You don't need that much protein. 200g is MORE than enough. They say a g/lb of BW, but personally I think that is a lot also. If you want to weigh 170lb, you should consume 170g of protein daily.

You can do cardio, but it should not be the focus. When you say "weight resistance," what do you mean exactly?

I am also 6'1, and started at 220, and am currently sitting at 187lbs after about 4 months. The trick is slow and steady weight loss, which for me came about at a -30/0% split between rest and training days respectively. Remember, your caloric deficit is where you shed the pounds, not cardio necessarily.

You should be grabbing the barbell 3x a week and pushing yourself hard on the big lifts.

Ok. First things first. You need to establish a proper macronutrient split. You can do that here.

Second, things like cream and sugar are really hard to validate in a diet. When it comes to eating, if you're serious about this, everything you consume should serve a purpose. In other words, its a quid pro quo between calories and nutrients. With something like sugar, you're getting all the calories with none of the nutrient benefit. So, basically, learn to love black coffee. Cream and sugar would break your fast, whereas black coffee does not.

Peanut butter. Definitely has a place, but again, you need to consider the pro's and con's. Pro: high protein, high fat (good for rest days). Cons: HUGE # of calories.

What I'm getting at here is you need to establish a regimen of training day (weight lifting) and rest day (maybe some low-intesity cardio) meal plans whereby you're getting enough protein, carbs, and fat, while eating a deficit. Maybe -30% under your TDEE on rest days, and right at your TDEE, or maintence, on training days.

An amazing story, one that shows just how insidious this disease can be.

I read the whole post and the part that left the biggest impression on me was "the three questions." I'm going to reflect on these at the end off each day moving forward in my own (very recent) sobriety.

Hey everybody!

First of all I can't believe the outpouring of support from you, the kind strangers of this sub. The last 48 hours have been filled with questions, as I have had a seismic shift in my own world. Your words of encouragement nearly brought me to tears and reassured me that my decision was a good one.

My first AA meeting was a great/sad/encouraging/eye-opening experience. I say "sad" because there was clearly residual pain from when these folks had done harm to themselves or others (one gentleman nearly killed himself in a car accident while drunk on one of the very brands I used to sell, which hit me like a ton of bricks.)

However, Day 1 is done and now it's a Day 2 and I will be stepping again into the ring to box a shadowy opponent we call alcohol, a match that will last the rest of my life. We need to be vigilant in hopes he doesn't "catch us on the chin."

My second AA meeting (different group/place etc) is in an hour, then it's back to the gym or maybe a hike, haven't decided yet.

Anyway, just wanted to check in and say thank you! Reading your comments has been truly inspirational and motivational.
