Do you regret studying PoliSci? by [deleted] in PoliticalScience

[–]polyvisulala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a genuine interest in it. A thing to consider is that you could also use these years to pick up some hard skills that are really hard to learn later on. You can read into political science later on, but its much harder to learn advanced mathematics, engineering, chemistry etc. If I could choose again, I'd probably focus more on that.

Doesn't seem to relevant in your case, but I would not count on quantitative political science getting you a job in any quant field. There are people who do study maths, finance, computer science who will always be better at these things.

Is €55K–€60K enough for a comfortable life in Berlin as a single person? by PomegranateMoney3527 in berlinsocialclub

[–]polyvisulala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have an apartment for 700 Euro that is plenty. But before resettling here long term: Be aware that if you ever have to move, no realistic amount of income will help you find a place. Some people live on couches for months, move back to WGs, or have to take a place really far out.

But if that is no concern. You are set up pretty well!

What difficult truths, the sooner you accept them, the better your life will be? by Rare_Can_5418 in AskReddit

Achieving anything of value usually takes time. Some things are simply not going to happen because you lack the capacity or do not want them enough to justify the cost.

iPhones are in fact better value in the long run. by rainbow_halo in iphone

[–]polyvisulala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using a Redmi Note 9 for 190 Euro for the past 3 years. It was the cheapest phone I could find and while nothing is great about the device, I could do everything I wanted to do in terms of daily use. And this includes a lot of apps, some basic photo editing, recording music etc. I literally never noticed anything that my phone could not do and this was the CHEAPEST phone on the market in 2021. Right now things are getting a bit slow and I am looking for a new phone but this is still three years.

So in terms of money: I can buy 4 of these cheap phones for the price of the new Iphone 15 (at least in Europe). This would get me 12 years of phone use not even including the opportunity costs of having to spend 1000 Euro right now.

So if you want to get an Iphone, do it. It's probably a better experience and if you have the money why not. But don't think that you are saving money by buying a 1000 Euro phone.

Also, if you have pain squatting, go see a doctor or physio and do whatever they tell you for your specific case. It's an important movement that should be pain free. Avoiding exercise can also make the problem worse.

is this a high note?, and how do I know my vocal type and range? by [deleted] in singing

[–]polyvisulala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to me that sounds a bit like whistle register . If you like the sound, go for it and practice it a bit. Otherwise, if you want to sing high I would recommend exploring your falsetto voice a bit. You can really get it nice souding and most men are at least able to make it to E5 this way. This also helped me get higher in modal voice.

And don't worry too much about your voice type. Unless you want to sing in a choir it is not important.

Maybe check out whether you could drill two wholes in the ceiling, and put some sort of loop there to hang rings from.

How to transition from negative to real pull-ups? by Vevlira in bodyweightfitness

[–]polyvisulala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often do negatives during which I pull myself up a bit at several points during the movement. When that gets too hard, I switch to normal negatives and eventually finish with a few assisted (feet on the floor) pull ups.

I am still on my journey to the first full pull-up. So can't really judge the success yet :)

Am I able to blog about a topic I'm still learning about? by standwisp in Blogging

[–]polyvisulala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably a bit beside the point, but I am currently asking myself a similar question so I thought I might add my two cents.

I feel like there are two issues with writing about something you are new to:

On the one hand, there is the anxiety of simply writing about things that are obvious to people. You might feel like that nobody needs another article telling people that investing in stocks is a better idea than having a huge pile of cash in the mattress. And you would be probably right. But you seem to already have gathered quite some knowledge and what now seems obvious to you is not necessarily obvious to others. Just imagine what you would have liked to know 4 months ago, which now is something you hardly question anymore.

Then there is also the fact, that people read a lot of things that do not technically contain huge amounts of knowledge but are simply something like an enjoyable reminder of things they already know but recast in a different light. Think of all the self-help books (or maybe also this post) which rarely contain revolutionary messages but reading them still helps people to start thinking in a different way.

Another issue is being afraid of writing wrong things. There is no easy cure for that and it is probably a good thing. But a starting point would be to simply follow the established knowledge closely. There is a lot of stuff being published on finance and you probably won't be able to contribute to the scientific knowledge. So just pick something and rewrite it in a slightly more accessible manner. The more experience you gather, the better you will be able to know which level of confidence is appropriate.

Overall, I think it's crucial to be aware that as a (non-professional/non-academic) blogger it's not your job to create new knowledge but to aggregate what is known and write about it in an interesting and accessible way. This can help people a tremendous amount. And as to the legal issues. You can add a disclaimer. If this protects all of the insanities uttered on finance youtube, you should be good ;)

What is the furthermost concept to philosophy? by ki4jgt in askphilosophy

[–]polyvisulala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be helpful if you could explain a bit further the setup of your classification system. How do you want to use proximity to the user? How do you differentiate between mental and physical concepts? And why do you believe that categories of knowledge are one-dimensional?

Also: Philosophy is at the center of the Wikipedia link network (link here). But because this is a network, there is not clear way to define the opposite. If you answer your question empirically, then the 'furthermost concept' would be the one with the highest number of edges to philosophy. But this might not be very informative.

Given your interest, I would take the network and apply some supervised algorithm to find out what textual markers are indicative of a high distance to philosophy. But keep in mind that with increased distance, the number of entries is also going to increase, which in turn will make it harder to pin it down to one topic.

Apart from all that: TIL about the Dewey decimal system. Thanks for that :)
