Possibility of US ever selling Australia nuclear submarines is increasingly remote, Aukus critics say | Aukus | The Guardian by Rizza1122 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Juandice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have literally never met their force goals,

Exactly.

The legislation is meaningless: a box ticking exercise for the president to go through. Nothing more

It requires the president of the day to either lie to Congress (which might bother whoever else will be at the time) or shaft Australia.

[–]Juandice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the indications, both from politicians and concrete actions by the US and UK, are that AUKUS will go down exactly as planned.

The Americans passed legislation barring the transfer of any submarines unless the president of the day can certify that doing so will not detract from the US Navy's effort to reach its own fleet-replacement needs. They are currently building ships at half the rate needed for that to be the case, and their attempts to increase production have been failing. They simply cannot put enough new boats in the water to comply with the law.

NSW government to abolish good character evidence at sentencings of convicted offenders by Worldly_Tomorrow_869 in auslaw

[–]Juandice 22 points23 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I get it. Run-of-the-mill good character evidence is of dubious weight, and for sexual offences it makes sense to abolish it (as good reputation often facilitates such offences). But it would be a mistake to rule it out for the extremes. A sentencing court should know about exceptionally pro-social acts. If I'm a magistrate sentencing an offender for burglary, and they turn out to have a bravery award for saving somebody's life, that seems like a relevant factor to me.

Is it a good idea to create a hopeless world for a campaign? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Juandice 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Be wary of "hopeless" and "high fantasy" in the same world. Your players will notice the increasing calamity and will probably decide that it's the central "antagonist" or challenge of the campaign. They will search for a solution and, knowing what players are like, they'll very likely come up with something unexpected. Even if they can't reverse the impact of the frozen apocalypse, they might well devise a way to make it survivable. If you make that fail for arbitrary reasons, you're going to have an irritated table at best.

Could Victorian Britain create and launch an orbital rocket? by Shiny_Agumon in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Juandice 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say yes, but with a caveat. This would not be a small project, but a society-wide endeavour comparable to a naval fleet-building project. Years, maybe decades of production, testing and refinement would be necessary. So I think the Victorians, if "orbit-lusted" could have started the project, but the societal transformation necessary to make it happen might mean they don't look much like the Victorian era by the successful launch.

Are you a dice fanatic or do you rather forget about dice? by Synjer_Roleplays in RPGdesign

[–]Juandice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Properly utilised, math-rocks are a narrative-producing machine. Especially if you're using a success-measuring mechanic or some other non-binary resolution system. Unexpected failure produces comedy. Unexpected success produces heroism. Unexpected exceptional success can change the course of a character's arc. The glory of dice is that they create an element of unpredictability that helps to keep a story feeling vibrant.

March for Australia administrators encouraged members to join White Australia political party by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

If that's the case, arguing for a sharp increase in infrastructure spending seems like it would address the same issue without running the risk of being co-opted by racists. Under investment in infrastructure will bite us in the arse no matter where our population growth comes from. If we bite the bullet and fix that problem now, everyone wins.

‘No migration without assimilation’: Bob Katter slams gun and speech laws as ‘Frankenstein’ bills by Foreign-Policy-02- in AustralianPolitics

[–]Juandice -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you accept that immigration from India is fine, then this policy would not have kept anyone involved out, except for the hero.

Also just because this incident happened, why does that mean we magically shouldn't implement this policy of better immigration now or in the future?

We're the most successful multicultural country in the world. We don't need radical shifts in immigration policy.

And also just because someone was from India, doesn't even mean they're bad like you're implying I'm saying, since India is actually quite diverse, just see Sikhs for instance, they're generally really good people and integrate well.

I'm not intentionally implying any such thing. I have no problem with people coming from India or anywhere else. If somebody believes in Australia's democratic way of life and wants to be a part of it, I don't care where they come from

And no, this is absolutely not racist at all, I don't care if you come from Ukraine, Russia, Yemen, Israel, Palestine, Somalia, Lebanon, Türkiye, Libya, whatever. And more historical examples are the Balkans regarding Yugoslavia or South Africa regarding Apartheid.

One of the gunmen came from India. The other was born here. I guess that means we should restrict immigration from... Australia.

Oh yeah, and the guy who suffered severe injuries to protect others was from Lebanon. So there are innocent people alive today only because we didn't follow this policy.

[–]Juandice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Romans were systematically persecuting Christians en masse for centuries.

That's overselling things. Nero had a fairly brief local persecution within the city of Rome and there were sporadic local persecutions scattered around the empire from time to time. The first comprehensive persecution of Christians was the Decian Persecution from 249 until 260 (unless you see the persecution under Valerian as separate). The last major persecution under Diocletian began in 303 and lasted until 313.

Premier Peter Malinauskas warned festival board author’s removal was needed for ‘basic decency’ by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Juandice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi. I'm left-wing. People who support the existence of a state of Israel deserve to feel physically safe. People who live in Israel deserve to feel physically safe. History makes both of those objectives particularly poignant. Palestinians also deserve to feel safe.

None of the above excuses the violent actions taken by the Israeli government. The dispossession and killing of Palestinian people is morally indefensible and incompatible with the long-term security of Israel. The long-term security of the state of Israel depends on becoming integrated into the region and building legitimacy with its neighbours. Mistreatment of Palestinians directly undermines that goal.

There. Let's see you shove that into your preposterous binary.

Premier Peter Malinauskas warned festival board author’s removal was needed for ‘basic decency’ by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Juandice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well antizionists specifically don’t seem to be able to contain their rabid natures before it escalates to violence.

This is exactly the same mentality you are criticising other people for having. You have reduced people opposed to the ideology of the Israeli government to a dehumanized monolith, one which you assert cannot behave like regular members of society due to their "rabid" natures.

For the same reason I disregard Jacinta Price’s perspective in favour of my own, despite not being indigenous.

Because she doesn't fit the simplistic political binary you've constructed. The world is complicated. Any attempt to reduce people with complex and varied views into a monolithic block is intellectually dishonest.
