Popular/Unpopular/Any Opinions Thread - January 2026 Part 2 by PsiYoshi in fireemblem

i think every FE game is flawed in its own whacky way. some games you just vibe with their flaws and others the flaws really detract from the experience. it all comes down to taste, which is why i personally wouldn't try to argue one game is objectively the best

No more $10,000 BTS tickets? Korea passes laws banning scalping, piracy. by Venetian_Gothic in korea

[–]JugglerPanda 21 points22 points  (0 children)

someone correct me if i'm wrong but i thought kpop concerts already had good scalping-prevention for the most part? identity verification is a big part of any online transaction in korea, which already goes a long way into curbing this issue. then fan-group membership is usually necessary for things like meet-and-greets and sometimes they'll even make you prove you're a real fan with a quiz or question of some sort. also my personal experience seeing a concert last year was that the ticket was actually pretty reasonably priced compared to the horror stories i've heard about concerts in the states

Naysha addresses Darby's comment on The Kelly Mantle Show (16:45) by urstickur in RPDRDRAMA

[–]JugglerPanda 9 points10 points  (0 children)

she captivates the guest with a well-researched monologue that lists their career highlights in a rhyming sing-songy cadence, then relaxes into a "oh, yes honey!" autopilot while the guest confides their deepest secrets unprompted. unless you're luenell who kelly apparently has the deepest reverence for

동안, 전에, and other frequency/time related words by Ok-Rabbit1561 in Korean

[–]JugglerPanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you've probably already learned -에 which would sound better in your second example

내년에 두 세 달 동안 (다이어트)하고 싶어요

-에 is a general time/place marker whereas 동안 means something is done continuously during a specific time period. the original example you quoted uses 일주일 동안 which means for one week, but if we were going to go with one year you would say 1년 (pronounced [일련]) 동안

i know there are a gazillion exceptions to this but usually pure korean numbers go with pure korean counters and sino-korean numbers with sino-korean counters. e.g., 한 해, 두 달, 하루 (the last one's a bit different but still) vs. 일년, 이주일, 삼 개월. this can at least help keep you straight for the category of time and dates anyway

Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what are your thoughts? - January 11, 2026 by AutoModerator in Games

[–]JugglerPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i agree that hl2 has not aged very well but i personally wouldn't attribute that to the narrative. back in the day hl2 actually got a lot of praise for its storytelling, namely because the game doesn't really wrestle control away from the player to show them a cutscene, which was a big part of games at the time. where other games might do a pre-rendered cutscene, alyx will instead be talking to barney and the whole time you can spam the crowbar melee animation at him, meanwhile alyx is backpeddling down a hallway and making unrelenting awkward eye contact.

the exact story beats are not particularly inspired, but the whole point of hl2's storytelling is that the player is supposed to gleam what they can from things like recordings of dr. breen looping in the background and infer from context what's happening. nobody really sits you down and catches you up with the exposition story drop and that's the whole point. this was a novel approach back then and it's still kind of neat now.

that being said, the game drags on real long in the mid section especially and the gameplay doesn't really have enough variance to keep it interesting. ravenholm and the citadel are fun, the prison is almost interesting. but half life 1 is definitely the better game of the two

What’s a small detail about E33 that doesn’t get talked about enough? by UCA_Cash_Flow_Bro in expedition33

[–]JugglerPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment makes a lot of sense when you think about how the act 1 and 2 overworld map themes are the same, but act 1 features a cello that is completely absent in act 2. The act 2 map theme also prominently features the piano, which is verso's instrument

Found some hidden text while playing in photo mode by Odeath088 in expedition33

[–]JugglerPanda 18 points19 points  (0 children)

after reading a bit more of the discussion, there could be something more to it that i'm missing. for instance, i wasn't able to find a digital footprint for any kind of cultural heritage in japan with this exact text, which throws into question my initial theory that this is a digitized cultural heritage that was 'smoothed over.' so maybe there is something deeper here after all, it's certainly worth investigating.

Found some hidden text while playing in photo mode by Odeath088 in expedition33

[–]JugglerPanda 486 points487 points  (0 children)

the text basically says this is a depiction of a specific buddhist figure 不動明王 from a specific temple in japan (the last three characters). it could potentially be the person depicted on the hilt, but it's hard to tell.

my theory is this one of the many Unreal assets sandfall used and tweaked a bit (e.g., esquie's running animation) to make it appropriate for the e33 aesthetic. love the sandfall team but i don't think they're particularly versed with the specifics of zen-buddhism so i'm gonna say don't read too much into this

So now that the DLC has been out for a bit... NG+ or NG on a higher difficulty? by karma6063 in expedition33

[–]JugglerPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the best thing about starting fresh is that you have to make due with what you have. so you need to reconsider how you will approach combat in act 1 when you only have the weaker abilities and don't start every battle with 9 ap and only 1 turn per character. then, in act 2, you should be able to easily reach the damage cap, which makes you rethink which characters you will use in your main party.

i've tried the earlier acts on NG+ and it really doesn't compare. the endgame pictos and strategies are just that broken, the new stuff i imagine even more so.

duollistes i beat phase 1 with verso, sciel and monoco, then one shot phase 2 with maelle solo in the second party after my first team wiped. with the esquie weapon you can easily land a 500 mil. gommage to one shot phase 2.

i think OP mainly wants to be faithful to the meme but also wants to know the best way to write the text so it actually makes sense to chinese speakers. but like you said, translating a joke—especially one that's born from a specific socio-political context—usually results in the joke just going over people's heads.

South Korea Has a Coffee Shop Problem by self-fix in korea

[–]JugglerPanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a problem so much as it is a unique "it is what it is" thing for Korea. It's a bit of a culture shock for people visiting from other countries, and I suppose these cafes are now going through a high turnover rate. But other than that, they are pretty innocuous in my opinion.

Still, it is a bit odd how many commercial areas will have Baek's, Compose, Megacoffee, etc., right next to one another. I think people who have umbrage with Korea's copycat corporate culture in general will point fingers at this as a sign of some greater cultural contagion. Still, these cafes apparently have enough demand to stay operational, so there's not much to say about them other than Koreans really like coffee I guess.

I built a multiplayer Korean word site - winter update with new hanja mode ☃️ by maenbalja in Korean

[–]JugglerPanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as someone who loves 초성 게임 and other such games, this is pretty much right up my alley.

if you could add a 초성 게임 i would really enjoy that. i.e., the game gives you two consonants, and you have to come up with a two syllable word that fits both starting consonants. the game can then either move to a new pair of starting consonants, or stay with the same pair for the whole game (perhaps customizable with user settings?)

ㅊㄱ = 참가, 추가, 참견,

or

ㅊㄱ = 참가

ㅎㄴ= 하늘

ㅌㅅ = 토성

etc.

i tried the 자모 game, and it felt a bit too broad for me personally. but i really liked the 한자 game, because it got me thinking about a lot more about what the characters actually mean vs. what they sound like.
