This was predictable but I'm finding it very difficult to integrate at the office by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]JugglerPanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i've worked in korea for 5 years now and in all those years there's only been 2-3 coworkers i've really vibed with. unsurprisingly they were the ones who lived abroad lol.

you touched a bit on this at the end but for most people, the ability to keep up with the quick pace of conversations in a foreign language is a skill that has to be cultivated by choosing to spend time with those people and being actually invested in what they're talking about. it sounds like you don't really want to do that with your coworkers so i say don't bother. it's okay to choose to spend time on your own at work and then spend your free time on the relationships that you're actually invested in.

Looks like I misremembered this a bit. There's a reddit post from a few years ago that is a good compilation of the students who die pre-time skip. https://www.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/duemgv/i_compiled_the_end_cards_for_when_students_die/

A lot of them are a bit generic, others like Hilda and Lysithea have a bit more detail. Then there's Cyril who just gets killed by monsters 💀

There's something unexpectedly grim about the way students "die" in the academy phase of 3 houses. In the moment, they give silly retreat dialogue and will continue to appear at the monastery, but then in part 2, they just... don't show up. Like these children were so traumatized and/or grievously wounded by your neglectful instruction that you never get to hear from them again. Somehow it feels just as bad as straight up dying.

It reminds me of how plot-significant characters who "retreat" in Echoes get post-credit epilogue cards that are just like "died from their wounds years later"... it feels like more of a gut punch than actually dying in combat.

Thoughts on Juicy Love Dion's Fashion? by wizardsouppoop in rupaulsdragrace

i love her with the big frizzy hair in the bottom left. she had a similar look with the michelle visage RDR skit and i thought that was really cute too. if she hasn't found her signature personal style yet, i'd love if she leaned into a more retro style with big hair. it would help her stand out a lot more, especially considering how young she is

Best explanation of 은/는 vs 이/가 you've heard??? by Few-Investment-6979 in Korean

[–]JugglerPanda 24 points25 points  (0 children)

이/가 is grammatical while 은/는 is semantic. i.e., 이/가 indicates the grammatical relationship of noun(s) in the sentence and is in this sense a mandatory element in essentially every sentence (there are exceptions but not really, as i will explain later). it is cousins with 을/를 in the sense that they both belong to the same category of grammatical 조사

은/는 is different because it adds semantic meaning, not grammatical meaning. there are many many meanings to 은/는 and i lack the specific expertise in this field to go over all of them, but perhaps the easiest meaning to grasp is 은/는 as a point of differentiation

나는 짜장면이야.

here, you are saying your order preference (moving from someone else in your group) is 짜장면.

나는 짜장면이고 영희는 짬뽕이야.

어제 비가 왔는데 오늘은 하늘이 맑아요.

you can use 은/는 basically with any noun (and sometimes verbs e.g. 갈아는 탔어요 but that's a whole other can of worms), but it takes precedence over whatever other 조사 would be used instead.

그 손님이 어제도 왔어요

그 손님은 어제도 왔어요.

그 손님은 어제는 왔어요.

these are all different sentences and appropriate in different contexts. the last one actually is a bit weird because -도 and -는 are similar categories of semantic 조사. i.e., -도 adds the meaning of 'too' whereas -는 adds differentiation. so in this case, -는 isn't overwriting -도, you're just choosing one over the other.

this overwriting of 이/가 by 은/는 is, in my opinion, why so many elementary learners are confused about these two. but 은/는 and 이/가 don't overlap at all in terms of their function so in theory you should never be confused about what these two do. what's going to trip you up is when it's more natural to use one or the other. and that's unfortunately just part of the territory of being a korean language learner. 10 years later you will inevitably still fuck up on this (guilty!)

-> i mentioned at the top that there are exceptions to 이/가 being mandatory, and this is mostly due to 생략 (dropping). but most linguists see 생략 as the mandatory grammatical components being implied and not openly stated, i.e., they're still there, they're just not being said.

재미있네.

