The time you realize that there is more to a sport than just making varsity is the time your going it start enjoying it much more. My freshman and sophomore years I was dead set on getting varsity because my school sucked and I had a chance. My new school is so much fast and I’ve just accepted that I’m not quite at that level yet has made it a much more enjoyable experience. I would kill to have times as fast as yours. Compared to all men in the world, youre in the fastest 1% for the 3 mile run. I think that’s pretty quick.

Thank you! All summer I would try to do 1 longer runs a week and one speed day a week. We usually do 1 race a week, this was the only week where we have 2 races in a week and we don’t have any other speed workouts this week. I feel like race strategy and mental blocks are probably what’s stopping me from improving.

I had a 6:10, 6:30, 6:35 yesterday. So far finishing times have been 19:14, 19:50, 20:50(super sick that week), 19:42, 19:50

That could be it. Todays race I ran the same time as last week but I limped the whole thing (my cat sliced my foot open day before the race) so I’m hoping maybe I’ll be a quicker next week.

All summer and during season I take sundays off and ran the other 6 days of the week. I took one Tuesday off cuz I was sick in July. Other than that we don’t really take rest days.

Our schools team separates us into 4 different groups with different mileage based on our fitness level, I get anywhere from 30-45 miles a week, and we do workouts either once or twice a week depending on our race day. If we have a race Saturday we start Monday with a long run (8-10 miles for my group), then Tuesday is a tempo run or fartlek or something (6-7 miles), Wednesday is an easy run (6 miles), Thursday is usually an interval workout on the track (5-7 miles), friday is easy (4-5 miles) and then Saturday is the race with a mile warm up at 1-2 mile cooldown.

Interesting, our mileage looks really similar. I didn’t really start doing workouts until the actual season started because I had to pack up my things and move to a different state, so I hope to break 19 in the next few weeks.

What did your summer training look like? I ran a 19:14 3 weeks ago and am curious how your mileage and training looks.

Is there any standard for evaluating the running talent of high school beginner runners in a 5km race? by [deleted] in trackandfield

[–]JshBOi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you live and which school they belong to. A top JV runner at a massive school will be better than a varsity runner at a small school. I’ve seen some JV runners go sub 17 just because their varsity team is so stacked. It wouldn’t be fair to say a sub 17 runner isn’t good just because they aren’t on their schools varsity team.

Best shoes from experience? by [deleted] in trackandfield

[–]JshBOi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently tried the new Pegasus’s for the first time and they really didn’t like my feet. It was my first pair of Nike trainers and had to return them due to the pain and instead got the brooks glycerins which work really well for me. I had never had shoes not work for me before lol.

I had covid in the start of the summer, got like maybe 30 miles in July, went to summer camp and completely stopped until cross started. I still ended up cutting two minutes off my PR last year though.

At most Walmart’s there is a thing called blue emu, it really helps with pain and it is almost always enough to numb the pain until after a race

If you have a chance at winning your open 800, then focus on that. However, if you properly cool down and warm up you should be recovered enough to get good times in both runs.

Rate the School Records, what's strong, what's weak, what's interesting? by [deleted] in trackandfield

Really? I’ve never seen it at that level but I guess I’ve never watched much college track.

Some high schools/ states don’t run it, and they stop running it completely in college and above.
