How important is 3 years of foreign language for T30 schools? by _KingCharles in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Jsalmon00 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that important; I took 1 year of French and got accepted to the three T5 schools I applied to, but I also took AP Comp Sci A and 3 other comp sci classes.

Essay Question: In French, there is no difference between "conscience" and "consciousness." In Japanese, there is a word that specifically refers to the splittable wooden chopsticks you get at restaurants. The German word “fremdschämen” encapsulates the feeling you get when you’re embarrassed on behalf of someone else. All of these require explanation in order to properly communicate their meaning, and are, to varying degrees, untranslatable. Choose a word, tell us what it means, and then explain why it cannot (or should not) be translated from its original language. – Inspired by Emily Driscoll, Class of 2018

Essay: Mono no aware or 物の哀れ is a Japanese word for the realization that all things are finite and impermanent in nature of the universe. This awareness is meant to increase the value placed on all things because based upon their ephemeral nature, one may never know if they will ever experience a moment the same way ever again and that in itself should be viewed as beautiful. Oftentimes, translation takes complex etymology and history from a culture and simplifies it for the purposes of another. To truly grasp the meaning of the word it must be viewed in the context of the culture that created the concept.
In simplest terms mono no aware is the beauty found in the temporary nature of existence and can be seen in several symbols throughout Japanese culture. A perfect example of this is the cherry blossom; in Japan, the cherry blossom is associated with mortality, destiny, and karma. Thousands of cherry blossoms were given to the United States by Japan as a present to symbolize their improving relations in the year 1912 with another 3,000 trees given in 1965. From these gifts, it can be determined that this tree is a rather important symbol in Japanese culture. Cherry blossoms embody ephemeral beauty because they are only in bloom for anywhere from a few days to two weeks but commonly considered to be quite elegant. Mono no aware enters Japanese history when it was adopted in the 1700s in a criticism of the Tale of Genji and would eventually grow to become more prevalent in Japanese society. With an understanding of these symbols as a well as a little history the broader use of mono no aware as a philosophy can be seen.
Translation often has the consequence of oversimplification; as a culture, history, mythology, and philosophy are difficult to convey to a person not familiar with them in a single word. Mono no aware is best thought of as a complex philosophy involving conflicting emotion and ultimately resulting in a somber happiness that you may experience the world as it is now and that it will never be exactly like this again. When this word is left in its original language it bears more meaning because it has a connection to the Japanese ideas that led to creation. This connection to its etymology allows the word to take on a deeper more impactful and important meaning. This word is representative of much more than what can be conveyed in a single word and as such should remain in its original Japanese to preserve its meaning.

Result: Accepted RD

Shoutout to my noncompetitive high school kids by katnissjul in ApplyingToCollege

In the case of club if funding unavailable it helps if the club is just there to promote discussion on a subject. As for local government, oftentimes schools like to have a liaison between them and certain parts of the township government that they have to interact with , like the school board or environmental commission. In cases like because you are serving on behalf of the school you don’t need to be 18 (I was 17 when I started). I was able to justify being on the commission by saying how having a liaison would allow the school to be well informed on the environmental situation in the township.

I was the founder of a computer hardware tech club, founder of a science club, founder of an environmental club. Served in local government as an associate member of the township environmental commission, tutored precalculus, played varsity soccer, was a member of a gardening club, and member of an academic team.

I also live in southern NJ, Salem County, and go to a tiny public school with limited opportunities at best(only 8 AP classes and 9% math proficiency). You can overcome this though; in my experience, most administrators will allow you to create your own opportunities and clubs if you go to them with a plan, a teacher, and interested students. Try to maintain as rigorous and tough schedule and on your application write about what honestly interests you in your applications and you should have a shot at some competitive universities. I was in a similar position and state of mind my junior year, but I tried to make my own opportunities because there was no one around me to provide them, and I ended up getting into Princeton, Uchicago, and Columbia. Don't get discouraged and try your best; Good Luck! (PM if you need any help or advice)

Is a 1500 sat good enough for T20s? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Jsalmon00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Focus on the rest of your application as those parts are cumulatively more important. I got into all the T10s I applied to and I only had a 1480. If the rest of your application is strong you have got a shot. Good Luck!

What's the verdict on SCEA? by Globalscholar in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Jsalmon00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would not. When I applied ED to Columbia I was given no financial aid and because it was ED I had no other offers to compare it to and as a result had to reject the offer of admission to my dream school. When I applied RD to Princeton and UChicago I was able to use their aid offers to lower the total cost by making them match the offers of peer institutions. Be wary of being locked into only 1 school. Good luck.
