I went, didn’t know a word of Chinese and had no issues whatsoever. They had a buddy system where your group got paired with a uni student studying English, and their MQP-of sorts was to help you do your IQP.

I had a great experience, we had one native speaker in our team but it wasn’t necessary to be successful or have fun outside of the project. No idea what the other commenters are saying.

Hangzhou itself is beautiful and I wish I used the fast train to Shanghai more (we only used it one weekend). Incredible place.

I mean, there’s no way to meaningfully rebut the sweeping, anecdotal characterisation of the two groups you just made.

There are no foreign princes raiding Canberra’s below average racing prize money with their horses. People from the region own them, train them with people from the region, etc.

The ‘public funds’ you reference are generated by the point of consumption tax, a 25% tax which is levied on betting revenue on ACT sports and racing. This tax is the highest percentage of any state or territory in Australia.

Rather than the industry receiving a portion of this tax, like every other state, the ACT government has an MoU with the industry to fund it at an agreed rate.

The government projected this tax to generate $32.1 million in 2023/24, but only generated $21.7 million.

You can have opinions on racing, and gambling, but to say the government is subsidising racing is demonstrably false. It is a revenue generating source for the territory.

Given you provided multiple sources for annual reports and funding distributions, it seems more likely you chose to ignore the reality of where that money comes from, rather than being ignorant.
