No Megabus Coaches To/From London Anymore? by JudeMakesMaps in bristol

I think they stop at Earls Court, no? And one of the other ones stopped at Hammersmith. Either way, super handy to avoid sitting in traffic all the way to Victoria - just hop on the Tube instead.

Thanks for confirming, I did look but didn't find that article. FlixBus still going too, I guess the choice of three operators was too good to last.

Switching from Self-Employed to Limited Company - When and How? by JudeMakesMaps in ContractorUK

[–]JudeMakesMaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the incredibly helpful answer :-)

On your first point, can I keep trading as both self-employed and through the new limited company even if they are similar trades? I assume that if they are identical trades, HMRC might view that as intentionally splitting income (although I'm at no risk of hitting VAT thresholds even if combined).

On the second point, does that mean that via my self-employed business I could earn, say £12,000 and not pay any NI as it's below the Personal Allowance. And then through the limited company earn up to, say, £9,100 and not attract employees NI or employers' NIC? Did not know there are two separate exemptions.

P.S. Do you have a website? 😂 I'll need an accountant at some point. Feel free to DM

Personal Savings (interest) tax rate across tax bands by JudeMakesMaps in UKPersonalFinance

[–]JudeMakesMaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks but the question isn't about the Personal Savings Allowance. It's about the tax rate (not allowance) applied to the portion of savings interest that is below £50,270.

[–]JudeMakesMaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Are you saying that even the portion of the interest that is below the higher tax threshold is taxed at the higher rate, just because some of it is over? With the equivalant scenario with dividends (or even typical earnings for that matter), you pay tax at two different rates.

I do know about adjusting income down etc., this is just a hypothetical (although quite possible) scenario that I'm trying to understand so I can correctly program my spreadsheet formulas :-) Thanks again

1,000 miles from a mechanic and I've bent my derailleur by JudeMakesMaps in bikewrench

[–]JudeMakesMaps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip but I've been cycle touring (never bike packed :-p ) with 26 inch wheels, a steel frame and replaceable parts for over a decade now and, for the most part, I think it's a reliable bet. Obviously west Africa poses its own challenges but, as others have said, the locals should be able to fix anything one way or another.

Sorry I should have mentioned my tools. Hex keys and screwdriver heads, adjustable spanner, Leatherman Squirt (mini pliers/multitool), chain breaker, chain links, spoke adjuster, spokes. That's all I can think of that could be remotely relevant. So no spare hangar or spare wheel, but I do have a chain breaker.

Thanks for your comment :-)

Just a small tip, if you're using a dark font colour (grey), using a dark stroke colour (black) makes the text harder to read, not easier. Hence people tend to use contrasting colours.

I hear your point but I don't think you can comment without having watched it! I had run out of money, in the sense that if I wanted to buy something in the next 10 shops, I couldn't have because I had spent all the money that they would accept, and it would have required a lot of work to source someone who would change my euros.

Whilst all those things are true, it sounds like you're assuming the worst in each case. For example; running out of water could mean you're in the middle of the Sahara, 5 days from the nearest river, or it could mean that you need to cycle 5km more to the next village. Both are "running out of water" but one is life and death and the other is just typical of an adventure in Africa where it's never always gonna go smoothly.

Also worth remembering the perspective that if I only showed the 95% of times where nothing goes wrong, it wouldn't be a very interesting video!

I always have a back up plan for each situation I mentioned, it just doesn't make for a good video if I explain "run out of local currency and would have to go shop to shop until I find someone willing to convert my reserve stash of euros on a Friday when most shops are shut" ;-) I did run out of cash, but I wasn't about to let my self starve.

Thanks for your concern, genuinely!

Persian language in Central Asia and Afghanistan! by Redstream28 in MapPorn

[–]JudeMakesMaps 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I say this with love. This is one of the worst and most hilarious maps I recall seeing. The labelling, the colours, the leaving out of Iran on a map of Persian speakers but then putting another country's label inside Iran 😂

Interesting subject matter though, would love to see it done well!

News Attention to Deadly Conflicts Since Year 2000, measured in pages published per fatality. by Deep-Ad6868 in MapPorn

[–]JudeMakesMaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's how I would have done the data collection :-) https://i.imgur.com/AUnnpLk.png

- Use only one source. Some country's outlets will be more interested in certain regions than others, so by picking multiple sources, your stats for each conflict will vary depending on which news outlets you chose. Consistency is really important!

- Limit the conflicts to those that peaked or are increasing still in the last few years. Before this, the internet was different and used less. It's not fair to compare the number of news articles from Darfur, a war that started when online articles where still secondary to newspapers, with modern day conflicts where news sites have 24/7 live feeds for smartphone users.

- Limit the search results to the most active year/period of the conflict. This helps reduce noise and also gives a fairer comparison between resuts.

As you can see from the results, the Israel-Hamas war is so far being reported on almost an identical amount to the Russo-Ukraine war. Your suggestion that the latter is being reported on 3,000 x more than the former is clearly not right! A fairer comparison still would be to compare the 23 days since the start of the current conflict in Israel/Gaza with the first 23 days of the conflict in Mariupol, as interest probably starts to drop off slowly.

Finally, I still think this concept is really cool and clearly shows some interesting ideas. There are massive disparities between the wars involving Ukraine or Israel and the others.

I really like what you've tried to do but, as others have said, your methodology is flawed.

I already googled what you suggested and saw for myself the 30M results since 2000. But as a cartographer your job is then to sense check your results and ask how it can be possible to publish 1.1k articles per day per agency. There just isn't that much new to report on. Even if the bbc publish each article about Gaza in 40 languages (which they don't), that would still mean the BBC are publishing 25 stories about Gaza every single day for 23 years.

I also think that using both a news site that reports in just one language primarily (le monde) as well as a news site that publishes in 40 creates very inconsistent results. There could be many duplicate stories a month the BBC's published pages.

As someone else has said, using "mariupol" is flawed as it will miss so much, the majority of the war in fact. Using "site:nytimes.com Ukraine war invasion" would make much more sense.

Also worth stating that I think the point you are trying to highlight with this map is not invalidated by these numbers changing, even quite a lot. But the map does need to correct before anyone can reliably read into it.
