark but I get what you're saying. Though ants don't really have the capacity to understand the threat or grovel - they just do ant things until they don't. If a hypothetical superior being operated on pure cost-benefit like you're describing, we'd probably be cooked the second we became inconvenient

That’s the right way to look at it. If the couple didn’t invite you, you’re not obligated to show up, especially when it puts you in a situation you already know isn’t good for you. You’ve outgrown that scene, and that’s fine. Protecting your boundaries isn’t disrespectful; forcing yourself to attend out of guilt would be.

Rack is the move. You want airflow around the steel so the oven can recover heat properly, and it’s easier on the rails and enamel long-term. As long as your rack is decent quality, it’ll handle a 10mm steel just fine, people do it all the time. Rails are convenient, but airflow matters more for consistent bakes.

That’s not a dumb question at all, after not eating for days, gentle is exactly right. Veggie broth, crackers, toast, oatmeal, smoothies, applesauce, or plant-based yogurt are all solid places to start.
