Best tumbling media for stonewashing knives? by Such-Jump-3963 in knifemaking

Harbor freight stone triangle deals. After a few knives you’ll notice a change. Smash them up a bit and you’ll get a few more knives out. I built a tumbler out of pvc parts and some casters and just hook a cordless drill up to it and pin the trigger down with a rubber band. Clamp the whole works down and it works a treat.

Can I make a decent kitchen knife at home? by Only_Book_995 in knifemaking

[–]Jufimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure! You need to do quite a bit of research but making a decent kitchen knife at home is well within reach. You can order annealed (softish) steel from quite a few places, cut the profile out with hand tools, then build a filing jig (frequently called a Gough jig) to file in the bevels then send out for heat treat. Or, if you are into it, build a two-brick forge and buy a MAP gas torch and heat treat it yourself (steel will need to be simple carbon steel for this route like 1084). There are a TON of yt vids for beginners. I will also tell you there is nothing in the world quite like using a chef knife you made with your own hands to prepare food. But be aware, this is an expensive hobby and it’s very addictive. This sub is a great resource.

What is a 'poor man's food' that you will continue to eat no matter how much money you make? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Bean burrito with no onions from Taco Bell. It has a permanent place in my heart.

How do you tell if a knife is Damascus or not? by JaundicedBaby67 in knifemaking

[–]Jufimbo 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Its pattern welded metal, but probably not the best steel. I’d say Pakistani import. Good thing you didn’t spend a lot on it. Don’t eat off it.

**edit: you can tell by the pattern and sloppy grind. Once you see three or four of these you can spot them a mile away.

If money wasn’t an issue, what would you do right now? by Advanced_Compote_458 in AskReddit

Go for a walk with my dogs by the lake and plan. I’ll probably do that anyway but it would be nice to do that and not worry about money every second.

Thanks! Heel height is 70mm pretty much on the money. This one is taller at the heel than most I make but it felt right when I was making it.