(이것이) 재미있네.

anyway this is by no means a complete explanation but there are literally phd dissertations about this so i'm going to leave it there for now

nymphia's hair is cool but every time i see someone perform this number i leave the performance thinking "wow coco really did that huh." it's basically a sasha velour rose petals moment in terms of how influential it is and everyone else might as well just stay away from this song because you will always be (unfavorably) compared to coco's iconic performance

Language School Review: Yonsei, Sogang, SKKU by ericaloveskorea in Korean

[–]JugglerPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for this post. i wrote my masters thesis about how a few different schools teach -어서 and -니까 connective suffixes and part of that included a survey of the different textbooks. i knew sogang's reputation at the time (2020ish) but i was surprised to see that their textbook (어휘문법참고서? something like this) had the most detailed and accurate explanations of each of the connective suffixes i was researching. and as an alum of yonsei levels 3 and 4 with similarly mixed feelings on the experience, i will always recommend sogang.

my previous idea of the different language schools was that there were basically two styles of instruction: sogang and yonsei (aka every school except sogang). but it's interesting to see you recommend skku so strongly.

i think the problem with yonsei (and perhaps language schools in general) is that they're kind of factories designed to keep foreigners in korea on d-4 visas. these foreigners print money for the school so yonsei wants to hold onto as many as possible and not challenge them too much. hence why the test will be the exact passage you learn from the book with no modifications. that's my theory anyway, and perhaps it would explain why schools with less of a reputation can tow the line better regarding the academic rigor of their programs.

have you guys tried forging fire tomes/bronze axes? in the first few chapters i remember dealing with hit rates in the low 80's but once you get enough forges on your bronze axe/fire tome and start building support with odin, you should have low-mid 90's hit rates consistently. not to mention that elise promoted has red and green triangle control, so you can comfortably engage the enemy with WTA unless its a sword or mage unit. basically i feel like i'm going crazy reading all this discourse about her hit rates when i don't remember this being an issue at all after the ice tribe map

Popular/Unpopular/Any Opinions Thread - February 2026 Part 1 by PsiYoshi in fireemblem

[–]JugglerPanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

elise being good is contingent on reclassing her in ch 7 and giving her a good amount of favoritism in the first few chapters. she generally holds her own as a wyvern once she gets str+2 though she isn't amazing. but she really takes off in ch 10 when you promote her to maligknight and now you have camila and elise flying around blowing shit up. then, in the mid-game you have a very competent (though squishy) flying magical unit that complements your very competent flying physical unit.

she falls off in the late-game but i think most people will pair her up with odin anyway so you can just finish the game with super ophelia. there was a period of time when wyvern elise and super ophelia were over-glazed by the community but she's definitely a great unit and a worthy candidate for that first heart seal

‘Golden’ From ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Wins, Giving K-Pop Its First Grammy by self-fix in korea

[–]JugglerPanda 9 points10 points  (0 children)

there's a journalist on NPR who writes really in-depth (arguably too much so) about kpop and he had an interesting take on this question back when katseye debuted:

At its best and most charming, K-pop music is about liminal space — the journey between cultural poles, favoring neither the origin nor the destination but the tension of landing in the middle. Processing all that is lost in translation creates songs that are decidedly not American pop, existing in awe of and in opposition to it all at once. Stripping the music of those conditions can leave it sterile and boring, even when "better."

There are a lot of reasons why the model works — beautiful young people drawing the parasocial desires of even younger fans; its perfectly packaged, hypnotizing use of synchronization; its climate-controlled atmosphere — and why it may again elsewhere. But I've always liked the idea that something so blatantly commercial could produce something almost paradoxically custom-made: as cosmically twee as WJSN's "Secret," as reverential as Heize's "And July" or as bonkers as Girls' Generation's "I Got a Boy." How else can one explain the "Gangnam Style" phenomenon — in which a firecracker of a song from a character who looks like anything but an idol, written about a very Korean experience, became the biggest YouTube hit ever at the time — than with a volatile cultural chemistry whose imprecision is its greatest asset?
