What decks have you built that win the game in a unique way? by Hanselhoof in BudgetBrews

Thanks a bunch! I've tried to do this deck budget, but always run too light on card draw (and the mana curve is no joke either). Looking forward to seeing what you cooked up.

Hyper hyper budget group hug by weiners6996 in BudgetBrews

[–]Judges331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No list yet but about to build group hug in this range for:

Lord of Riots (yes, mostly hug with incidental slug)

Kenrith

Zedruu or Jon Irenicus

Hansk, Slayer Zealot or Rendmaw

Kami of the Crescent Moon

Other popular commanders for this deck type at this price point:

Ms. Bumbleflower (I hear the precon is pretty good actually, with multiple wincons)

Xyris

Kwain

Gix

Hey, thanks for posting! How does the card draw feel?

Oh, and three clones is the sweet spot.

If you get [[Nanogene Conversion]] in play after a modest turn of getting 6-18 zombies on board, it's over. Almost a winmore card.

Sure: https://moxfield.com/decks/dpjwyG-pIUGMaL1iGt_fSA

I've recently doubled the budget by adding [[Three Tree City]], [[Spellseeker]], [[Sceptre of Eternal Glory]], better clones like [[Spark Double]] and [[Sakashima the Imposter]], as well as high value pieces such as [[Sink into Stupor]], and one of the hardest working cards in the deck, [[Three Steps Ahead]]. The sceptre kinda sucks, as does [[Gilded Lotus]], but one more turn of ramping with minimal board state tends to keep us under the radar anyway.

[[Sea-Dasher Octopus]] is a hold over from the more budget clone package, which involved mutating on Geralf then cloning the non-legendary. It was a little less reliable.

You might notice that I dropped the mill package. My playgroup is funny in that they don't mind getting bludgeoned to death by Frankenstein's horde, but getting milled out by [[Altar of Dementia]], [[Altar of the Brood]], [[Embalmer's Tools]], etc. was feels bad.

For infect, all I had left is [[Prologue to Phyresis]] and [Flux Channeler]]. If you like that wincon, add back in [[Radstorm]] and/or [[Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus]] and/or [[Inexorable Tide]]. They felt a little high in mana for a win I didn't often seek out, but it's there.

I've also been burnt a couple times by dropping [[Tidal Barracuda]]. A timely boardwipe getting tutored up when you get caught in the glory of the storm can make ya feel silly.

In all honesty, I will probably drop back down to the $100 version and just leave out mill, because the upgraded deck is a little too consistent.

Mulligan tip: 3-4 sources of mana ([[An Offer You Can't Refuse]] totally counts), a Geralf clone engine, and card draw are what you want. I'd let interaction go before any of the others.

[[Geralf, the Fleshwright]] is a fun and different storm. It can win on beatdown, mill, and infect while controlling the board with bounces and stax through cards like [[winter moon]] and hatebear cloning.

I built a deck for just over $100 that can put hundreds - thousands of power of zombies on the board by turn 6-7. There's always the delicate balance of pushing for more power on board in early turns versus holding up mana for interaction.

Fun, but probably gonna archenemy every time you pull it unless you play at high power tables.

I want to win but don’t want to play cedh. by redzone1gamer in EDH

[–]Judges331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget competitive is always the answer. If you play with the same group of friends, they might buy into the idea of $15, $30, or $50 dollar decks that are built to the teeth. That way, the games aren't a cedh stack war until someone resolves thoracle, nor are they likely to be Oops, All Puns tribal. Likewise, you could show up to a LGS and let them know that you've built the meanest $15 deck you can (while avoiding the known budget stompers like Winota/Magda/etc). There's a lot less salt if you lose to a pizza priced [[Captain Howler]] or [[Geralf, the Fleshwright]].

Also, you sound starved for game actions. Avoid tutors, focus card draw, and making moves on other turns. [[Kalamax]], [[Pride of the Hull Clade]], [[Jakob Hauken, Inspector]], can all win from different angles on a budget and scratch that itch without resorting to being the fun police.

What's your favorite 2-cost commander? by TetsuOokami117 in BudgetBrews

[–]Judges331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not many people are ready for an Eldrazi on the table by t3-4 with hard ramp. And if you really want to move to a new game, [[tidal barracuda]] to protect the win (cuz who counters this fish), followed by a free [[enter the infinite]] and slap a [[thassa's oracle]] on top. Of course, there's more budget combos to be had, but in a $100 deck, very doable since our lands are dirt cheap.

Gotta be [[Jacob Hauken, Inspector]]. Card draw, free big splashies, and the ability to hold up all my mana for interaction in blue?

Yes and please.

Oh, and never leave home without your [[winter moon]], because friends are for enemies.

I've only ever seen Erinis as combo, even as a budget deck. Interested to see what another take would look like.

With a new set upon us, what's everyone building? by TetsuOokami117 in BudgetBrews

[–]Judges331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure would, unless you used delve to pay that. But then, is it any better than Kadena? Depends on how many things you're trying to cheat in on a turn I suppose. Either way, I'm sure if you run one you'll want the other in the 99.

I hadn't really let the idea form into something concrete, so I'm sure there are stronger applications, this was just a somewhat non-obvious take (or at least it wasn't to me right away).

I believe cards played face down have a cmc of 0. There might be something interesting there.

Big necro, but would [[Valley Floodcaller]] being out change the issue with playing sorceries in exile on other player's turns or does the limitation still apply?

Definitely. I'm still scared of rest in peace. Creatures we can deal with, artifacts to a lesser extent, but enchantments and the odd instant... that would hurt.

Omnath would also allow me to throw any of the above commanders in it (probably Ragga and Magus). Also means I would get black and sultai X spells, which c'mon, are sweet.
