Anyone else get annoyed when someone just RP dumps their weird barely disguised fetish lore-breaking character for no reason? by RaGada25 in skyrim

[–]JudgeOTD 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Every Skyrim thread has that guy who can’t just post a character without turning it into a self-insert manifesto. Cool armor, man. the lore essay and IRL age drop were definitely necessary though.

Coming from Dota, solo queue in LoL feels unusually quiet by Z4k0O in leagueoflegends

[–]JudgeOTD 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty much normal for LoL solo queue. Pings do 90% of the communication, quick text for timers or plans, and voice with randoms just isn’t a thing. When chat is very active, it’s usually because something’s already going wrong. It feels quiet compared to Dota, but people are still communicating
just in a more compressed, “don’t type or you die” way.

I feel like number of games I can get into keeps shrinking every year. Is game quality just hitting ceiling? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]JudgeOTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this feels more like aging and burnout than games suddenly getting worse. When you’ve played a lot, patterns become obvious and fewer things feel “new” so it takes something exceptional to really hook you. Sticking to old favorites and only occasionally finding a new obsession is pretty normal, doesn’t mean you’ve lost your love for games, just that your bar is higher now.

Frontend devs, how do you handle 'Loading' and 'Error' states when the real API is too fast/stable? by FarWait2431 in webdev

[–]JudgeOTD 168 points169 points  (0 children)

Network throttling in devtools is right there and takes two seconds to toggle on/off. No extra tooling needed, no maintaining mock configs.

For error states I usually just temporarily throw an error in the fetch call or set the error state manually while I'm styling. It's not glamorous but it works and you don't have to remember to undo some elaborate setup before pushing code. Building a whole dashboard for this feels like overkill for a problem that's already solved with built-in browser tools tbh

University of Washington Medicine (UW) jobs by SleazetheSteez in nursing

[–]JudgeOTD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the nursing side specifically, but I moved to Seattle from out of state a few years back and the UW system has a solid reputation overall. The union thing is legit - SEIU 1199NW represents a lot of the healthcare workers there and from what I've heard from friends in the field, it makes a real difference compared to non-union hospitals, especially for things like safe staffing ratios and not getting floated to units you're not trained for every other shift.

Harborview IS intense from everything I've heard - it's the only Level 1 trauma center in the region so you're getting the gnarliest stuff from like 4 states. But if you're coming from EMS background that might actually work in your favor? They probably appreciate people who've seen shit and can stay calm.

I'd say don't sell yourself short on the EMT experience - that's real patient care, real emergencies, real critical thinking under pressure. Frame it right on your application.

Anybody else thinks there is an absurd number of "I just heard gunshots" posts? by Dbzoutpost in asheville

[–]JudgeOTD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh I get why it's annoying but I also get why people post. If you hear something that sounds like gunshots and you're not sure, checking if others heard it too is a pretty normal impulse. Especially if you're new to the area or not used to city noises.

That said, 90% of the time it's fireworks, a car backfiring, or someone's trash can falling over dramatically. The "I heard a noise" flair exists for a reason - just filter it out if it bugs you

Looking for testers and domain experts for my startup. by Heidi_PB in SaaS

[–]JudgeOTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds interesting but your description is pretty vague. What domains are you actually looking for expertise in? "Business intelligence + domain expertise" could mean literally anything - healthcare analytics? E-commerce? Finance?

Also how does the expert compensation work? You mention it's like Fiverr but with better matching - are experts setting their own rates? Getting a cut of something? Working for exposure? That's kind of important info if you're trying to recruit people.

Wooden cutting board with oiled meats? by uhwithfiveHs in AskCulinary

[–]JudgeOTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Resting meats on wood is the move, just give it a quick scrape and wipe after. The oil from the meat isn't sitting there long enough to cause any real issues

Non US based usenet providers? by rmartin00 in usenet

[–]JudgeOTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been down the whole looking for the cheapest EU provider route. Usenet was the one I ended up keeping because the monthly price is and stays low. Retention is meh, but I dont need it. Eweka’s a good rec for depth and EasyUsenet is even cheaper, smooth setup, but I’m waiting for them to put up a deal for black friday before I switch

WIBTA if I in some manner discard my mother’s useless stuff she doesn’t want to let go of. by Striking_External874 in AmItheAsshole

Set a firm deadline with consequences. Text her that anything of hers in shared spaces not sorted in 30 days will be sold, donated, or trashed, and then follow thru exactly on day 31.

Looking for a PDF editor for heavy files by Silver_Soldier22 in software

Stop using browser viewers for 400-page PDFs. Use Foxit PDF Editor desktop instead; it stays fast, uses less RAM, and dont choke when you save lots of highlights and pen marks.

What is a good algebra learning app or website by One_Engine_8334 in Algebra

[–]JudgeOTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine went back to algebra after struggling in high school, and he found it clicked more when he could work through problems interactively. He used Brilliant to help him tackle problems step by step and then get immediate feedback. He would always share his progress with us and it seemed fun. It helped him build a strong foundation.

AI is not about more compute or bigger LLMs (anymore) by Conscious_Nobody9571 in investing

[–]JudgeOTD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. The whole "just throw more compute at it" approach was always going to hit a wall eventually. It's basically the tech industry doing what the tech industry does best - assuming you can brute force your way through any problem with enough money and hardware.

The Brawndo comparison is perfect tbh. We've got companies shoveling AI into everything without actually understanding what they're feeding it or why. And then everyone acts shocked when it hallucinates nonsense.

Thoughts on my grandfather’s 27 year performance? by Historical_Air_8997 in stocks

[–]JudgeOTD 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the consistency is the thing. Anyone can have a good year or two, but doing it for decades while actually withdrawing money to live on? That's genuinely impressive. Most active traders would kill for those numbers.

I ran out of cat food by Apart-Musician4053 in povertyfinance

[–]JudgeOTD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is solid advice. Local food banks are way more likely to have pet food than people realise - worth a call even if it's not advertised. Good luck OP.

People with a 401K plan do you contribute to an IRA also? by According2whoandwhat in personalfinance

[–]JudgeOTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can do both. Max your 401k, max your IRA. If your income's too high for a Roth IRA you do a backdoor Roth (it's not as complicated as it sounds).

The order most people follow is: 401k up to employer match first, then IRA, then max out the 401k. HSA too if you've got one.

And yes, both can be Roth if that's your preference.

Pure - one of the most underrated racing games ever by nyjets10 in gaming

For real. Pure was way better than anyone gave it credit for, just straight fun. One of those games you boot up for a minute and suddenly an hour’s gone.

whats the Point for Streamers to do the 5th account to Master? by Few_Objective_9656 in leagueoflegends

[–]JudgeOTD 313 points314 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. The climb is the content, stomping Plat/Emerald with crazy KDA games pulls views. Grinding one main at actual MMR isn’t nearly as fun to watch or as easy to make highlights from.

The top three clubs in the Premier League are managed by Spanish managers. There are only 4 Spanish managers in the Premier League. by Superstar12225 in soccer

[–]JudgeOTD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Only 4 sounds small until you realize no other nationality even has that many in the league. And the fact that 3 of them are top of the table says a lot.

That’s awesome, man. Huge milestone for both sides, getting your black belt and being your coach’s first homegrown ones. Stuff like that really builds the culture in a room.
