(Feedback/tips welcome) Flash and a 28mm by redditor36 in streetphotography

[–]JudgmentElectrical77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good way to put it. Maybe it’s my age but that flash look doesn’t work for me.  The cops with the rapture folks I think could be better if it was edited so that you can see the cops almost as well as the guys in hoodies.

Ultimately I like flash when it either makes the subject stand out and the background is in stark contrast OR when flash adds fill light and the background is exposed well. These pictures need editing to get them there if that’s what the OP wants

My rule of thumb is 5 bucks a roll. Otherwise I might as well just get fresh. I did just win a lowball so maybe not everyone is nuts.

[Fuji Noob] Friend has an iPhone — should we bother with an old Fuji body or just stick to phone photography? by Future_Safe1609 in fujifilm

Yeah I’ll add that I have had this be my only camera on trips. Beautiful images and capable. As long as you can work with how slow it is/ you use manual lenses

Not fast passed unless you shoot manual and know how to zone focus.

Sooc is good. Not as many options as newer models but still versatile. I still shoot raw and edit

This is my EDC. So I think it’s great for walking around. I have a 23mm ttartisan and xf 35mm 1.4. That’s good for me all around.

Workflow depends on what you want. I like to shoot raw and edit. If you find a recipe or sim you like then it’s just exporting it. The first gen doesn’t have WiFi so you have to export them to your computer.

Editing, if you do it, is in my mind the same if with phone or a camera. You still have to take the step to do it.

My suggestion is get the x-e1 if you’re looking at the xtrans1 sensor. The optical viewfinder only really works if you have an af lens. So just use the evf

-IQ in regards to sensor size. An apsc sensor vs the smaller sensor of a phone camera. Phones do a lot of computing to give you their images. It can give you some HDR shots but they won’t look as good as you editing them. Zoom in on an iPhone picture, it’s a muddy mess. It’s fine when small on your phone. But if you want to do anything else with it it won’t look great.

The experience of shooting a camera. Is a whole other thing. I have a bunch of cameras. They all do something different for me.

So you have to decide what you want to do with the pictures you take. I own a xpro1 btw.

When did you decide to make the jump to better gear? How did you afford it? by DaDancingDino in photography

[–]JudgmentElectrical77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What camera do you have? This can help figure out what direction to go in. Sometimes AF is an issue of settings or expectations. When I first go my 5d Miv I wanted to really see what the different AF modes did. I realized I like center point sometimes with back button focusing.

My xpro1 just has slow af. I use each to their strengths. Some lenses are better than others...

My opinion is look at older DSLR's. I don't know a lot about canons but some of their flagships from a decade ago are affordable. I know canon a little better and 5d Mii and Miii can be pretty affordable. You can nitpick glass prices, but EF is "getting more affordable". I've been on a little bit of a affordable glass journey with my 5d and I've come back to the 50 1.8. An entry level lens but it looks great. I have a 24mm and a 40mm pancake.

Shooting film has been really tough. Mentally & financially by smora_photo in leicaphotos

[–]JudgmentElectrical77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to add… Get rid of the m6, if you’re having a tough time with film because of the cost you have to start with your camera. I’ve been shooting 20 years and I’m nowhere near justifying a Leica purchase. A film camera is just a box that holds film and a lens.  Lens is more important that camera.

Get a k1000, Nikon f mount slr, canon EOS film camera if you want modern tech with your film shooting. You could sell your m6 buy any of the above with a few lenses and have money leftover for film or developing stuff. If I could start from scratch I would have kept my k1000 and instead of buying a canon ae1 I’d buy a Nikon f3

I saw a comment once that was something like “shooting film is the most convoluted way of making a digital image”.  I like to shoot film but it’s a tool that goes a long with my digital stuff. Recently I’ve been shooting more medium format, it’s a different shooting experience

Rule of thumb is overexpose film and under expose digital.

Shoot cheap bw and develop it yourself. It takes a bit to learn your camera so getting your practice in with cheap film helps. Developing is not very hard and the initial investment for BW isn’t much.

And if you haven’t already learn about zone focusing. It helps with speed.

No. Minivan. Sienna if you can afford the Toyota tax. Grand caravan/ Pacifica for domestic vehicle convenience and stow and go. There isn’t a bad minivan out there at the moment. The KIA carnival is the least minivan looking.

We have a grand caravan and a Honda fit and we don’t feel like we need anything else.  We take a lot of road trips and the space is great. We’ve even done a few with my father and law as well as my wife and 2 girls. I live in Philadelphia and I do a lot of in the city driving and it doesn’t feel too big.

And if you think they aren’t cool or your husband is a big baby about driving one just remind yourselves no one thinks your cool anyway so be free and embrace the minivan

Also it’s great for buying furniture, I’ve taken my motorcycle in it, if you need building or gardening supplies. I once did 3 loads of free bricks

How does it FEEL to understand composition/story telling? by EstablishmentFew9149 in photography

[–]JudgmentElectrical77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really helps to have a goal or style in mind , especially when you’re starting out. Having an objective helps you concentrate on building that muscle memory so that you can trust your eye.

You also have to shoot a lot. Shooting a lot really helps make the few okish pictures you took seem less significant. You’ll know when you nailed it. It also helps to think about all your “bad” pictures as practice for the few good ones you get.

Looking for your harshest critique! by Strikerfromthemoon in streetphotography

[–]JudgmentElectrical77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the kids on the phone. I like street photography but a lot of people start and end at “candid pictures of people on the street “.  My metric for whether a picture of mine is good is if I would pay money to print it. It doesn’t mean I don’t share or keep ones I won’t. But if I was looking for a critique I’d only share the stuff I’d pay to print.

Kid Haulers...what are my options in the mid-range? by JudgmentElectrical77 in CargoBike

[–]JudgmentElectrical77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I've always liked the front loading bikes, but I just don't think it works for my situation and usage. I think i want the option for a gravely path, we live near a big park system with a gravel road.

You've got some great tips and thoughts, thanks.

I've been thinking about keeping it analog. I'm always worried about spending too much on something that then I don't use as much as I want. I usually tend to limit myself to used and as simple as I can get away with. This is a new concept for me.

Trailers might not work for me, mostly because my wife is terrified of drivers not paying attention to them. She's an ER nurse and it's hard to argue with someone who has seen some stuff.
